First up was the California EAR Unit. They are a 5-piece modern music ensemble (think Kronos with different instruments). They were pretty good, but not as striking as Kronos or the Tin Hat Trio, who blew me away earlier in the year. And they were billed as using turntables, but that turned out to only be on one song. Still, it was interesting watching the percussionist carefully counting bars before deliberately dropping the needle and unleashing some odd noises, then going back to counting again. Since Joe always wants to know, they played Spit - Nicholas Francis Chase Cendres - Kaija Saariaho Rhythm Sextet - Jamie Allen Road Movies - John Adams Go - James Sellars Foreign Objects - John Bergamo The last three songs were the best in the set. The next day was my wilderness driving adventure, prompted by the excuse to drive out to Grants to see Erica Wheeler again. She played a very nice house concert with us last weekend, and I thought it would be fun to see her again. Her music had really been growing on me, and I was ready for another dose. It was a sadly underattended show. (I feel somewhat proud that our house concert had more people and netted more money than her 2 other NM appearances combined, but it's a sad commentary on music opportunities here.) Erica took it pretty well, and made a point of figuring out who everyone in the audience was. She did a lot of the same songs as at the house concert, mixing up originals with some really tasty covers. I think she's a really fine songwriter, so I'm surprised at how much I like her covers too. She added Wayfairing Stranger and Rosedale Fair to her set, which were both excellent. The next night I saw Faith & Disease. It was my first time at Pulse, one of the primary gay clubs in town. There was no info in the papers or on their answering machine, so I drove down at a bit before 9. Security told me doors at 9, show at 10, but they didn't open up until 9:45. They did turn on their sign though, which gave me enough light to read by. Oddly enough, I managed to read about 1/3 or Light by Eva Figes, the totally inappropriate tale of a day in Monet's life, while hanging out with goths in and outside of a dark club. F&D were pretty good. They didn't strike me as being too far afield from a lot of other Projekt stuff I've heard. But I've never seen any of those bands live. Everything they touched was drenched in reverb, giving it a fuzzy indistinctness. Should I be more or less impressed when a pair of singers harmonize well under an ocean of reverb? They did have nice voices, and I couldn't understand a thing they said (except when they sang a song about dead children). The thing I liked best about them was the prominant use of flute. Even reverbed flute gave the arrangements a somewhat unique sound. They played for about 50 minutes, then the lights in the club came on. They said, "Oh, I guess we're done." The announcer said "Let's give a hand for Faith & Disease. They came all the way here from Seattle, so show your appreciation. Now leave. We've got to close. Buy CD's first, then leave, quickly." Very odd. Since they were selling CD's for a whopping $10, I picked up the latest one. Still haven't listened though. neal np: my radio station audition tape (finally! All Nordic music I've traded with Juha and Anna Maria for. Not clear the powers that be at KUNM will be impressed by that, but it was fun.) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 26 Jun 2001 12:03:16 -0400 From: "Connell, Michael P" Subject: Belize it or not, you best get your CDs vaccinated Does your Smash Mouth CD look like it's got Gingivitis? Your Barenaked Ladies CD look like it rolled around in Poison Ivy? If so, have you been near Belize with your CD collection recently? I found this lil' tidbit in the USA Today today: A Fungus Among Us - on CDs Before you blame your dog for chewing on your CD collection the next time you can't play one, check the edges. Scientists in Spain have identified a new form of fungus that eats compact disks, reports the BBC. But if you haven't been traveling to a tropical area, chances are your songs are still safe. A geologist at the Museum Of Natural History in Madrid discovered the fungus( which belongs to the common Geotrichium family) on CDs brought back from the Central American state of Belize, the BBC says. The fungus attacks the outer edges of CDs, eating plastic and even aluminum. I think one of the most effective ways in which we could assist Happy is to help promote her music to the world in general ( as I said, this is not likely to be a breathtakingly new concept!) I think that the concept of assisting HR with donations and house concerts, etc., is typical of the kind of community we share here in Ectopia, and it's really wonderful to see so many posts from people willing to help out. Here's my $.02 Happy is in the business of music; she has an established