Our two year old son's daycare is across the street from the now famous post office. You could say I"m a little nervous about that! Our bills have made it through just fine-of course. I haven't been getting much "fun" mail, like the magazines I subscribe to, or catalogs. Is anyone going to see Richard Thompson at McCarter this Wednesday? Please post a review if you do :) Take care, Sherry ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 28 Oct 2001 16:40:04 From: "Lyle Howard" Subject: Coded Messages in Left Hand Demos Hello people, When you get _The Left Hand Demos_, open up the gatefold, or whatever you call the insert with recording information, and look at the picture of Happy Rhodes. If you look carefully you will see that Happy has chosen this forum to release some information I was certainly not aware of. There is an extremely subtle nodd to Steve Vai hidden in the photo. This knowledge certainly colors our view of Happy's body of work. We know about the influence of Bowie, Bush, Carlos, Queen, Yes, etc., on Happy's work, but now have evidence that Happy has spent many an hour drinking of the deep waters that are Steve Vai. I for one am preparing a paper for the next major popular culture convention. I am titling it "Steve Vai: The Antic Whammy Bar and Its Influence on the Melisma of Happy Rhodes." I haven't heard much comment on _The Left Hand Demos_. I was just going through some old mail that Nico(one of my cats) had saved for me; right after reading the most recent mailing. Ijust plain forgot that I was responding to the old mail, not the new. Sorry. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 28 Oct 2001 12:42:32 -0500 From: JoAnn Whetsell Subject: girl versions Emm Gryner's Girl Versions. I just got this yesterday and am just listening to it for the first time now. The 2nd track just finished. I *LOVE* this. Emm gets better and better with each album and with the simpler arrangements (this is mostly, if not entirely, her vocals and piano and a cellist). I can't comment on the songs as covers because I don't know the originals, except for "Pour Some Sugar On Me" which I barely recognize. I also can't compare it to Tori's _Strange Little Girls_ because I haven't heard even a clip from that album yet. But the recording is clear; this is gorgeous. This may now tie _Dead Relatives_ as my favorite Emm album, and I play that one *a lot*. It's one of the few albums I've gotten lately that almost every song gets stuck in my head at some point (over the summer and continuing). If you don't have this, get it. If you don't have _Dead Relatives_ yet, get them both. It's out on True North records - I guess Lynn's not with Rounder anymore (huh). I don't know whether this means that the album is only available in Canada right now. If so I know you can order it from A&B Sound at www.absound.ca... Anyway, "Unravel" is great. Seems to me that it's in a more country vein than "Night in a Strange Town", which I felt was quite overproduced. I don't think "Unravel" will quite hit the heights that "Slightly Haunted" (one of my favourite albums of all time) did for me but it's definitely going to be on my list for this year... - -sherlyn - -- Sherlyn Koo - sherlyn@fl.net.au "It really is that simple, It really is that fragile" - Peter Mulvey ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 28 Oct 2001 22:28:21 EST From: NYgirl1982@aol.com Subject: OT: Natalie Merchant Hey guys, any one going to the show here in NY on November 8th?? - -Kim Natalie Merchant singer/songwriter is releasing her new cd "Motherland this November 2001 please get a copy as this is a great cd also u can check out this singer/songwriters tour dates at : www.natalie-merchant.com while u are at it if u get the chance request her new single "Just Can't Last " at a radio station that u most listen to .- ( I need the darkness, the sweetness, the sadness, the weakness Oh, I need this I need a lullaby, a kiss goodnight, angel, sweet love of my life Oh, I need this Well is it dark enough Can you see me Do you want me Can you reach me Oh, I'm leaving Better shut your mouth, and hold your breath You kiss me now, you catch your death Oh, I mean this Oh, I mean this ) Natalie Merchant- My Skin from the album "Ophelia" Well they thought they could use you Push you down and abuse you And that's so sad Decided to hide all of your feelings Got more pain than you can deal with, But ask yourself, how can this last?-Natalie Merchant "Just Can't Last" off of the new album Motherland! ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Oct 2001 04:41:34 From: "Lyle Howard" Subject: Mail Hola, I just discovered that yesterday's ecto post was split in two. I read the 1K version this morning and just now discovered the larger posting. Sorry about the weird E-mail today. I'm not sorry about the weirdness, but the weird delivery. The send button is way too close to the Save Draft button on my E-mail setup. I guess no one is discussing Left Hand because it hasn't gotten to that many people. Phil mailed mine Friday a week ago and it arrived yesterday (27th). I was anticipating three or four days. The good news is my sad little life was brightened for five minutes everyday as I walked to the mailbox, thinking, I bet _The Left Hand Demos_ will come today. Then as I walked back with my bills and my junk mail I said, Ah, but it will come tomorrow and joy will ring through the mountains and hillsides. And then I sang: The hills are alive with the sound of music. So, anyway. I will wait till you all receive your Demos before gushing about the music. Developing patience is good for your soul. Happy hasn't lost the knack. Your appetite will be whetted for a full length album. Lyle P.S.
