People who only like Jim Carrey as a comedy actor will hate it because it's a serious role. People who only like Jim Carrey as a serious actor might dislike it because he really isn't given a whole lot to do (though what he does is good, especially his ability to express conflicting emotions in his facial expressions. The first few minutes are worth an Oscar nomination). People who like Darabont might dislike it because he's not given the great source material that King gave him. Movie fans might dislike it because the ads make it seem to be partially about movies and yet all that is throwaway background. The ads also seem geared to an older, conservative audience, but Conservatives (with a capital C) will almost certainly hate it because it concerns itself too much with liberal, commie, pinko, leftist, un-American crap like...oh, the First Amendment, Freedom of Speech, opposition to the Hollywood Blacklists, etc. Liberals will like all that stuff but will probably cringe at how it's presented (and because the movie is pretty manipulative and dangerously close to being sappy.) So, I don't know. Chris liked it way more than I did and says I should see it again. Come to think of it, he's a Liberal, "only-likes-Carrey-as-a-serious-actor", Darabont & Movie fan, so maybe this film does have an audience. It does have some great moments. For instance, in the "movie-within- the-movie" (Carrey's character wrote and stars in it) take special notice of the icon that the bad guy character (played by Bruce Campbell) is holding and think "Raiders Of The Lost Ark." Also, I'll probably be buying the soundtrack because of the great boogie piano music. Maybe I was in the wrong mood when I saw it, but it just wasn't quite as good as I wanted it to be. Well, oh well, we had an ulterior motive for going to that particular theater anyway. We bought advance tickets to the new Peter Jackson movie that opens on Wednesday! I am so excited! We've been Jackson fans for many years and have seen nearly all of his films. I forget the name of the new one but I hear it's based on a good book. It doesn't matter though, we'd be first in line for anything Jackson directed. I'm sure we'll enjoy it, just because Peter Jackson made it. You're hilarious. :) I have tickets to see _The Fellowship Of The Ring_ next Saturday in Tucson with my sister. I've never bought tickets for a movie further than a couple hours in advance before ... but the 22nd was the earliest showing she could get. Scary. I can't wait to see it, though. I've been following the progress of these films for so long, I just hope it doesn't end up being anticlimactic. Somehow I don't think that'll happen, though. Speaking of Tucson, if anyone knows of anything musically interesting happening there between Christmas and New Year's, let me know. ======================================= Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth "an eye for an eye only ends up making the whole world blind" -- mahatma gandhi ======================================= Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://www.smoe.org/meth/muzak.html ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 16 Dec 2001 14:46:36 -0500 From: Jeffrey Burka Subject: nyc, 12/22 Going to be in NYC this coming weekend and don't yet have plans for saturday night. What's in the Limited Edition? I bought all of my Jackson DVDs from a Canadian dealer on eBay (except for "Forgotten Silver" which is the one Jackson film we haven't seen yet) and it doesn't have any extras at all. I'm willing to buy the movie again if it's worth it, but Amazon doesn't list the extras. >This new movie he's done looks pretty interesting; maybe it's a sequel to >Meet the Feebles? I guess I'll have to wait until he gets finished with all these Ring flicks though. meth, I'm sorry you skipped "The Truman Show" because of Carrey. It's an excellent movie and he's excellent in it. Not a talking butt to be found! I don't blame you for skipping the Andy Kaufman film though. I liked it, even though I hated Kaufman when he was around, but the movie made me realize that I just didn't get it. Still, I certainly don't blame anyone who doesn't like Carrey *or* Kaufman (like Chris) for staying far away. I saw the Mighty Mouse bitlive on SNL and thought it was brilliant, but didn't like much of the rest of what I saw. Slapstick Artaud just isn't my cup of tea. I liked the movie, though, since, for one thing, it confirmed my view of Kaufman as a manipulative arrogant weasel, and also that it was really well done, right from the opening schtick with the credits. The "80s hair band" to which you refer is "Split Enz". They were the precursor to Crowded House. The Finn brothers, Neil and Tim, were indeed in both bands, but Tim was in Crowded House for only a couple of its many illustrious years. Crowded House was not as "in your face" electronically as Split Enz, and tended a lot more to the ballad style. Tim and Neil have gone on to other projects - they travelled the globe as "Finn" and produced a couple of albums..they tended toward folk in this style, and Neil has begun a solo career. His albums are very similar in sound to the Crowded House style, which is not surprising, since he was the driving force behind the band. > Crowded House. A few months ago a Russian coworker told me that "the greatest Russian rock band ever" was playing here, and since he's a King Crimson fan, I was interested. I impulsively agreed to go and had a ticket before I had a chance to listen to the sound clips at mp3.com (). What I heard there didn't impress me much, but I was still interested to see what a Russian rock concert would be like. When I invited my friend Tatiana, she replied, "I am not a big fan of DDT but ALL Russian men love it. You have to see it!" Later she told me that she wasn't sure how much I would get out of it, since the band started in 1981 as a political protest band; the lyrics were key. My friend Nik later told me that this is one of the few Russian protest bands that was able to cross over and win a much broader following. This evening I noticed two things before even getting in the front door: 1) Russian men seem to have a rate of male pattern baldness far lower than the general American population, and 2) black tee was not required--most guys were wearing sweaters. (Seemed like the only black T-shirt folks besides me were with the venue; once I was standing by the door and a woman obligingly showed me her ticket as she went in.) Inside, I noticed that the crowd started whistling impatiently for the band to take the stage at 7:58 (the show was scheduled for 8:00). Other than that, it was a pretty normal crowd. During the course of the show, a DDT banner was waved around at the front of the auditorium, and someone in back was waving a Russian flag (I hadn't realized I didn't know what the Russian flag looked like until tonight)--during the encore he managed to get up on stage and looked absolutely delirious when the lead singer put his arm around him. The Hammerstein Ballroom is a theater-size space with a dance floor space on the floor and seating in the balconies. The floor was wall-to-wall people, often swaying with their hands in the air. The balconies originally held rows of theater seats, but now had two rows of hard straight-backed chairs where every one row of padded theater seats would have been. There was no way to stretch one's legs; I had to go stand in the back several times because my knees hurt. The band itself was a lot better than I expected, even though I understood nothing. The lead singer has a fairly deep Russian voice and looks like a software developer: heavy-set, t-shirt, unkempt hair, short black beard and glasses. Very entertaining, though I had no idea what he was saying. As for the music, I had a lot of trouble comparing it to any American or British bands. The lineup was: lead singer with acoustic guitar, lead electric guitar (and backing vocal), bass, keyboards, and drums. The lead guitar seemed more down in the mix than in most bands; there wasn't so much of that noise that makes you think you could saw logs with it. And there was no touch of Southern-rock influence, which suits me fine. In some ways, it sounded pretty standard, though the closest comparison I could come to was to a French prog rock band I heard in the 80s: Ange. Anyway, I'd go again. ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V7 #359 **************************
