I've now got all three of the successor oeuvres to the last OP (plus the three originals.) Mary Fahl's is easily the best. Marina Belica's is polite and the November Project EP no better, but Mary's stands a head above. There's some rustling on the intermittent November Project list about reuniting OP, which makes more sense than the principals identify, but that probably won't happen. Too bad. Mary's career appears to be the only one that has any prospects without the others. I wish her well, and would happily support her by buying any new release. I listen to them all. Madonna 's backup singer Donna De Lory is doing a set at the House of Blues in Cambridge tonight (rescheduled from Tuesday because of Madonna's show change), and Madonna is reportedly very supportive of her hand-picked and strictly drilled troops, so add it up and make your own call. But don't just go for a celebrity sighting. We hear De Lory and company play ethereal art-rock in the Peter Gabriel / Kate Bush realm. Yeah, I heard that too, but I didn't see a hint of either of those folks when I saw her several years ago. I think they were using the same press pack that the above comments were written off of too, cause the hype was pretty much the same. It was an ok show, but nothing exceptional. neal np: 60 Horses in my Herd: Old Songs and Tunes of Tuva - Huun-Huur-Tu ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 6 Aug 2001 12:28:21 -0700 (PDT) From: Ellen Rawson Subject: Re: Mary Fahl Tour Dates, Cara Dillon - --- rich.rapp@effem.com wrote: > Neal had said: > <<<< BTW, they recently redid Mary's web page, so it > actually has some > information and looks quite nice. I hope to be in that area (my entire family, including my cats live nearby -- can't afford the quarantine in the UK yet to bring the cats over) the week of so after. Drats. Regarding Cara Dillon, I'm in love with her CD. It's disappointingly short (45 minutes), but her voice is incredibly sweet while not being cloying. The piano arrangements on these traditional songs are quite lovely also. She reminds me a little of Kate Rusby and Bill Jones. Apparently, she's performing some original material in her live show, but this album is all traditional material. I was in London to see Richard Thompson the night after Dillon's show there -- just missed it. The Guardian gave it 4/5 stars -- big rave. A different reviewer gave Thompson's show from that same night (he played two nights) 3/5. Of course, I'm not so sure about that reviewer since he went on at length about hating the fact that Thompson's songs can be so bitter. Yeah, that's Richard Thompson. Deal with it. Thompson apparently played a different setlist the second night, based on what I read in that review. Also, the review says nothing about Christine Collister, so I assume the reviewer left early, or Christine wasn't there for that show. Thompson introduced her during the encore; they sang four songs together (including a nice duet on "Wall of Death"). She is in incredibly good voice. It made me regret missing her spring tour even more... I must pick up her latest album one of these days. Ellen, heading off to Cropedy later in the week. ===== "Literature stops in 1100. Does anyone know if that is Kevin B. playing bass, Happy R., or someone else? Ive never heard of Happy playing the bass, but wouldn't put it past her. I think I hear Kevin playing the guitar (E bow and lead), so, since she just thanks him and some other people in the liner notes, that may be the extent of the info she wanted to give about the extra musicians. I especially like the bass on Would That I Could. The bass sounds dry and plectrum-picked and the leaps between the notes get wide at times. There seems to be some Yes influence going on there. I spent the weekend at my hometown in Oklahoma. This is what I saw: A blood-red moon, a large dust devil that jumped over my car, sagebrush, rolling hills, the Red River, and the pink magic of the Wichita Mountains standing lonely on the prairie. By the time I got there and back I was thinking of forming a hair band and covering Rush, Styx, Boston, ZZ Top, Toto, ad infinitum. The only radio station out in the boonies (aside from bad country and western stations) is a classic rock station. I enjoyed listening to songs from my youth. Especially when the dj played The Cowboy Song by Thin Lizzy. Did anyone do twin guitars as well as Lizzy (okay, the Allman Brothers)? I think its time we set up the Happy Forever Foundation. Its mission will be to supply the world with a perpetual line of Happys through cloning. We should probably get Happy II started soon so a little one on one teaching can come into play. Happy could oversee her replacement, teach her to hit the high notes, share her creative process. There will have to be an administrator of the fund, so someone will have to supply genetic material to make Administrator II. I recommend a woman, since I think women are probably capable of maintaining a thousand year friendship. I dont know how we will guarantee that all the Happys of the future will want to be musicians. May have to be written into a contract, with perpetual life as the reward. I suppose matters will be easier when a computer-brain interface is created and we can record and upload memories from Happy to Happy. Hey, does that mean we can plug diverse life experiences into our brains of the future? That might keep the Happys and Administrators from getting bored over the millennia. Its dangerous for me to sit for more than an hour in car. My brain tends to drift off into odd territory. Bye, Lyle n.p. Karrin Allyson, _From Paris to Rio_. The cd is half French cabaret songs and half Brazilian sambas. Very nice. Allyson has excellent French pronunciation and (I reckon) good Portugeuse. She has a wonderful, warm alto voice and complete control of that warm voice. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 6 Aug 2001 23:25:36 -0500 From: "Dan Knoff" Subject: Cowboy Junkies Greatest Hits......please don't buy it Here is a message from the Cowboy Junkies (from their website) about the "new" album that is coming out this month. We have absolutely nothing to do with this release. We have not been consulted about any details, from the track selection to the artwork, and were not even given the courtesy of a phone call to let us know that this release was being scheduled. This release is a huge insult to us and we ask that if you are a fan of the band that you please don't buy it. All of the tracks on this compilation are available on our other studio releases, which are available through the Junk Store. If you must have these specific tracks in this specific order then: find them on the Internet, download them for free and burn them on to a CD....you have our blessing." I think that I now own all of her albums (that I am aware of). The first, a french-issue eponymous album, is a bit "poppish" and immature. But her second, _carpe diem_, my absolute favorite, is excellent; very happy at times, and very technically impressive at times; the a-capella passage in "Je suis malade" just blows my barn doors away. Her third album, _Pure_, I found good, but not an improvement on _carpe diem_. Her last, the english-issue eponymous album (not to be confused with the first album), is also good, but she gets a little bit too close for comfort to the Celine Dion she is always compared to; I hope she can reverse that trend and get back to the very happy, very authentic sound of _carpe diem_. If you'd like to have one of her albums, and you don't mind staying away from her "break into the english-american market" sound, I highly recommend _carpe diem_. - - Bill G. np: David Gray - _The EP's 92-94_ On Sat, 04 Aug 2001 14:18:12 -0400, dave wrote: >I recently went to see 'Final Fantasy - The Spirits Within' and the song >played over the closing credits caught my ear.. beautiful vocals. >I stayed till the end of the song, after everyone else had left the >theatre..
