Subject: Worth checking out? --- Peppercorn There was a highly interesting review in Friday's "Guardian" for the debut by someone called Peppercorn -- all the right references are there (although sometimes not , and because I'm so crap at posting links, I thought I'd reproduce the entire thing. So, here goes: "Peppercorn - "Free Love" (Arista/BMG) 5/5 [That's five stars out of five, their scoring system - ak] At first glance - that earth-mother name and wholesale absence of dress sense - - Peppercorn appears destined for the wearisomely kooky joss-stick market alongside Macy Gray, Erykah Badu and Tori Amos. But first glances often mislead. From London via the western Sahara, incorporating myriad delicious influences - from Brutal's Alanis Morissette-style sweeping chorus to the complex but conversational Ani Di Franco-isms of Bowing to Convention, which pinches the Hard to Handle riff - Peppercorn has arrived in breathtaking fashion. She has extraordinarily clear diction, flitting from rueful on the Bob Marley-esque break-up song, I Care, to swearily angry on Nice to You, which mentions both Madonna and Richard Branson. Moreover, all 12 self-written songs wield a burgeoning musical and literary intelligence while still managing to be both anthemic and moving. Peppercorn's invention is fearless and peerless. her brilliance is in the detail: uplifting strings on Brutal and the heartstoppingly beautiful Karma, a choir on Sweet One, beguiling African backing vocals on Destiny, the use of the phrase "stark bollock naked" on Bowing to Convention, and the sheer breathlessness of Hyperventilating. Marvellous, truly." Interesting, eh? 5 stars out of 5, by the way, is an exceptional score, and not one they hand out lightly. This is definitely one I'll be keeping my eye out for. adamk np - "What Now" - Peter Hammill ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 07 Jul 2001 19:18:12 -0400 From: meredith Subject: FW: Music Festival with Dreambeach Hi, Info from Pipa Pinon's outfit Dreambeach, for those of you in EFW-land... >>>> From: "Pipa" Subject: Music Festival with Dreambeach Date: Sat, 7 Jul 2001 16:06:58 -0700 Hi Everyone! It's been a busy spring and summer so far for Dreambeach. How about you? Hope your summer is going well. Some good news: 'Angels Cry' has been chosen to be the musical back drop for a video/public service announcement for the Kids Cancer Connection. If you'd like to check out this wonderful organization go to www.kidscancerconnection.com This 1 minute and 20 second video will soon be shown on Oprah's Oxygen Network. Also, we will be putting it up on our website soon www.dreambeach.net 2 big shows that Dreambeach is producing are coming up on the horizon. The first one is: TROPIC OF DREAMS FESTIVAL August 11th at The Henry Miller Library in Big Sur from 5 pm to midnight. featuring: Bill Walker and his giutar looping magic, Dreambeach, the bass/voice duo Imam Lizarazu, world class juggler Cyaokha Grace and her band from San Francisco. ( we just did 2 concerts with them recently and really dug their sound! Cyoakha is very talented and alot of fun! Kind of a Nina Hagen meets Kate Bush and Dead Can Dance. At least that's our twist on it) Dreambeach, the band, with guest artists Bob Burnett on synth guitar, George Demarest on Trumpet, Bill Walker on ambient guitar, and Jim Norris on drums will be playing songs from the latest CD, 'Making Friends with Gravity'. Closing the show will be D.J. TIM STEELE from the Blue Lagoon in Santa Cruz, will be offering up a mix of dance beats for us all to dance under the stars and redwoods of Big Sur. Once it gets dark, Viviogragher, DAVID TRISTRAM, who toured with Herbie Hancock, Grateful Dead, Morphine etc. will be projecting visuals on a large screen to blow your mind. The setting is on a green lawn under the redwoods and stars of Big Sur. There will be chairs privided, but you might want to bring a blanket if you want to lay out on the lawn. There will be concessions of food and drink. We recommend Car pooling fort this event. The Henry Miller Library is just 1/4 mile south of Nepethe on Highway one. This Festival is $15 at the gate. Children 12 years and under are admitted free. For more info you can email us and we'll answer you right back. The Second big show is at The Kuumbwa Jazz Center, October 20th. We will fill you in on that show as it gets closer. This will be the last show of the year as we are going to take time off and record our duet CD. Thank you for checking out this long email.
