I've been talking to Phil over the last week about helping with distribution, and judging by the number he's delegating to me, there are quite a few people still waiting. The task of producing quantities of CDRs of decent quality is definitely easier said than done. Give it a few more weeks. I will urge Phil et al to post a note to ecto when the backlog is all shipped, so that if you don't receive yours within a week of that notice, speak up then. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 27 Oct 2001 11:40:36 -0700 From: Sherlyn Koo Subject: RE: To the LH Demos providers Hey folks, Foghorn J Fornorn said: >Give it a few more weeks. On a more general note - what is the state of the US postal service right now? I posted a letter from Vancouver two days ago - that would have been the 25th. It needs to be in Kentucky by October 31st. Is there any chance it'll make it? News reports say that increased screening may add a day or two to mail deliveries at the most, and that (for the time being) is primarily for mail in/out of Washington DC and New York City. I've seen US mail coast-to-coast take as little as 3 days and as much as 2 weeks, and that was pre-disaster. Average is probably 5 days. Given yours is international, 6 days is cutting it a little close, unless you sent it with priority postage, or air mail. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 27 Oct 2001 15:53:36 -0400 From: "Foghorn J Fornorn" Subject: RE: Jewel & luck In the wake of the WTC disaster, many have set aside their longstanding Boston-New York rivalry. Things are tangled, with a lot of processing being shifted to different facilities on the East Coast and more care being taken with procedures. I did have a good laugh yesterday: I was in the unemployment office when someone came in with a half-burnt check. It seems that she had heard someone say on the radio to put all mail in the microwave. Fortunately, she was also amused at the result, and the office-workers were gracious about expediting a replacement. - -- |> ~The only thing that is not art is inattention~ --- Marcel Duchamp <| | jzitt@metatronpress.com http://www.metatronpress.com/jzitt | | Latest CD: Jerusaklyn http://www.mp3.com/josephzitt | | Comma: Voices of New Music Silence: the John Cage Discussion List | ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 27 Oct 2001 18:10:32 -0400 From: meredith Subject: RE: Jewel & luck Hi, Fog opined: >In the wake of the WTC disaster, many have set aside their longstanding >Boston-New York rivalry. Well, that's his problem. :) woj alluded to Frank Deford's insightful NPR commentary this week. Mr. Deford rightly asserted that if the Yankee-haters set aside their loathing for the pinstriped ones, then we really haven't gotten back to normal, and the terrorists will indeed have won. As a lifelong Red Sox fan, I find it no easier to set aside my genetic hate for the Yankees than it would be to change my skin color. This isn't to say that I don't have a newfound respect for the Big Apple since September 11th. As Deford said to close out his commentary, "I love New York. It wasn't Gates who made Blue Boxes, it was Steve Wozniak and Steve Jobs, which led them to the Homebrew Computer Club, which led them to create the first personal computer that anyone could buy and for which other companies and individuals developed and sold software, a status that the predecessors to the Apple II could not claim. The 'boxes were not to steal service, they were to explore the system. That was the whole point. Just because some people later used them to steal rather than explore doesn't demean the original purpose. Gates never came up with anything original in his life in the technological arena; his permanent claim to fame will be his predatory marketing schemes. XP's look is a direct steal from MacOSX, but without the UNIX microkernel. Just like Windows has always been copying the innovator. That's why he bought shares at Apple's weakest time; besides the settlement for stealing QuickTime code (and getting caught because the company was too stupid to remove the embedded copyright!) if Apple died, who would they use to fund their R&D? Even though the MacOS is also a closed, proprietary system, it is a hell of a lot friendlier than M$, and for everyone who has a commitment to Intel/AMD architecture, Red Hat and other Linux developers, and a vibrant, active community, will provide a Microsoft-free alternative that eventually will become as easy to use and install as the Mac. If you have ever looked at a large corporate network based on M$, you know how greedy M$ really is, especially when it comes to licensing server modules. Now back to our regular non-religious discussions. Michael ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V7 #307 **************************
