Cara Dillon was the original leader singer with Oige and then joined Equation before going solo. At the end of the day, a cover is a cover. I realise now this will be the first Tori album I will not be getting, unless perhaps second-hand... I've been a Tori fan since the Little Earthquakes days so this is a sad moment for me in a way, but that's how it goes.... ho-hum... - ---------------------------------------------------- 'Those who would give up liberty in the interest of security deserve, and will have, neither.' --Benjamin Franklin - ---------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 20 Jul 2001 22:07:04 -0600 From: Neal Copperman Subject: Re: NPR - Tori Amos At 1:34 PM +1000 7/21/01, Andrew Fries wrote: > At the end of the day, a cover is a cover. Wow, I'm surprised to hear that. Seems to me there are all sorts of quality levels of covers. Some seem rote, while others are strong re-interpreatations fo songs. I don't know that Tori's album will be brilliant, though I have always relished her covers. Some have been breathtaking. But I thoroughly enjoy albums like Jennifer Warnes' Famous Blue Raincoat and Holly Cole's Temptation. I like the work of people like Maura O'Connell and June Tabor, who I think are fine interpretive singers who do interesting things with other people's songs. If an artist can bring new meaning or emotion to a song, or make you listen to a song freshly, I don't see that as some sort of lesser, mediocre effort. neal np: Meathook single - Hannah Fury (which, amusingly enough, has covers of The Metro by Berlin, The Winner Takes It All by Abba, and True Love Will Find You In The End [cover of song I don't think I know]) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 20 Jul 2001 22:40:53 -0500 From: Joseph Zitt Subject: Re: NPR - Tori Amos On Sat, Jul 21, 2001 at 01:34:19PM +1000, Andrew Fries wrote: > I downloaded that track and I'm afraid my reaction was basically > "ho-hum..." which pretty much describes my reaction to the whole album. > At the end of the day, a cover is a cover. Curiously, I've been more interested in Tori's covers than her originals in her most recent work, so this is the album I've been most interested in in a while. At the end of the day, a song is a song. - -- |> ~The only thing that is not art is inattention~ --- Marcel Duchamp <| | jzitt@metatronpress.com http://www.metatronpress.com/jzitt | | Latest CD: Jerusaklyn http://www.mp3.com/josephzitt | | Comma: Voices of New Music Silence: the John Cage Discussion List | ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V7 #203 **************************
