I didn't join ecto until the list was nearly a year old, but finding other people who are passionate about the music they listen to has been a constant delight, and ecto has been a large part of my life since I joined it. I've met wonderful ectophiles from all over the world and made some friendships that has enriched my life unbelievably, and discovered music that has made me feel nearly every emotion possible. I'm sorry I'm so overtired or I'd be a little more eloquent about this about how so many individuals here have made this a wonderful collective, but I thank you everyone for your contributions to making ecto what it was, what it is and what it will be. Hi, Glenn, and all-- Yes, we've discussed them. I think perhaps Dirk Kastens was the first person to mention them I found _instinct_ a little too sweet for me, but adore _empathy_. Here's what I said to ecto about them (not so useful, but here it is): about _empathy_: Another ectronica disc, but this is more mellow than most in that area. Really lovely vocals and good songwriting. For me it was definitely worth paying the price to import it. Mandalay, instinct I loved Mandalay's _empathy_, which seemed to me a lovely gentle pop twist on ethereal music and trip hop. But this has gone just a little too gentle and a little too pop for me. It's amazing how when you go in that direction there isn't much to distinguish this from the pop-ized rhythm and blues that dominates MTV and all. No Guy Stigsworth on this album--maybe that's what made the difference with the first. Only a couple of songs seem to me to get beyond the surface prettiness and approach the depths of the first album: "simple things" and "what if i". http://www.mandalay.co.uk - --Neile - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Neile Graham ...... http://www.sff.net/people/neile ....... neile@sff.net Les Semaines: A Weekly Journal . http://www.sff.net/people/neile/semaines The Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music ....... http://www.smoe.org/ectoguide ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 18 Jun 2001 23:27:29 -0700 From: Neile Graham Subject: Mary Lydia Ryan news For those interested. Hi, Well, I've just come in to work and read all these messages about Ecto's 10th. I think it's appropriate to reflect on what the list meant to me. The first time I heard about ecto was probably through my fried Marion. She was the one who introduced me to the Internet phenomenon in 1994, and it all seemed so weird to me, a worldwide network where you could exchange information about anything and everything... Very weird. In 1994, I also got to know about Happy Rhodes. Must have been because of ecto and Marion, but my memory is distinctly hazy about this. I only know the surprise of finding her cd in a store in Amsterdam, listening to "Rhodesongs" ("Feed the fire") there, and almost immediately buying the cd (I was flat broke so I had to wait for a long week...) I've been a member of ecto since 1995, and have always done this at work. I do have an internet account at home, one that is heavily used, but I always felt that ecto was a nice diversion of often boring work days. I did have a spell of turning more 'alternative' in the mid-90's, but nowadays I've turned all poppy again, listening to artists that are usually deemed too mainstream for ectophiles. I'm still a big fan of Happy though and the only place where I can keep up to date on her is this mailing list. So that's my primary object of concern here, although I'm always on the lookout for certain threads I may find interesting at some point. Through the years Marion and I have met a few ectophiles in real life, and it's always been a pleasurable experience. I still hope Jeff hasn't gotten nightmares from my house... ;-) The only person I haven't seen in real life is Happy, and I hope some day she will travel to Europe, do some gigs here and leave the audiences amazed. One nice celebration of Ecto is the Dectopia CD and I must say a public thankyou to Foghorn for making this possible. I know I was supposed to be contributing or - in the very early days of this concept - even hosting it, but I'm glad I didn't. Various reasons would have helped in making it something that wouldn't have turned out so well as it did now. I feel humble in the presence of all these great minds in this virtual world. :-) Party on, ecto! Kind regards, Marcel Rijs afd. This news came hot from the the mailing list I put myself on, care of his website --- it arrived yesterday, too late to make arrangements. A visit to the site itself brings you, among other things, a "news" section, that is about a week out of date. It is one of those Flash-heavy (i guess that's the term) sites that looks and sounds great....but doesn't actually tell you anything. Meanwhile, Witness, another great UK band, have a website at www.witness.uk.com that tells you it will be going live "this weekend". It's been saying that for three weeks. In the past, an attempt to track down quirky US band Lotion led me to their website, which hadn't been updated for about two years, and contained a dead e-mail address. There may be good reasons, but with more people using the net to seek out bands (which, after all, led us here)it all seems rather counter-productive -- anyone else have any "favourite" websites? adamk np -- Matthew Jay/Draw Get your own zoom email - click here - http://www.zoom.co.uk/ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 