Yep, that pretty much sums up my feelings about this CD. I think it would be more appropriate as a bonus disc to accompany actual *new* material. But as it stands it looks to me like another cynical marketing exercise.... I stand by my initial opinion: I might get it second-hand further down the track, but there's no way I'd pay full price for this. - ---------------------------------------------------- "People who make peaceful change impossible make violent change inevitable." - ---------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Sep 2001 09:30:45 -0400 From: strange little woj Subject: susan mckeown news Date: Fri, 21 Sep 2001 00:58:04 -0400 To: sngmusic@earthlink.net From: Sheila-na-Gig Music Subject: SUSAN McKEOWN in NYC I wish to extend my deepest sympathy to any of you who lost friends or family on September 11. I was on tour in California with Jon and Lindsey when we heard the news, and we wanted to be back in Manhattan. We drove on up the coast to Oregon, listening each day to NPR. In Portland we met two friends who had lost a friend and a family member. In Eugene we saw people wearing "I Love New York" t-shirts, and when I introduced the band members as being from New York there was an extra loud cheer. We returned with heavy hearts, but it's good to be home. Months ago we booked this date at FEZ as a co-bill with my Irish friends Kmla, but in the wake of the recent unfortunate events, they had to cancel their tour. I am delighted to inform you that my good friend Dorothy Scott will join us as a special guest. Dorothy and I used to play together often at Sin-i. Earlier this summer, I recorded harmony vocals for a number of tracks on her forthcoming album. On Tuesday, we'll sing some songs together and hope to spread, as she would say, a little peace and harmony. I didn't bother supplying a subject line. I think you figured out the subject was Norah Jones and the eBlitz Shuttle Player (MP3). The biggest problem with my rushing was that I mentioned Norah Jones being something like Paula Cole. Well, I don't know a thing about Paula Cole. However, I have listened to Holly Cole some and see Norah Jones slipping into the jazzy poppy female vocalist strata (stratum?) that Holly is in. It's ok, a little like I feared when looking at the song titles. I thought it might vear too close to schmaltzy, and I think it does. I haven't listened more than in passing though, so perhaps I should give it more of a chance. And actually, I don't really care how the rest of his catalog is. He seems worthy of admiration simply for that transendant version of Somewhere Over The Rainbow/What A Wonderful World. I *had* to find out who that was the very moment I heard this tune played during the closing titles of "Meet Joe Black" (there's another movie since which has used this tune at the end). The medley is just beautifully and warmly done. Even if the rest of the CD is "too hawaiian" or "too schmaltzy" for some, _Somewhere Over The Rainbow/What A Wonderful World_ is well worth the two copies I have purchased.
