Pepper McGowan (formerly Acton) has a new limited-release CD out, called Bad Stars. It's pretty different from Marrow but still well worth getting if you're a fan. I miss the feel of songs like "To Johnny" and "Reba" on Marrow, but her songwriting does have a more mature feel to it. There's a sample song at www.adoptaband.com/peppermcgowan/ ("Anything But Apples") that is pretty representative of her new sound, though not my favorite song on the album. You can order the CD by sending a check for $10 to Pepper at P.O. Box 43552, Cleveland, OH 44143. You may want to e-mail her first though (PepperMcGowan@aol.com) to make sure she has copies available. The discs she's sending out now are from the 30 first-run copies, which might be gone by now. She's supposed to be producing another 100 this fall. - -Emily ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 15 Aug 2001 15:36:27 EDT From: RocketsTail@aol.com Subject: Re: pepper mcgowan I'm a huge Pepper fan..."bad stars" is just Pepper sitting down with her piano playing some new acoustic songs and some covers, it's worth picking up because it's beautiful. She's working on a new cd with a new band though so keep a look out for that. -eric "maybe you can keep me from ever being happy but you're not going to stop me from having fun" ~ani diFranco ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 15 Aug 2001 13:29:50 -0700 From: Cyoakha Subject: Re: ectoguide thanks Neil, thank you for all your work on the guide pages, it was fun to see my new album listed and go on and see the comments. Hi all, I've been lost in a whirlwind the past few months and a friend just informed me that Sam Phillips has a new album out. She's one of my favorite artists and I've ordered it, but in the meantime, anyone heard it? If so, do tell! Alan ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 15 Aug 2001 20:59:36 -0400 From: Telisa Subject: Sarah Fimm Hello everyone, Has anyone heard of Sarah Fimm? I don't remember anyone mentioning her. I just bought her cd from CDBaby and really enjoyed it so I thought I'd recommend it here. Here's some info from her webpage below. Her CD description says "Lovingly eccentric and moody...a real treat...or trick? RIYL: Tori Amos and Leonard Cohen." www.sarahfimm.com "There are certain elements of eccentricity shared by the creative and the crazy. Perhaps all that separates these people is their level of productivity. On her debut recording, Cocooned, Sarah Fimm delivers a sound that perfectly articulates productive eccentricity with creative insanity. The result is a sound where beauty and misery occupy the same space. The sounds on Cocooned come from a person who was kicked out of a parochial elementary school for spewing sexual innuendo. Sarah Fimm grew up listening to Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits and Tori Amos - just the sounds needed to warp an innocent, impressionable mind into the kind of fabulous disaster capable of creating the recording now known as Cocooned." - -telisa ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 15 Aug 2001 21:16:45 -0400 From: Michael Curry Subject: Over the Rhine news! >Date: Tue, 14 Aug 2001 11:28:00 -0400 (EDT) >From: OTRhine@aol.com >Subject: A smattering of things... > >PRE-ORDER THE OVER THE RHINE TRIBUTE ALBUM > >The 2 CD Tribute set, "What it Takes to Please You" was put together by OTR >listies Bruce Lachey and Drew Vogel and features submission's of various OTR >tunes from dedicated Rhinelanders. I hadn't heard of her before, but I suspect that Sarah Fimm is a pseudonym, and a wonderfully evocative one. - -- |> ~The only thing that is not art is inattention~ --- Marcel Duchamp <| | jzitt@metatronpress.com http://www.metatronpress.com/jzitt | | Latest CD: Jerusaklyn http://www.mp3.com/josephzitt | | Comma: Voices of New Music Silence: the John Cage Discussion List | ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 15 Aug 2001 21:45:16 -0700 From: "Lord Tyr" Subject: Re: Sarah Fimm Well so far I've heard the 3 songs @ mp3.com & I want to buy the CD :) lol...
