I've been on the list from the beginning too (though our phone was turned off when Jessica started the list...bad timing huh?... she added my name and I was still able to participate via long-lost friends. I haven't been a very good Ectophile for a very long time, but the list will always be part of me. When Chris and I got online in the fall of 1989, I'd been a Happy Rhodes fan for about a year and a half. She only had 4 cassettes then, and whenever anyone would order them, Happy would dub from the masters, then put together the cassettes using a typewriter, a photocopy machine, photographs of her paintings, scissors and glue. I lost track long ago of how many of those cassettes I bought and gave away, but I'd always hope they'd be as cherished as they deserved to be. Not just for personal way they were put together, but, of course, for the music contained within. Six albums later, and those songs are still astonishing in their beauty and power. And she just keeps getting better and better. Happy is an amazing person, personally and professionally. I don't know why her genius has gone undiscovered for so long. It's sad and depressing sometimes, to be a Happy Rhodes fan. But mostly, it's wonderful, when I know there are others out there who appreciate her too, and when I listen to the music, her timeless, brilliant music. Thanks to those Kate Bush fans who took a chance on Happy (starting with Mike Mendelson and Larry Hernandez and Jeffy-With-The-Long- Black-Hair) and who talked about her enough to intrigue other Kate fans, and thanks to Jessica Koeppel who gave birth to Ecto(plasm!) when things started getting a bit too heated in Love-Hounds/rec.music.gaffa, and thanks to those who came along and stuck around. For those interested, the new Muse album, "Origin of Symmetry" is now out, and has recieved a right kicking from three out of the four reviews I've read (Time Out, the Guardian, the Metro). They were the critic's darlings last year, but seem to have overplayed their hand a bit. The three bad reviews were not just bad, but downright savage, whereas the one not-so-bad one (yesterday's Observer) said it was ludicrous and overwrought but fun. But I did feel the need to post a great big thank you to the organizers, lest they think me ungrateful for their hard work. The show was a smashing success and well worth my trip to the left coast. THANKS! A note like this wouldn't be complete without a special nod to the incredible dedication Happy showed in her performance, despite the throbbing in her finger. While I hope to write more about the show, I must at least comment on the fact that her set was by far my boyfriend's favorite of the evening, and his main comment afterword was about his amazement in watching Happy do Those Things with That Voice. Sheer magic. Finally, a nod to Dectopia, which I was just listening to this morning. I've commented here, ever since the release of _Equipoise_ that I've never really liked the original "Temporary and Eternal." It wasn't until the release of _The Keep_ that I came to love the song -- that version is haunting. Well, what can I say, but props to Phil Hudson. I honestly believe that his cover of the song on _Dectopia_ can be considered the definitive reading of the song. Thank you, Phil, for your beautiful work on this track. Happy raised the bar with her later versions, but you have truly achieved new heights that will be difficult to overcome. The whole disc is wonderful, but that track alone makes it worth the price... jeff n.p. _Rhodes I_. Okay, since nobody else has mentioned this, I will venture out of my lurker shell (it takes a lot for me to believe I know *anything* about music that most ectophiles didn't learn a long time ago)... If you really enjoyed the bass player with Pipa Pinon (as I also did), you are most likely also (know it or not) a huge Mick Karn fan. You know, the talented guy who provided the unique bass sound for Japan (that band David Sylvian used to be in), backed Gary Numan for some excellent tracks, and even got together with Peter Murphy (formerly of Bauhaus) back in 1984 for one album as "Dalis Car". I actually went up to Pipa's bass player (I'm sorry I'm spacing his name!) after their set at Phil's houseconcert (THANK YOU PHIL!) and flat out asked him if he was a Mick Karn fan, and he said Yes, very much so, and was actually surprised to find I knew who Karn is, which at the time only told me that he didn't know much about ectophiles, who collectively know pretty much everything about music. Anyhow, the point is that he was playing very much in the style of Karn. For those of you wondering which of the attendees I was, I was the tall fat female with long hair in the front center row for EFW (right behind Cy's harmonium), and the one on the corner of the sofa at the house concert. And, most notably for those who were within earshot, the one who asked Veda Hille a question about... her brassiere. (And yes, I got an answer.) Ten years. Amazing. Technically, I haven't been on ecto since the very beginning, since in June of 1991 I was out of the country with no net access -- but woj kept me apprised of the events leading up to the list's creation in his letters to me, and I joined up the day I got back to civilization, when the list was only a couple months old. Close enough for guvmint work, as they say. ;) I'm probably not going to be very coherent, but I feel a need to post something about what this list has meant, not just to me but to the world of music in general, over the past decade. When you stop to think about it, it's really quite an amazing thing. The list has changed over the years, as all