It's a typical post-ectofest kind of day here, with groggy or unconcious ectophiles on most soft sufaces and a few hungry cats prowling the house. Yesterday's fest went off wonderfully. You couldn't ask for better weather. Well, ok, you could probably ask for a few more clouds every once and a while, but it was pretty mild and sunny. The goose poop quotient was down, but the bees were up, and probably not a lot of us are wishing eternal bliss and happiness to the obnoxious wedding next door. Locals Jargon Society got the day off to a good start. Their twin guitars, cello and drum combination made them instantly intriguing, as well as the fact that many of them sang lead. It was somewhat of an odd afternoon in the sun sort of band, seeming a bit more suitable for a bar show. Their sound had a touch of Tsunami and a hint of Scrawl, as well as probably a number of punk/pop type bands (identifying and quanitfying them all seems a fine homework assignment for Don). A little raw, but an intriguing set. They had a 3 song demo for sale for 3 bucks, so it was kind of hard to resist. The Mila Drumke Band was up next, and performed what seemed to me a fairly typical Mila set. All the Mila fans seemed happy, and I still wasn't won over. As before, the most striking aspect for me was Lyris violin playing, and how it works off of the band. Molly Zenobia played next. I'd never heard her beyond a few samples on her web site, and was very interested to see what she was all about. I think this was probably the highlight of the day for me, as it was the most striking and original set. (Of course, Molly and Jargon Society were the only people I hadn't seen before, so they had the biggest chance to surprise me.) I bought both of Molly's CD's, and it's going to take me a good while before I can absorb her music. She plays keyboard, and had a drummer and guitar player with her. Her keyboard playing is rich and varied. Not quite as wild as Veda's can get, but pretty expressive. I don't seem to have much of a vocabulary to describe it at the moment. It was a fairly unfamiliar sound, with a few frames of reference that I thought were there yesterday, but seem to elude me today. She seems a very promising performer to watch, and pretty prolific given that she already has two CD's out. Rachel Sage took the stage in her usual flash of color and glitter. Her set seemed a bit more pumped up then I remember from a few years ago. (THe first ectofest was my introduction to her.) Since then, I've gotten two of her albums and had become familiar with her work. Her keyboard and singing was accompanied by a variety of drumming from Dean Sharp, and occasionally complimented by some phenomenal improv harmonica playing by Trina Hamlin. Trina and Rachel were a great musical team, though they make a hilarious pair. The colorful, flamboyant and somewhat flighty Rachel contrasted amusingly with the Trina's earthiness. Trina's set was also really solid. She's an amazing harmonica player. I can't really think of what distinguishs her from the army of girls with guitars who are out there now, though maybe it's just that there is such solid quality and musicianship running through everything she does. It all adds up to something that seems more than the sum of the parts. Trina's presence added a lot to the evening, as she was pulled on to compliment Rachel's and Edie Carey's sets. Her interplay with the other performers was one of the highlights of the day. Edie Carey ended the day with a somewhat dizzy and breathless set. She'd just come in from Oklahoma, and seemed a bit unfocused, though I don't know if that is typical of her performances anyway. She seemed to have a heavy dose of Jonatha Brooke infused with a smattering of Melissa Ferrick. Postfest many of the ectophiles ended up at Chuck and Joe's house again. We got to visit with the exuberant musician inspired dogs (Happy and Aimee) and enjoyed an excellent spread of food, ending with an incredibly dense and decadant chocolate cake with the somewhat confusing enscription "Happy 10th Anniversary Ecto-Fest". Much music was heard, and many people were ridiculed. And we continued the very odd ecto tradition of late night glasses fittings. All in all, an excellent day and a lot of fun. Kudos to Chuck and Meth for pulling off another fine festival and managing to maintain the appearance that they are having a good time throughout the day. Oh yeah, a very nice ectofest banner showed up this year, and the black and bright green model of the ectofest t-shirt is definitely a keeper. The Tori 3-song sampler was also nice to hear (though nicer at meth 