Apparently the page is done, but I figure I should at least make some public comments on the disc to justify my getting it :) In case you missed all previous comments, Basque are a duo consisting of vocalist Maryasque and bass player Brandt. They are located out of NY, and you can find more info and sound samples at http://basquemusic.com I always think I should like ethereal music more. After all, I love the Cocteau Twins, DCD and Lisa Girard. But much of the ethereal music I hear seems to lack melody and structure, and generally lives under so much reverb that it just becomes muddy and uninteresting. While there is reverb on Falling Forward, the music is sharp and clear. Maryasque's vocals cut through the mix, which tends toward simple and uncluttered, while still providing an atmospheric base (or maybe bass). And there are even some actual songs here! The title track, Falling Forward, gels the most solidly, and for me is the strongest moment on the album. It sounds like a desperate plea of resignation, not so much a prayer but a release of responsibility (if anyone is responsible). ("God in this world I'm out of my head I leave it to you") The repetition for minutes only adds intensity and power (the track is 7:09 minutes long). The rest of the album doesn't strike me with the same power, but it's still moody and compelling stuff. The album clocks in at slightly more than 30 minutes. This often seems to bother people, but it seems perfect to me. It's short enough that I'm left wanting more, but not so short that I'm unsatisfied. And more might unbalance what is there. Somehow, I'm obliquely reminded of Hugo Largo's Drum, an album that is less than 30 minutes long, but perfect. (Drum and their second album Mettle can easily fit on one disc, but somehow don't work nearly so well when combined that way.) neal np: Courage My Love - Annie Gallup ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 08 Jul 2001 22:58:41 -0400 From: "JoAnn Whetsell" Subject: Re: Basque the page is done, i'm not sure if it's up yet. but since i don't have the latest basque album, the album info is not on the page, so that would be a good thing to send to neile. unless neile put it in, because i think she has the 3rd album. This weekend I bought a CD by Karrin Allyson. The title is _Ballads_ and it is a tribute to a John Coltrane album titled _Ballads_. Allyson has taken the song listing from the Coltrane album and sung all the songs he played on the original. She also adds three songs that are associated with Coltrane (Naima, Why Was I Born, Everytime We Say Goodbye). The other songs include: Say It (Over and Over Again), Too Young to Go Steady, What's New, Nancy (With the Laughing Face). I never heard of this woman until May, when the local college station, KNTU, started playing this album. They have played at least three of songs off the album. Apparently Allyson has been around for a decade. She has a lovely alto voice (but she can hit what seem to be really high notes). The remarkable thing about her is her vocal control. It's hard to believe what she is doing with a fairly small voice. She has this little break in her voice that really gets you. Since she doesn't sound that way all the time, I have to conclude she is putting that jagged edge in there by design. Her schedule had her playing at the Kuumbwa a couple of weeks ago. Apparently she makes it to the west coast some (she lives in NYC). I suspect seeing her in person would be quite rewarding. I'll plug KNTU and then end my fawning over Ms. Allyson. If you want to hear good jazz, try KNTU's streaming audio. Since I'm too lazy to look the website up for you, you'll have to search using KNTU. My knowledge of jazz has been rapidly expanding since I started listening to KNTU. I had stopped listening to them for five or ten years because they played nothing but big band music. Now they throw in big band stuff some but it is mostly small combo music. They love to play swinging sixties funky stuff, organ combos, guitar players. And, KNTU is the only place I can hear rock without having to put up with (no offense) Dave Matthews, Korn, and anyone else who appears on the cover of the Rolling Stone. On Sunday, right now, from 10 to 12 PM, Central time, a guy named Russell Liday is given leeway to play whatever he wants. He has been playing Apples in Stereo, Weezer, weird Japanese groups, Nick Cave, Lift to Experience, Centromatic, Magala, Mogwai, Belle and Sebastian, Tindersticks, Webb Brothers, etc. Just ignore the overwrought public service announcements. Okay,Bye, Lyle _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 8 Jul 2001 21:08:33 -0700 From: "Lord Tyr" Subject: Question... My first exposure to them would have been seeing them opening for Heather Nova at the "old" 9:30 club in Washington in the company of some other ectophiles, but I believe we were running late at dinner that night and missed their set. Fortunately, I had a number of other opportunities later on, including seeing them open for Neil Young (Jewel was also on the bill!) and headlining at the Fillmore in San Francisco. BFF broke up a couple years ago, but Ben Folds has been working on a solo album. It was originally supposed to have been released this summer, though I suspect it's been pushed back. - --Sue ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V7 #191 **************************
