Hi folks, Just following up on a newsletter I got from Gary's excellent Artist Shop, I noticed something that made my jaw drop with amazement, and while it's far from ecto, I'm in the mood to share. Gary mentioned something called "Nearfest 2002", a regular festival that takes place in Trenton, NJ. It's a progressive music festival (yeah, okay, quiet in the back) and this coming year it's Saturday Headliners will be none other than the completely reformed NEKTAR. Yaaayyyyy!!!!. Gary says it's the first time in 21 years, but since Albrighton, the guitarist, actually split from the band earlier, it's probably more like 25, and this will be the absolute, original line-up, if what I've read it true, right down to the guy doing "Liquid Lights" for them. For all you prog heads out in ectoland (and I know you're out there) Nektar were, admittedly, one of the minor bands in the prog tables, but they were pretty amazing -- some predictably flakey lyrics and concepts, but a much heavier, bluesier, ballsier musical style, stemming more from improvisation and fun. Mo Moore is one of rock's great underrated bass players, and Ron Howden contributed solid drum patterns that were impressive without ever being flashy (as far as I can tell, in their entire recording career -- including live albums -- he has exactly one drum solo) "Taff" Freeman delivered extremely understated keyboards (no soloing from him, either) and the whole thing centered around the amazing, Hendrix-like guitars of Roye Albrighton, another mightily underrated genius. It would be fascinating to know if the old magic is still there after all this time, but the chances of me making it over there are very slim. But still, the thought of it, the very thought of it.... okay, that's my flashback of the day. adam k. I've never been a huge fan of Emm's music, probably didn't give it much of a chance but hearing "Pour Some Sugar On Me" makes me want to go back and listen to everything of hers I can get. Of the songs I've heard from "Girl Versions", they surpass most everything from Tori's "Strange Little Girls", which is a good cd and I love Tori but Emm's covers are so beautiful and ironic and nearly brilliant. Of course Tori's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" set the stage for people like Emm to do "Pour Some Sugar On Me", more than likely and Tori's covers of Led Zepplin, Stevie Nicks, etc. on just piano are magical..."Strange Little Girls" isn't that and "Girl Versions" is. Wow I'm babbling soooooooo much and it probably makes no sense but I don't care because I'm hitting send anyway ;). ~eric ~I heard you pulled me out of a church... to worship you" ~throwing muses ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Nov 2001 20:48:41 -0500 From: "Michael Colford" Subject: Re: Cover Wars (emm and tori) I've got to agree with Eric on this one. Emm Gryner's "Girl Versions" is one sublime album. For me, however, it's not really what Emm does with these cover version... although what she does is amazing, it's just how she makes these songs her own. I am captivated by Emm's mesmerizing voice and song stylings. There's an honesty in Emm's music that used to be in Tori's, but have found missing of late. I've only listened to Tori's "Strange Little Girls" a couple times, but it doesn't transport me anywhere the way "Girl Versions" does. There are some standout, sure, but for the most part, it's Tori doing Tori. I listened to "Little Earthquakes" this morning and was reminded of the talent and insight Tori possesses. I just haven't seen it in a little while. Then again, Tori does a terrific version of Joe Jackson's "Real Men." Michael C. n.p. Emm Gryner - "Girl Versions" n.r. I agree that Emm's stuff is beautiful, but in terms of scope and depth, Tori's covers are just way more complex. Anyway, I guess I'm a little biased, but it's just an opinion. There's nothing more beautiful though than really loving music is there?........
