Whether or not you like this cd depends on how you like the central conceit of Ms. Sandoval's singing. A little girl Lolita voice, distant, bored and slutty, without much range or power against vaguely folky, postmodern country--not quite slowcore, not quite pyschidelic. I like the vaporous, desultory sound myself, but not all the time. This is firmly a 2AM cd. Halou, "Wiser." If you can't wait for new Lamb cd to migrate to the states, Halou's new one should be good for what ails ya. Electronic, sample-happy music, with nods to torch, pop, St. Etienne, Everything But the Girl and Massive Attack. The singer Rebecca has a gorgeous voice, and while her lyrics aren't groundbreaking, her dramatic delivery of them is arresting. When she sings, I hear Liz Fraser, Sarah Cracknell, and even Sinead O'Connor. Ryan's backdrop is rich and varied--jazz, fuzz-guitar, strings appear in the background, but he doesn't upstage his wife's voice. I agree with Neile and Jim--high priority for folks into "femme-tronica". - --Craig ===== "Im a pessimist because of intelligence, but an optimist because of will."--Antonio Gramsci Make a great connection at Yahoo! AND, she's tentatively releasing a new album next year of original material!!!!!!!!!!! YAY!!!!!!!!!! So, I heard a rumor about a new Sneaker Pimps' album or something....anyone else interesting coming out with an album? Black Dove ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Oct 2001 12:34:45 -0500 From: "Moseley_Patrick" Subject: Left Hand Demos Just wanted to say -- WOW. Listening to Happy's "Left Hand Demos," I feel like I did the first time I heard Kate Bush's odds & sods CD from the "This Woman's Work" boxed set -- enthralled with a set of "homeless gems" that easily stand up to the good or even best of the artist's released material. Just to whet the appetite of those Ectophiles who haven't heard LHD yet, there's a little bit of something for everyone in the disc's 7 tracks. While her electronic MWABT sound is most heavily featured, fans of her vintage keyboard sound circa "Rhodes I" will be happy to hear "Miss You," those who liked the early drum programming and keyboards of "Rearmament" and "Ecto" will love "Rest in Pieces," and those who love her live/stripped-back sound a la "The Keep" have a couple of live tracks to devour. Sonically, it isn't perfect. My first listen was over headphones, and I found the sound to be a bit "hot" in places, and there was some tape fuzz as well. Out loud from a boombox or stereo, however, it sounds excellent -- comparable once again to her released material (to my ears, anyway). Like another Ectophile said earlier, Happy doesn't give herself enough credit. And I can't pick a favorite track. They're *all* good. But I am particularly enthralled with "Virus," though... is that not the lowest low note in recorded Happy history? (It definitely rivals the lows of "Beat it Out" and "Winter," that's for sure.) And as for the mail situation, for those curious: my disc was mailed to me on the 16th, but didn't show up in my mailbox until the 27th. Eleven days to make it from the west coast to the east coast. Thanks to everyone who worked to get this disc into our hands!! Be that as it may, it might have been a good way to get out of her contract with Atlantic by tossing off an effort, a la Prince. The weird thing about it is that she didn't get any publishing from the whole shebang because it's a cover album. Does anyone know if Atlantic is also her publishing company? If so, she may have smartly screwed them out of a pretty penny or two by not doing her own songs. Neat, huh? Weird - I'd heard about the new album of her own material before this one even came out, so I thought the whole thing was very, very premeditated. - - Katherine ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Oct 2001 11:54:53 -0800 (PST) From: "Xenu's Sister" Subject: Wacked-out SIG I just put on SIG here at work (I can listen to it at work now..wheee!) and found that something is seriously wacked-out. Chris is in Kansas City and suspects that someone tried to hack into the system and take it over (we're at war with some script kiddies), but in any case, there's nothing I can do about it until I get home from work tonight. Does it's certainly popular wisdom that a cover album is often a way to get out of a contract more quickly, that doesn't necessarily quite jibe with the amount of promo this one is getting...although once the company has decided to release the record, they clearly want to make as much back on it as they can, regardless of the artist's motives. - -- d. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Oct 2001 22:51:55 -0500 From: meredith Subject: alyth mccormack Hi, I heard a very interesting segment on NPR's "All Things Considered" this evening, an interview with the Scottish artist Alyth McCormack, who has a new album called _An Iomall_ ("The Edge"). She's on Compass Records (the same label that Kate Rusby is on, among others), and the bits they played from the CD sounded fascinating. She's not doing anything that hasn't been done before -- traditional Gaelic music backed with various bits of electronica -- but there's something about it that really caught my ear. I'll be picking the disc up shortly. The segment can be heard at http://www.npr.org/ramfiles/atc/20011029.atc.18.ram, and her web site is http://alyth.com. ======================================= Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth "an eye for an eye only ends up making the whole world blind" -- mahatma gandhi ======================================= Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://www.smoe.org/meth/muzak.html ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Oct 2001 22:57:13 -0600 (CST) From: "Mitchell A. By her own admission, Happy herself isn't entirely happy with the way all of the tracks turned out at the time they were first recorded; and not everyone likes all of Happy's recordings equally well. But I personally was favorably impressed with this disk. It is good that these historical tracks are getting some release.
