Any suggestions to some good websites for used CDs? well i've never actually purchased from them but i have to admit that http://www.eil.com/ has one of the best selections of rare and used CD's that i have ever seen. they specialized in deleted and specialty items, and i often see listed promotional copies, imports, deleted copies, and collectable items there that i have never seen in stores. has anyone used them? i keep on getting referred to them on all the artists website (like CYNDILAUPER.com has a link to them) but i have never actually purchased anything so i don't know how reliable they are. by the way if you like DUSTY TRAILS you should run out and get THE KOSTARS album KLASSICS WITH A K. a side project by LUSCIOUS JACKSON (before DUSTY TRAILS came about) the tracks aren't quite as ambient and soundtrackish as DUSTY TRAILS but they are equally as beautiful. the lineup of the song ROLL THE DICE i think is the same as the lineup for DUSTY TRAILS, if you want to get a sense of what the album is like. and i do think that DUSTY TRAILS is an EXCELLENT EXCELLENT album. i believe i read in an interview with VIVIAN and JOSEPHINE that they wanted to make an album that was a soundtrack to an unspecified nonexistant road trip movie. i think they succeeded wonderfully. if you like this album, try tracking down THE MISADVENTURES OF ST. ETIENNE, which was the soundtrack for the film THE MISADVENTURES OF MARGARET starring the fabulous PARKER POSEY. i think the soundtrack was released in JAPAN on a limited edition copy, but it's quite wonderful. if you like DUSTY TRAILS or if you like ST. ETIENNE's more atmospheric work, than it is quite worth the effort. irvin ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Oct 2001 09:51:03 EDT From: RockChic02@aol.com Subject: Fwd: Phone Fraud A friend sent this to me, I don't know if it's true, but I thought better safe than sorry.... In my experience, quite a high percentage of used CDs in general consists of promos, particularly in big cities like New York and San Francisco. I'm finding out why -- the owner of the firm that will be distributing my record company's next two releases told me that I should count on giving away at least 400 (!) promotional copies to music critics, radio stations and distributor sales reps. And that's for a tiny indie -- major labels will throw around thousands of promos. For out of print stuff, I personally don't see that big a difference between buying a promo or a regular used copy, except for the aesthetic reason of not wanting a hole punched in the bar code or whatever. When I was selling OOP CDs on eBay, though, I made sure to describe any promotional stamps or markings -- any ethical seller should let you know exactly what you're getting, and to many buyers, the condition of the packaging is almost as important as the condition of the CD itself. When in doubt, ask. (Fun tip for people who are sending out promo copies -- put a unique code number on the back of every promo. That way, when you find one of your CDs in a used bin, you can figure out who sold it!) - --Sue Trowbridge ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Oct 2001 10:01:54 -0700 From: Phil Hudson Subject: RE: Used CDs - -----Original Message----- From: Sue Trowbridge [mailto:trow@interbridge.com] Sent: Tuesday, October 16, 2001 9:56 AM To: ecto@smoe.org Subject: RE: Used CDs (Fun tip for people who are sending out promo copies -- put a unique code number on the back of every promo. Also, I read somewhere ( maybe here!) that if one is selling directly to stores, to physically mark any promo CDs so that they cannot send them back for *full* credit at a later date. Many stores apparently do this. Weasels abound at all levels in the music biz. My Vienna Teng CD arrived on Saturday, and I've been listening to it almost non-stop ever since. Her CD, Waking Hour, is absolutely marvelous. With superb piano play, a lush, melodic voice, and smart, heart-warming lyrics, I'd say that Vienna Teng should be at the top of any Ectophile's list. Waking Hour is as brilliant a debut album as they come. Thanks to Phil for recommending her. If you don't have Waking Hour, waltz over to www.viennateng.com. And if you buy her CD, don't miss "Between," a song about love that's been broken apart. "Between" has a rhythm that varies as the song goes along, keeping in close step with the song's changing emotions. What's especially wonderful about Waking Hour is how the music by itself carries so much passion. There's so much talent packed in this CD that it feels like it's about to burst. ( like having to stop to listen to "Waking Hour", for example) It truly is a remarkable and wonderful work and I'm glad that Bill read my delirious rantings and acted on them by checking out Vienna's website. Like Bill, I found "Between" a great song, with some nice electric undertones and few lovely surprises here and there. Gravity is also a powerful and evocative song that has more than once found itself on constant repeat in my player for a few hours. Both Vienna's musical breadth and the scope of her writings are really very impressive. A few more comparisons have sprung to mind since my last post about Waking hour: as previously mentioned, Vienna has the ability to sound like a goodly number of different people while still maintaining a completely separate musical identity. I mentioned Sarah M and Judy Tzuke as examples. Iona is another band that comes to mind and in a couple of the songs, I can hear distant traces of Marillion (!) Gee. Me too. Only I don't have good excuses like working on the LH demos. Oh well. After somebody (Phil? somebody else? don't recall) ranted about Vienna's album, I had a listen at her site and promptly ordered two copies -- one for me and one for my folks (I knew that when I played the disc for them, they'd start hassling me about where *their* copy was, so I headed them off at the pass). So here's another "ooh! yeah! check her out!" comment. The album is quite wonderful, for all the reasons already stated. For those of you who already have the album, take a closer look at the website - -- there are a few bonus tracks you can download in mp3, including an alternate version of "Gravity" and the instrumental "Waking Hour" (is it a title track if it's a b-side?) jeff n.p. _Hedwig and the Angry Inch_ movie soundtrack ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Oct 2001 21:15:05 -0500 (CDT) From: kerry white Subject: Richard Thompson Hi, This weekend on PBS' Austin City Limits is Richard Thompson and Eliza Gilkyson.
