I was dragged to it kicking and screaming, but ended up having a much better appreciation for both men at the movie's end. I still don't like either one, but it was very good at conveying the genius behind them. I have never felt so conflicted about a movie in my life! Maybe this explains my current guilty pleasure practice of watching every VH1 "Behind the Music" episode I can get my hands on. The more I hate the featured band/artist, the more interesting the show is. Well, with one glaring exception. When they aired REO Speedwagon's story, I thought "Hey, this is going to be great. They SUCKED!", but so did their very lame BTM. Every time they flashed on Kevin Cronin, he was sitting there with an acoustic guitar. His little commentary segments would always end with "...and it went a little somthing like this...". Uggghhh. Oddly, the best episode I can recall seeing was AC/DC. They were truly a bunch of lads who just really enjoyed playing, and seem to be still just regular guys who are smacking themselves in the forehead everytime they get a big paycheck. They were devastated at Bon's death, and were completely wrecked at the thought of having to call his mom to tell her the news. But I digress. I can't recall that I've heard the XTC version (I know, I know, bad Nadyne), but here's the first bit: Dear God, hope you got the letter I pray you can make it better down here I don't mean a big reduction in the price of beer but all the people that you made in your image see them starving on their feet 'cause they don't get enough to eat from God I can't believe in you Complete lyrics at: http://www.davemcnally.com/lyrics/Xtc/DearGod.asp /nm ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Dec 2001 14:10:36 -0800 From: "Kira" Subject: Re: song question >Song is addressed to Dear God. I used to have that on tape... since it has a duet with Kate Bush (Sister and Brother). Don't remember if it has a child singing tho. There are also songs called Dear God by Elton John and by Sarah MacLachlan. It's a two-disc set in a spiffy package, but the only extras are a Peter Jackson bio, the theatrical trailer, and on disc two, a 25 minute documentary on the making of Bad Taste. (Why they couldn't squeeze that onto disc one, I have no idea.) Not a lot of extras, but the documentary, though short, is really quite fascinating, and the film itself is in widescreen and DTS - and considering I first watched the film on a smuggled, fourth-generation VHS copy, this presentation is really a joy. Oh, there's an amusing booklet, as well, with an interview of "The Boys." I've never heard of "Forgotten Silver." Strewth! A gaping hole in my Peter Jackson lore! What's in the Limited Edition? I bought all of my Jackson DVDs from a Canadian dealer on eBay (except for "Forgotten Silver" which is the one Jackson film we haven't seen yet) and it doesn't have any extras at all. Not a talking butt to be found! I don't blame you for skipping the Andy Kaufman film though. I liked it, even though I hated Kaufman when he was around, but the movie made me realize that I just didn't get it. I'm sure it will be a great movie, but as someone who's been a Tolkien fan for over 20 years, I can see already there are a few things that will disappoint me, such as.. Liv Tyler's character Arwen. In the books she appears only briefly, has no lines, and doesn't do much more than sit there looking pretty. From what I've seen about the movie, they've turned her into Middle Earth's answer to Xena. And then there's Tom Bombadil playing the part of 'Sir Not Appearing in This Film' As for Lothlorien, from what I understand they gave it about 5 minutes. Hopefully they haven't strayed from the original story too much more than that, but we'll see. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Dec 2001 20:49:26 -0500 From: Jason Gordon Subject: Clouds - Penny Century I just noticed Andrew's post (as I dig through the ecto-backlog) and realized that I have seen very little mention of Clouds on ecto. I can't even pretend to have forgotten for humorous affect: my hometown has been officially renamed "Middle Earth" this week by the mayor, my workplace has been renamed "Middle Earth Public Library" and all the signs changed, there is a giant (biggest polystyrene structure ever I think) troll on the top of the Embassy Theatre awning, the ink stamp thing that the Post Office stamp on sent letters reads 'Middle Earth', there are large thank you cards in public sites across the region for Wellingtonians to sign thanks to Peter Jackson, and my mom bought front row centre tickets to the film at the Embassy on Christmas Day! Today we went to view some props at the St James - the armor is formidable - dark, heavy, menacing for nasty beasties (plus cruddy for orcs), and elegant for elves. I loved the swords and their engravings. The less delicate weaponry (chopping and thwacking stuff as opposed to slicing stuff) was impressive in a solid black sorta-industrial way. There was a 'miniature' (roof height) black tower which might have been made of styrofoam ... They should have treated it like an art exhibition and listed materials and artists - it was all anonymous. Plus there were displays of some merchandising - ick - except the postage stamps are kinda pretty (http://www.nzstamps.co.nz/cgi-bin/nzstamps/web_store/web_store.cgi?cart_id= &page=lotr.html ) >>I can't wait to see it, though. There is a weird attitude among the city council and local business community that Peter Jackson is doing this to make a financial contribution to the region - yey entrepreneurship - rather than because he wants to make a great movie, in a place he happens to like. They didn't cheer when he filmed Bad Taste and Brain Dead locally, despite those being much more full of local flavour (exploding sheep)! If they bulked up Arwen's part a bit, I can only applaud. I can't wait to see Miranda Otto's Eowyn! That's one of my favorite scenes in the book! Michael C. n.p. Count Your Blessings n.r. It really depends on what they give her to do, I guess, and how much, so that this incidental character doesn't take over the movie or something. Jackson's reason for the romance seems interesting at least, the whole thing of her choosing to be mortal to be with her love and all. That's barely mentioned in the books, comes more from the Silmarillion. Dunno, I kinda go for sentimental stuff like that sometimes. As for Bombadil...I cannot say in the least that I am disappointed in that omission. I never thought that he added much to the book rather than as a pointless sidetrack. I always found the book parts with him rather annoying, actually, in the way that most people were annoyed by Jar Jar Binks. Overall, I'm definitely looking forward to this movie as I haven't done in some time.... John Higdon ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V7 #360 **************************