'n' woj's then at the fest). '97 Bonnie and Clyde is very unnerving, and Neil Young's Heart of Gold was amazing and unrecognizable. The songs don't really sound like Tori covers of old, but instead wild re-imaginings of each of the songs. neal ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 26 Aug 2001 12:59:59 -0400 From: Paul Blair Subject: Upcoming Sloan Wainwright gigs Been meaning to post this ever since I got the schedule via snail mail... this is off Sloan's website at : September, 2001 Sunday, September 2 The Town Crier Cafe Pawling, NY 845-855-1300 8:00pm Saturday, September 8 and Sunday September 9 Colorscape Chenango Norwich, NY 607-336-FEST [mail card says she's on at 2:00 Sunday, Sept. 9, rain or shine] Tuesday, September 11 The Living Room 84 Stanton Street New York, NY 212-533-7237 9:00pm Monday, September 17 with Chris Barron and Larry John McNally VJV Music Songwriters Circle The Meadows, 1141 County Route 114 Fosterdale, NY 854-887-5568 8:00pm Sunday, September 23 Caffe Lena with Anne O'Meara Heaton and Ina May Wool 47 Phila Street Saratoga Springs, NY 7:00pm Monday, September 24 New York Songwriters Circle The Bitter End 147 Bleeker Street New York, NY 212-673-7030 8:00pm Back to the top October, 2001 Wednesday, October 3 Greenwich Village Bistro 13 Carmine Street New York, NY 212-206-9777 9:00pm ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 26 Aug 2001 10:28:39 -0700 From: "Angel's Shadow" Subject: Fw: MyBrilliantBeast.fazed: NEWS In case anybody's interested in My Brilliant Beast news... - ----- Original Message ----- From: "My Brilliant Beast" To: Sent: Friday, August 24, 2001 10:38 PM Subject: MyBrilliantBeast.fazed: NEWS > > ======================================================================== > FAZED ::: The official mailing list of My Brilliant Beast > ::: http://MyBrilliantBeast.com > ::: for August 25, 2001 > ======================================================================== > > This should be more readable :) Thanks! > > IN THIS ISSUE... > > 1. I adore My Brilliant Beast, but I confess I'll be shocked if they finally do release their full-length album. I've had the ep since 1995 and they've been promising the album since then. I'm sure I'll love the disc if/when it does show up, though. For the curious, The Ectophiles' Guide has a page for My Brilliant Beast at http://www.smoe.org/ectoguide/guide.cgi?artists/my.brilliant.beast I was also delighted to discover that David Usher has a new solo disc out. Each is a labelled plastic bag with odd contents. Here, in their own words is what's in them: The Complete Shotgun Wedding! Includes a fresh copy of "A Big World of Fun" (Lynn's favorite of all time), a Shotgun Wedding Songbook, Shotgun Wedding's "A Big Book of Fun", some little toy thingie, and collectible color cards of SW songs. Fun but not edible! The Complete Lynn Canfield COMIX Collection!! Includes big Dang Comix #1, 2, and 3, the Shotgun Wedding Wall Calendar, Moon Seven Times promo booklets, Shotgun Wedding Songbook, "Shotgun Wedding's "A Big Book of Fun", collectible color cards of SW songs, & the Lynn Canfield and Hot Tub party Tourbook. Don't read them on an empty stomach or by candlelight! no fair swimming with them either. Late Period Moon Seven Times! Includes the nearly impossible to find final Moon Seven Times disc, "Sunburnt", which was produced by Grammy Award winning producer/engineer/singer/superchick Trina Shoemaker, a copy of the very impossible to find 45" "Pre-Burnt", one of the last in existence 8x10 glossies of the band, and all the little promo booklets. Plus maybe a toy. All are unopened. I've forgotten what they cost. Anyone interested in buying them? They'll go to the best offer I get by 11:59 PM Sunday, September 2. The buyer would also pay Priority Mail postage (each would fit in a Priority Mail envelope). I'm only offering them here on Ecto, BTW, since I figure there's the best odds of finding someone who would actually be interested in them here. (BTW, in each case, the toy is a little plastic frog. Explanations of its significant is left to the post-graduate canfieldologists.) I'm also going to be putting a bunch of CDs up for sale, but have only typed up about 100 of them, so it may take a bit before the list is up. - -- |> ~The only thing that is not art is inattention~ --- Marcel Duchamp <| | jzitt@metatronpress.com http://www.metatronpress.com/jzitt | | Latest CD: Jerusaklyn http://www.mp3.com/josephzitt | | Comma: Voices of New Music Silence: the John Cage Discussion List | ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V7 #240 **************************
