Note: the 'OLG' the writer refers to is 'our lovely girl', which is a nickname for Julia. Also, the latest message from Atlantic re-sets the release date for Jan '02, instead of Sept '01. I keep reading gushy reviews of Centromatics CDs and performances, so I thought I had better check the band out. I had an idea what to expect because I have a couple of the bands early 45s, which were performed one-man-band style by the bands leader, Will Johnson. What I was not ready for was the volume of the band. I kept feeling my ears for trickles of blood, but never detected any. I had lime green earplugs in my pocket, but lacked the nerve to pop them into my ears. I guess I need discrete little pink earplugs. I have this image of the year 2020, when former twenty-year-olds all over America are hollering at each other and saying What? I had mixed feelings about the band. Their biggest fault was that every song sounded the same. I dont have the vocabulary to describe todays bands, havent kept up with them, dont really understand what holds their music together the way I understand how jazzers and blues guys and folkies hold their music together. I suppose power pop is the best term to describe Centromatic. If the band used acoustic guitars and told the drummer to cool it, their songs would be quirky pop songs. But because they use a driving eighth note strum (to my nearly bleeding ears, anyway) on the rhythm guitar, eighth notes on the bass, and distortion and nearly howled vocals, they move beyond the territory of popsters into the rock popsters category. Centromatic sounded like the Rolling Stones on some songs, and like grunge rockers on others. They played a couple of waltzes rather quietly, during which I thought of the Cowboys Junkies (minus Margo). The band occasionally threw in enough la la las to make me think of British pop. The best times of the evening were when the band stopped playing and let Will J. strum and sing alone. The sound system wasnt good enough to let me hear the lyrics, but a few words floated out now and then. But the melodies were mournful, with sad swoops, and Will sang in a thinnish Rod Stewart voice (or a Jimmy LaFave voice)-- hoarse, strained, but still melodic. The band did a couple of Chinese fire drills so that the bass player could play keyboards or violin. The lead/noodling guitar player picked up the bass when the real bass player took up another instrument. The drummer was powerful and helped to keep the songs from sounding completely the same. I did have two (or three) transcendental moments during the evening. I dont know if it was the tension of standing against a wall for two hours, the heat, or the high decibels, but a couple of times the chord progression the band was playing or the drum beat took me into that point where I thought to myself, How perfect this music is at this time. Have I been spoiled by CDs and bluegrass jams? I expect shifts in tempo, different styles, and different instrumentation to keep songs from sounding the same and am perplexed when bands dont do that. I suppose a band has to choose between musical diversity and a signature sound. Centromatic certainly has an identifiable sound. I suppose Im going to have to pick up some CDs so I can hear what is on Will Johnsons mind. There are Centromatic mp3s out there if you want to hear what the band sounds like.