business which, like all businesses, can benefit from increased product sales. I believe this is where the efforts put forward by Ectos could be of the greatest help. HappyCo makes some of the finest products on the planet, and it's very easy to sell or pitch something that one genuinely believes in. Happy asked recently for assistance regarding radio station contacts ( she mentioned at the Kuumbwa that she is working on a new CD). The reason for the request most likely reflects a desire to do a media campaign when the album is ready for release. Radio airplay stimulates CD sales, and has the potential for reaching a large potential fan base. So find the Dj's on your local stations who are the most likely to appreciate HR's work and contact them: tell them that you listen to their station nonstop 24/7 ( yes, lie! It's for a good cause)and that you'd like to hear LOTS of Happy Rhodes played on their station. Ask all your friends to do the same. I once got my own band an interview years ago in the UK by handing out the number of the local station to everyone who attended the gig, and asking them to call in and request our band. We didn't even have an album to sell, but about 70 people called in to specific radio shows over the weekend and created a buzz that got their attention. If the people you contact express an interest, but have no HR CDs in their library, contact the Auntie with as much info as you can gather. Or send them one of your CDs, I did this with Cy's Ordinary Magic ( although she gave me a replacement later! Thanks, Cy) Point them to the web page for MP3 samples, call 'em back, stroke and pet them ( figuratively speaking, of course!) I'm inclined to believe that on (at least) every college station, there will be someone spinning sounds who has never heard of Happy Rhodes and who will be delighted to discover ( and air) her work. Airtime always pays off for the artist. DJ's are sometimes quite accessible, via phone or email, and will respond to calls and messages quite promptly. I have spoken with more than a few who are very serious music fans and always looking to broaden their musical horizons. Just about every radio station does phone interviews as standard SOP these days, and the interview normally includes an airing of some of the artist's work, be it music, poetry or book excerpt. I have found the local college stations to be some of the most accessible, I spoke with a few folk at KSJS in San Jose to try and promote the Wendy Rule/Cyoakha concert at the Espresso Garden, and sent them promos from both divas. They always responded to my emails or phone calls within 24 hours. I believe Cy got a radio interview from that contact, She would have to confirm that, as there was a lot of stuff going on at the time and I lost track of things after I turned the info over to Cy. I'm speaking out of church here, of course, but I would hope that the Church of Auntie would not be adverse to list members acting as Her unpaid 'evangelists', providing we don't start going door-to-door with bicycles and a stack of Terra Incognita back-issues. I would be very willing to regularly assist in helping coordinate some of these efforts to get Happy on the local airwaves, shipping out promo packs, harrassing DJs and station managers, etc. I also frequently broadcast HR in mono to my immediate neighbourhood via 'Micro Radio' - in this case, a Nigel-like contraption consisting of an old guitar wireless transmitter with an FM frequency ( with a range of about 1000 feet) connected to a portable CD player Hey, it's a start! Best wishes to all those generous Ectos out there offering ideas on how to help out. The people on this list never fail to amaze and impress me. It starts at 8 with a folk singer, then another group, then Fontain's Muse, a good middle-eastern, rock band fronted by Fontain, a wonderful singer and I will join her and jam on her last song. Then I will perform a very short set (maybe three songs with a stripped down version of what I did with 6 folks at Ectofest, down to just 3)..then there is some african drumming master to play and later a huge jam. Should be quite a fun night....Ashkenaz is the famous 60s freedom club on San Pablo in Berkeley, near the corner of Gilman (Exit Gilman off 80 either direction and go east, you will see the wooden club from the corner of Gilman and San Pablo) I'd love to see you and say hello. The concerts to help her sound like a good idea. One quick note on music. I mentioned a Denton band called Lift to Experience a while back. I finally heard them on the college radio station Sunday night. They sound good. Won't be surprised if they do well in England. The lead guy's voice verges on pretty. Add multilayered guitars (courtesy of the singer), a Smiths feel in the melody, and the strange Pentecostal lyrics, and LTE comes across as an intriguing band. Bye, Lyle n.p. Richard D.
