Should be a month or two before she's finished with that, and then there's the fact that her label (I believe that meant Blackbird) has folded and they're looking for a new one. She performed four or five songs that will be on the new album--most of which she's also performed at Barrio in recent weeks. Bjork's _Vespertine_ appeared on most of them. The folk critic's list will probably be of the most interest to some here. It's at http://www.boston.com/dailyglobe2/343/living/Scott_Alarik_s_picks+.shtml. Also, WXPN has its pages up to vote for the top 50 releases of 2001. That's at http://www.xpn.org/cgi-bin/EventHandler/EventHandler.pl?action=entryform&filename=topfifty2001&id=topfifty. By voting, you get entered into a contest to win a copy of each of the CDs that ends up in their top 50. (Please join me in messing up their statistical curve by writing in a bunch of indie releases. :) ======================================= Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth "an eye for an eye only ends up making the whole world blind" -- mahatma gandhi ======================================= Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://www.smoe.org/meth/muzak.html ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 9 Dec 2001 19:53:36 -0500 From: Greg Dunn Subject: Re: heather nova, _south_ Heh. I'm going to have to weigh in on this one, albeit belatedly. Heather is one of the few artists whose new releases fall into my "buy sight unseen" category. I've been following her music for about 6 years now, and have managed to figure out some things about the Heather Nova phenomenon (at least, I think I have...) This will be moderately long, and full of inductive logic, so feel free to skip. :-) The reason I still buy all of Heather's new releases is a complex one, but requires sorting her output into four categories, which overlap to some extent: 1) Studio recording, Felix Tod producing 2) Studio recording, someone else producing 3) Live recording, Felix producing 4) Live recording, someone else producing As far as I can tell, the only things that fit into category (4) are the live-for-TV shows like the Rockpalast and Pinkpop festivals that she does periodically. All her live tracks that you find on official CDs are category (3), and the studio albums are a mix of (1) and (2), often on the same disc. With the exception of "Glow Stars", I feel that her live recordings utterly blow away the studio tracks. Heather Nova live is an experience that actually comes through on the recordings, though not to the extent of surpassing the joy of seeing her front row center in a small theater. "Glow Stars", of course, was mostly live on a 4-track cassette recorder, guided by Felix's intuition and restrained by the inability to perform complex overdubs. Perhaps in the attempt to broaden her appeal, Heather often allows people like Youth, Jon Kelly and Bernard Butler to produce her studio tracks -- and let's face it, these guys have no reason to be loyal to Heather. They typically turned out slick, polished tracks that have most of the life sucked out of them. I have a test I perform on new HN discs: I listen, and guess whether Felix produced a particular track or not. On "South", I guessed almost 100% without looking at the liner notes... I've gathered, over the years, that a live Heather Nova recording is always worth repeat listens; that any Heather Nova recording handled by Felix Tod is better than the same work handled by someone else; and that for all the writing and performing talent poured into albums like "Oyster" and "Siren", the mere fact that they came together in a studio caused serious damage to the songs. :-) Back to "South". I actually heard several of the songs live on a special recorded in Berlin last summer, thanks to the kindless of some people on Heather's mailing list. After listening to "South", I was depressed at what happened to the music I had just been enjoying from the special. The same thing happened when I first heard "Oyster" after previewing most of its songs on live tour recordings. So I guess I buy her studio albums to make sure she can afford to keep making more tour stops, giving the songs a chance to be heard properly. :-) I'm sure to be delighted by the songs from "South" when I see her live (hopefully next summer). - -- | Greg Dunn | Using emacs as a text editor is | | gregdunn@indy.net | like using a car to listen to | | The Sultan of Slack(tm) | the radio. | | http://www.indy.net/~gregdunn/ | - Mike Campbell | ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 9 Dec 2001 19:59:26 EST From: RocketsTail@aol.com Subject: Re: heather nova, _south_ I do agree that even listening to Heather live is amazing and I definatly can't wait to hear what she does w/ these songs in concert...~eric "i think, I could love you if you'd let me drive your car" ~throwing muses ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 9 Dec 2001 19:36:06 EST From: KimberlyOliverA@aol.com Subject: some stuff... It was billed as "Nerissa and Katryna Nields And Friends", and the friends turned out to be Dave Chalfant on guitars and bass, Ben Demerath on guitar, bass and vocals, a fiddler named Alicia (at the early show) and cellist extraordinaire Gideon Freudmann (at the late show). But mostly it was just the two sisters on stage, with Nerissa on acoustic guitar and the two of them creating their gorgeous harmonies. Each show was quite different, with the only overlaps being the holiday songs: their contribution to Signature Sounds' new _Wonderland_ compilation; "Merry Christmas, Mr. Jones"; and two old-time carols, "Wassail, Wassail" and "The King" (which is one of my favorite things on Loreena McKennitt's _To Drive The Cold Winter Away_). They also did two homages to George Harrison during the evening: "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" and "Here Comes The Sun". They should record the former -- it was a stunning version, with Dave Chalfant doing gorgeous guitar work. It was five years and one day since the infamous "blizzard show" there, when the power went out and the band did the late show completely acoustic by candlelight. To commemorate that, they ended each show by standing at the top of the stairs on the top level and singing "This Happens Again And Again", one of the oldest Nields songs. Beautiful. As in 1996 it was snowing again ... but this time the power stayed on. The drive home was kind of a pain, but as always it was well worth it. The sisters have a new album, their first as a duo coming out on March 5, called _Love And China_. Judging from what I've heard of the songs it's going to have much more of a country feeling than the full-band work, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. I'm happy to see the sisters continuing to make music even though the boys of The Nields are now doing their own things. I got into the band mainly because of the harmonies (and yes, because Katryna and Nerissa are just so damned cute up there on the stage :), anyway. ======================================= Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth "an eye for an eye only ends up making the whole world blind" -- mahatma gandhi ======================================= Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://www.smoe.org/meth/muzak.html ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 09 Dec 2001 21:35:48 -0800 From: Jerene Waite Subject: Ms Siberry at the Coach House Any ectophiles going to hear Jane Siberry at the Coach House in Capistrano this Tuesday?