things will ... the tangents are fewer and farther between, and the possibility of flameage has increased, but that's what will happen when a list has spanned the relatively geologic amount of time on the Net that this one has. It's a testament to the uniqueness of ecto that it has survived so long, and so relatively intact from its beginnings. The signal-to-noise ratio here remains one of the highest on the entire Net, and flamefests are still a blessed rarity. In ten years, ecto has progressed from a defiant forum for Happy Rhodes fans to an adjective to describe good, (mostly) female-fronted music. ecto, and by extension The Ectophiles' Guide To Good Music (since after it is our posts that provide the Guide with its content) are quite possibly the best places on the entire Net to find out about new music. We have always been, and continue to be a group of people who actively seek out new important voices in music. Because we ectophiles have always had our ears to the underground, so to speak, we've managed to find out about new artists years before the rest of the world. Here's just one example: on February 28, 1995, the day Jewel's _Pieces of You_ was released, when WFUV's Rita Houston introduced "Who Will Save Your Souls" to New York City for the first time by saying "here's an artist who people on the Internet have really been talking up lately", she was talking about us. Neal Copperman and Jeff Hanson and the others in San Diego who first posted about this wonderful girl named Jewel Kilcher who had been playing in the coffee shops downtown were quite possibly the first people to mention Jewel's name in the world at large. Think what you want about what happened next -- that's still a remarkable thing for a list to have in its history. More and more, when you mention "ecto" to an independent musician, you'll get a knowing smile -- and there's always a chance that musician will turn out to be a lurker, if not then, then later on, when they realize what a resource this group can be. Ectophiles, by their support of independent musicians have proven invaluable to the careers of several artists, starting of course with Happy. Just off the top of my head I can list Veda Hille, Susan Court, Kristeen Young, Mary Lydia Ryan, Emily Bezar, Rachael Sage, Mila Drumke, and Susan McKeown as people who have gotten support from this list, ranging from a sudden and noticeable spike in CD orders following a post here, to shows where the only people in the audience were ectophiles, to having gigs set up in a town they normally wouldn't have been able to get to, or getting radio play in a new area because a programmer has been paying attention to our archives. There are many, many more. Heck- just look at Wendy Rule's trip to the States just now, which basically wouldn't have happened without the support of ectophiles across the continent. It was so successful and she had such a good time, that she's already planning to come back next year. Then there are the peripherals that have cropped up out of ecto: smoe.org, which hosts dozens of mailing lists devoted to independent musicians, and hosts web sites for artists in addition to the Ectophiles' Guide; the other mailing lists started by ectophiles, from jewel-list to curiouser to trajectory to precious-things (just to name a very few); and of course the ectofest events, which hopefully will remain an annual tradition for years to come. Other, personal connections have been made too, either on the list or on an offshoot of it (I know of at least one marriage that came out of the old #ecto channel on IRC). With almost no exception, every ectophile I have ever met in person has turned out to be as cool as one would expect based on their impeccable musical taste. :) I have made friendships here that I know are going to last a lifetime, and have had experiences at shows and gatherings associated with this list that I will remember forever. So thanks to Vickie, for introducing the old guard to Happy's music way back when ... and to Jessica for starting the list ... and to Greg for keeping it going ... and to woj for taking it over to the present day ... and to JeffW for providing it with a home at smoe ... and to Neile and Damon and everyone else who have contributed so many hours to make the Ectophiles' Guide what it is ... and to all the brilliant people out there who make such beautiful music for us to burble over, not least Happy ... and to every single ectophile, from the dozens of daily posters to the hundreds of lurkers that have been subscribed over the years, who have made this mailing list fuzzy and blue for the past decade. 10, 20, or even 30 years down the line, I hope to be able to post a similar message: happy birthday, ecto! ======================================= Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille ======================================= Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://www.smoe.org/meth/muzak.html ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 18 Jun 2001 22:24:01 -0400 From: "glenn mcdonald" Subject: Mandalay Have we discussed this band before, and I just wasn't paying attention? I only have their first UK album, _Empathy_. But from what I can tell from the track listings, _Solace_ is a compilation of songs from both _Empathy_ and their new UK CD, _Instinct_. I must admit I only like about half of _Empathy_, but "All My Sins," the one song I absolutely adore from that album, apparently didn't make it on to _Solace_. So, I would recommend _Empathy_ just for that one song. Every time I hear it, I think it sounds like what Tori would record if she were a trip-hop/electronica artist.
