New stuff.. A review I did for opuszine.com on Molly Zenobia's Wind Chains.. Molly Zenobia is by turns surspising, scary, and intricate. Her voice slices her piano-based songs into little pieces with surgical precision. She plays her instrument of choice like she was born to do it. Ghostly moans and water splashes adorn the frosty "Mermaids". She makes her snakelike whisper resonate on "Silent Spring". Zenobia shares a few traits with the reigning queen of the piano, Tori Amos; but the style is all her own. If "Wind Chains" had a color it would be an icy blue with pitch black highlights. The music on it is slow, with a lot of feeling and enough twists and turns to make it challenging. Zenobia takes you down the tunnels of her mind and it's a rollercoaster ride. She is a natural born chiller. If gothic music lived up to it's name this is what it would sound like. Bjork Vespertine In which the icelandic enchantress makes a wintry, but intimate new album. Her voice has seldom been stranger or more expressive, her melodies are evasive but beautiful. The single is hardly a hit but haunts the mind anyhow. Stellar stuff. Laurie Freelove Invisible Invisible Beautiful, evocative record. On Damn Fool Freelove's voice sounds sandblasted with emotion and force like Tom Waits' long lost daughter. Girlfriend loops the same phrase "If i was your girlfriend" over and over to become a plea, a prayer even. The effect is startling. I bought it months ago and still listen to it regularly. I know the band used to make more acoustic rock music but this album really took a trip-hop/electronic highway. The great thing is that they produce some really great beats and sounds while still keeping their awesome melodies and lyrics. The first song, 'Je reviens' is electronics-free and completely marvelous. As are many other songs on there. It's a must in my opinion. ______________________________________________________ E-mail gratuit - Multimania - http://www.multimania.fr ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 1 Oct 2001 11:06:34 -0400 From: Jeff Wasilko Subject: Sarah Harmer on David Letterman (Rescheduled date) - ----- Forwarded message from Brent Mazur ----- Sarah Harmer on the Late Show - RESCHEDULED DATE On Tuesday, October 2, Sarah will be performing Don't Get Your Back Up on Late Night with David Letterman. It's been a while since the > release of her first record and the huge success of her single "Ripped off"... errr, I > meant to say, "Thorn" heh heh. actually the song TORN was monster huge here in the states, though i have to admit that i like the original version by EDNASWAP better. but i also have to admit that i like NATALIE IMBRUGLIA's LEFT OF THE MIDDLE album better than either EDNASWAP albums that i have. you can actually download tracks from the WHITE LILIES ISLAND album here and there on the internet, if you search hard enough, or if you use the right program (try gnuetella or morpheus). i've had the album (albeit a poorly ripped version of the album, certain songs skip) for about two or three weeks. the album itself isn't as engaging as her first album i don't think, but there are some definite great songs. it's pretty much LEFT OF THE MIDDLE, the sequel, but the second track WRONG IMPRESSION will most certainly be a hit for her (if not in the states, in EUROPE and AUSTRALIA). the lyrics are rather inane ("didn't want to leave you with the wrong impression, didn't want to leave you with my last confession. yeah. of love. wasn't trying to pull you in the wrong direction. all i wanted to do was make a connection...") but the song starts out with some a few violin strokes and then go into a nice wash of guitars (ala LUSH or THE SUNDAYS which she has said influenced her songwriting. though the sound isn't near as sophisticated as either). pretty euro radio friendly ifyou ask me. whether or not it will hit over here in the states, we'll have to see. other standout tracks seem to be SATELLITE (not related to SLEEPING SATELLITE by TASMINE ARCHER or SATELLITES by RICKIE LEE JONES). more organic sounding, it has a certain acoustic sound very reminiscent of ONCE BLUE (are they still around anymore?) or WORKSHY (are they still around anymore?). GOODBYE which sounds very similar to the song that NATALIE did for the STIGMATA soundtrack (IDENTIFY). and the closing songs COME SEPTEMBER which is actually quite pretty. hope this helps. does anyone know who produced the album? just curious. irvin ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 1 Oct 2001 12:45:47 -0700 From: "Emily Perkins" Subject: RE: natalie imbruglia Once Blue isn't around anymore, but Rebecca Martin had a solo album out in '99. The Ectophiles' Guide's entry on Autour de Lucie can be found at http://www.ectoguide.org/guide.cgi?artists/autour.de.lucie and has good some basic information about them (though it hasn't been updated with the new album yet).
