Woe to the Tori collectors...:) Peace > Always, Megan At the record shop where I bought the album they only had the "Strange Little Girls" cover. Only a single copy had the "I don't like Mondays" cover, that I took immediately. I've only seen two different covers and > bought the one with the cowboy hat. according to THE DENT (www.thedent.com) there are FOUR different covers available in the US, which explains why all the advertising for her album has four different pictures on the front of the CD. there are also a few different covers in other countries, including alternative photos that were shot during the photo sessions but didn't make it into the book, that don't appear in the book, but are the same character. you can find all the images at THE DENT. i have had the album for about a week now (in my impatience, it downloaded last week), so i haven't bought it yet. i am kinda less than impressed with it. i agree with whoever said that the songs don't have the same umph that her older covers did. i'll probably buy the album just to have it in my collection but i'll probably buy it once it hits the cheaper used bins.... on the same token, i also agree with the person who said that this "concept" is really just a cover up for the fact that this is just a cover album. i sort of wish she would have just released a 6 song "concept" EP and then went on and released some new original material.... i haven't really listened to it that much to be fair. i have been too busy listening to the new GARBAGE and the new CYNDI LAUPER. irvin ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Sep 2001 03:50:55 From: "Lyle Howard" Subject: [none] Bon Soir, Finally I have something to say about music. This evening I was listening to _The World_ on NPR and a newswoman played a couple of cuts from Charlie Hunters new CD, _Songs from the Analog Playground_. She wasnt playing the cuts so we could hear Hunters very competent jazz guitar playing but so that we could hear Norah Jones. My ears perked up when I heard her name because I read an article about her a couple of weeks ago in the Dallas Observer and she sounded like a good candidate for ecto apotheosis. After hearing her, I think she will be a hit with you guys. She has a soulful voice, writes her own songs, and is a jazz pianist. She may be coming up hard on Paula Coles heels. She has an album coming out in February on Blue Note. There are snippets from Charlie Hunters new CD on Amazon. I didnt have the patience to sit and go through the songs looking for the two that Norah sings on. But you may be more persistent than I. Go to the following location on the net if you want to read the article from the Observer. http://dallasobserver.com/issues/2001-09-06/music2.html I broke down last weekend and bought a cheap MP3 player. Cheap is the operative word. It goes for 30 dollars. It is the eBlitz Shuttle, sold by Magix, the German music software maker. The official name of the thing is Music Maker eBlitz edition. The good news is you also get an MP3 making program and Music Maker. Music Maker is my favorite do-it-yourself loop making software. You can put your own little techno/dance/rock and roll things together using loops and individual hits from drums and other instruments. Just cobble a little song together and call yourself a genius. Its good for the psyche. (PS, I have helpful hints for composing in Music Maker if anyone is interested.) I tried the player out on Sunday. I was going for a run so I thought it would be nice to carry the player. I loaded the software, hooked up the USB line to the little blue MP3 player and, being an optimist, insisted that it load Mozarts _Requiem_. It was happy to load the first two movements for me. Ten minutes worth of music. The fidelity of the player isnt great, but it may be a smidgeon better than stereo FM radio. It certainly doesnt fade in and out the way radios do when you run. But there is background noise that is annoying when there is silence. When the music plays, the noise is covered by the music. The first part of one movement stuttered a bit. There is a slot for a MultiMedia card so that you can boost the players memory. I will probably pop one of those in sometime in the next couple of weeks. I will let you know if more memory improves the sound. Those cards are a little expensive, so it might be better to purchase an MP3 player that starts out with enough memory for thirty or sixty minutes worth of music. But it sure is nice to have your own music to listen to while you run, without a heavy player weighing you down, and without having to spend a hundred and a half or two hundred dollars. Thats about all I have to say. Only posted 3 or 4 times, usually a smart aleck remark (continuing my search for the perfect one-liner). The depression I've been in the last week and a half tells me I need to come out of lurk mode and talk. I'd like to thank everyone for the intelligent conversation last week and for trying to move on this week. The psychotropic paranoids on the terraobscura music list are still beating the US government up and I'm just deleting their messages these days. I was already a tad down this year, been a bad one for a few of my favorite 60's iconical influences. First we lost John Fahey, then Fred Neil, and most recently Mimi Farina. They all helped shape my musical tastes and I will always miss them. My two questions are: I stopped at the used CD store after work today (Buzzard's, down by the newest UW campus) and spent 2/3's of my $300 rebate check on 14 CD;s and 5 Videos. One of the CD's is a PJ Harvey bootleg of a live NY concert (she says it's her 4th. time playing there). It's an import from Paraguay...Hummingbird label... Send Your Love To Me. Excellent stuff, except the "bonus" tracks skip. I only have To Bring You My Love (just bought today, ain't played it yet) and Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea (bought on the excellent suggestion of people on this very list...thank you). If anyone is familiar with the boot, Send Your Love To Me, maybe they could fill me in on where it fit's in her little universe. Second question (not so verbose I promise): During finals week last May our little campus radio station KUPS went into auto-robot mode and played a song that even the live DJ's back on the air now can't tell me the title/artist of. It's a quirky little girls voice with a decidedly gravelly edge (think Betty Boop crossed with Rod Stewart) and the hook in the chorus line went something like "Push the little daisy's and watch them grow up.... ". Can anyone enlighten me? Thanks for any help on the two ????'s. Belated introductory remarks include falling in love with Maria Muldaur back in about '66 when Jim Kweskin's Jug Band was on the Smother Brothers. Been a Kate Bush fan since The Kick Inside (always wondered what she had on under that London Fog on Sat. Nite Live.) Read about Cindy Lee in an Utne Reader piece on (then) current Women in Music. Bought Who's Gonna Save the World, saw her at the Moore Theatre for the WGSTW tour opening for Billy Bragg. (Young Fresh Fellows were there but I was late.) Don't know if Bill or YFF can save the world but I know Cindy Lee has a good shot at it. A couple of searches over the years lead me to reviews in the EctoGuide. I read and moved on. The link on Cindy Lee's site lead me there once. After searching for the source of that ethereal voice dueting with Natalie Merchant on Ophelia, the name Karen Perris sent me to the EctoGuide again. I poked around in some depth, signed on and ain't looked back. Discovered Happy, Jane, Jill, etc....Innocence Mission rapidly moved up to the top of favorite list. Jonathan sent me the pre-release for Two Loons For Tea's first album 6 months ago, love it. Thank you Neille. Looking forward to the new one. Slack key music is a personal favorite. If Neal would like to know more about Israel Kamakawiwo`oleIz and the roots of his music, we could start a thread. I ain't the biggest fan of Iz but the Gabby he dedicated Somewhere Over the Rainbow/What A Wonderful World is the tops. Right up there with Cindy Lee, Rahsaan, Kate, Happy, Dylan, and George Winston in my humble opinion. Well, the PJ boot has cycled through twice. Time to try out To Bring You My Love.
