Another sad day in a year of sad days. Respect due to the Quiet One, the Underrated One, and wave goodbye to another part of our lives that won't come this way again. adam k. The Beatles opened my mind to music and I feel as if I'd lost a good friend. Yet George himself was a spiritual person who accepted death as a part of life and was prepared to leave us. I thank him for the music and for his knowledge of life. All things must pass. Also Amy Jo Johnson (of Felicity fame) has a new album out: www.amyjojohnson.com -- I think some here would enjoy it. She has a really pretty voice... Yes, my favorite Beatle is gone. As pointed out on the Today show this a.m., now 2 Beatles haven't reached the age of 64....how sad. I went to see the opening band Elbow (http://www.elbow.co.uk/), a wonderful new UK group that I'd describe in brief as Peter Gabriel fronting Radiohead. Ethereal and edgy by turns. I got there almost 45 minutes late and pretty much missed their set. But they closed with my favorite song of theirs, "Scattered Black and Whites," an understated ballad about taking comfort in childhood memories: "been climbing trees, I've skinned my knees/my hands are black, the sun is going down.../I come back here from time to time/I shelter here some days." I'd never heard of Goldfrapp before the recent Ecto post about their TV appearance, but I was completely captivated by their music, and by the vastness of sound that they summoned from two keyboard players (one of which I assumed was Will Gregory, but from their online biography he might have been behind a mixing board instead), an electric violinist, a drummer and a singer (Alison Goldfrapp). They had three vocal mics on stage, two of which were connected to various distortion boxes, to re-create some of the otherworldly sounds on their album Felt Mountain. The violin player conjured up an entire string orchestra through some similar technical wizardry, and the singer alternated between her naturally beguiling, smoky vocals and simulating a boy's choir or a UFO. It was definitely not your stripped-down acoustic performance. The entire set was like a soundtrack for some bizarre and gorgeous film. And Alison Goldfrapp has an amazing stage presence: nothing flashy, just an innate grace like that of a ballet dancer and an obvious passion for the songs. A friend wrote me later saying "Really, commanding the stage is just a matter of comfort with where you are and who you are, and allowing the audience into your world." That's definitely what she was doing. I went on their website (http://www.feltmountain.com/) later and figured out that they'd played, among others, Lovely Head, Human, Pilots, and Utopia. They also played an Olivia cover, Physical, as part of an encore set -- a well-executed surprise. Very inspiring evening. - - Vienna ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V7 #343 **************************