19 Jun 2001 08:46:07 -0700 From: Troy J Shadbolt Subject: a trip down "the lane" (was happy birthday ecto) hello ecto. (and i still have the d^2 cassette of his music in my car.) * how many of us were at the last dead can dance concert in berkeley? * twenty ectophiles sitting en masse attending loreena mckennitt's performance at the palace of fine arts in support of _the mask and the mirror_. * ectofest west. need i say anything more? being a geek, i was easily able to compile the ecto-introduced artists in my collection. all purchased based on the reviews presented on this list: heidi berry, edie carey, toni childs, danielle dax, mary fahl, teddy goldstein, anne o'meara heaton, veda hille, land of the blind, loreena mckennitt, the moon seven times, october project, sam shaber, jane siberry, sylvia tosun, sloan wainwright. and of course, happy rhodes. ecto has evolved from an artist specific list into something much more, that we all should be proud of. troy shadbolt - -- "I am the boards and the rusted nails, holding up this nation" - - Katharine Chase ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 19 Jun 2001 13:28:25 -0400 From: "Varker, Patrick" Subject: What would I do ??? without my daily ecto I'd truly be lost !!! Philip David was kind enough to post about my gig in Bay Shore last week, but I wanted to post a small reminder... When last you may or may not have seen me was when I accidentally brought a rock band to a folk festival in Kenosia Park last year for Ectofest :p Have since learned my lesson... Unfortunately I know I didn't do great that day (many reasons I won't get into now) but have healed, of course, and that show isn't indicitive at all of where I am right now musically. Basically after that gig and one other that didn't go so great in Sept., I took a long long time off from playing (nearly a year) and locked myself in my bedroom and listened to songs and rediscovered albums and practiced my piano and guitar and wrote and wrote and wrote... A lot. Some good, some really not good :D. Anyway, I have learned a lot and experienced a lot (marriage, illness, family stuff) over the past year, and feel it has helped me grow as a budding artist and performer... My new material is inspired and could perhaps be compared to the likes of "Ecto-ish" artists like Sarah Slean, Jonatha Brooke, and maybe a little UK Brit rock like Radiohead/Coldplay, etc... I'll be recording my album in Pennsylvania this fall with the help of folk/rock band the Badlees at their studio in the hills :) Anyway! The point of this email is to invite any of you in the area out to the show this weekend. Should be a good one. I am playing solo, and although I won't be able to unveil all of my new material just yet (some songs still need a line or two, a chorus, whatever), I will play a few new songs and some old that a certain Ectophile has requested. :) The details: Saturday June 23rd Bayshore (Long Island), NY 8:00 pm opening for folk/rock band Nylon & Steel Unitarian Universalist Society 28 Brentwood Road (between Montauk Hwy and Union Blvd) Hope to see you there. For those who may not know, RAINN was founded by Tori Amos, and she is currently the chair of their advisory board. Serendipitously, RAINN is trying to put together a series of "Happy Birthday, Tori" events across the country during the week of Tori's 38th birthday, August 22, with the goal of raising $100,000 to keep the hotline going strong. Once we heard about this and the timing of it, the opportunity was just too good to pass up. We're aiming to be the Big Event for the Connecticut area. The Big Events hope to attract 400 people and raise up to $5000. We think we have a really good shot at achieving that goal (weather permitting ... oy :}). To maximize our chances of doing this, we want to have our operating expenses accounted for up front, before the first ticket is sold. To that end, we are trying something new this year: ectofest sponsorships. We are looking for as many people as possible to donate $100 to the ectofest operating fund (from which the artists will be paid, flyers will be printed, t-shirts will be made up, insurance will be secured for the park, etc.). Everyone who does this will get two free tickets, a free t-shirt, and their name prominently displayed in the event program. We are also looking for a few Major Sponsors, to donate up to $500. Major Sponsors will get two free tickets, a free t-shirt, and a full-page ad in the event program. All sponsors will, of course, get our undying love and gratitude. And maybe a few other goodies too, as we think of them. :) If you'd like to be a sponsor, please contact me and/or Chuck Stipak (cjmacs@snet.net). If you know you can't attend but would like to be a sponsor anyway, we welcome your help. We'll find something cool to replace the two tickets in that case. So that's the story as it stands now -- stay tuned for updates as soon as we have them. Eeek ? Sheesh. I for one like folk influenced music and see a lot of the music that falls into the ecto spectrum as being very folk influenced. There is nothing wrong with folk music be it "folk rock" or folk or folk-punk, whatever. Sorry I just had to react. It wasn't an "eek" to the idea of folk at Ectofest, since I listen to some folk-oriented stuff too. It was the idea that Ectofest is a folk festival, which often tends to mean an only folk festival, which Ectofest ain't.
