Then I watch the original version with English subtitles (if available) and finally I see it without subtitles. I really love DVDs. It's the first time that I can hear the original voices of the actors. Meanwhile I learned how poorly dubbed some of the films are and I don't want to miss the original voices of Julia Roberts or Robert de Niro, for example. Another great feature of DVDs are the audio comments of the directors or the "making of"s. You can learn a lot about making movies and about the intention of the directors, authors and actors. The UU Society is on 28 Brentwood Road in Bay Shore; you might try contacting N&S co-founder David Bartow at bartow2000@earthlink.net or calling his colleague Jim Frazzitta at 1-631-368-1920 for travel directions. Be prepared to part on the shoulder of Brentwood Road - one thing the UU/SSS could use is sufficient parking (you'll see why when you get there - just watch for the band's own signs & banners when you get close to the place). The reason why Jessica's tourdates page says the show is free is because it's Nylon & Steel's gift to all their fans who've stayed loyal since 1997... I wish they had their own homepage up so I could point you in their direction...also the band's first CD is in the can... After sleeping a good portion of yesterday and last night, I am attempting to re-enter the 'real world'. I think I can safely say that I am not the same person I was on Thursday. I was so grateful to everyone who came and introduced themselves, I hope another ectophile can report on the evening, I think that I am unequipped. I received many, many thanks Saturday night and I want to thank the other people who contributed. Thank you to my husband Michael, for believing in me, for co-financing this event and for participating in every aspect of the production. Michael was the man with the beard and glasses at the door. Also the man who kept things running smoothly for the artists and the crew. Long after I slumped in a comatose stupor, Michael was still moving. Michael isn't on the list, so if you would like to thank him personally, please e-mail him at michael@cybermagician.com. Thank you to Phil Hudson. I don't even want to contemplate how the evening would have gone without Phil. Phil handled all the ins and outs of sound and acted as our MC. He also coordinated with the artists about equipment and gear. I can only sit and wonder at Phil's continued 'cool'. Thank you so much Phil.. Thank you to Cyoakha Grace. Cyoakha was responsible for the press release that got us 'Pick of the Week' in the local entertainment paper. Cyoakha also did a lot of radio to promote EFW. Without Cyoakha, we would not have had a sold out show. Thank you Cyoakha for saving my butt!! Thank you to Bill Mazur. Bill and Phil were part of the early process and helped to bounce ideas and formulate the evening. Bill was a financial backer for the show. Thanks to him, we will still be able to pay our mortgage this month (grin). Bill also provided a lot of equipment at the last minute for the artists. Thank you thank you thank you!! Thank you to all the performers. Cyoakha, Jill, Veda and Happy. Thank you for doing this. Thank you for being so wonderful. We were VERY sorry to hear that Two Loons for Tea were stuck in Texas. Please send your thoughts and love (and acquaint yourself with their incredible music). Thank you to Happy. In case anyone missed it, Happy performed with a major hand injury. Please send your love and support to her. Thank you ectophiles. YOU made this happen. Wow, I have to say I have not seen the movie Magnolia, but regardless of the film, the soundtrack is brilliant. Amy Mann is an amazing songwriter. I recommend you listen to the soundtrack again, as well as her album Bachelor No. 2. I wasn't immediately drawn in to Bachelor, but once I was... it was on constant play in my stereo. Her songwriting is tight and perfectly formulaic. To write lyrics like her is something to strive for. - Mark ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 11 Jun 2001 14:14:46 -0400 From: "Foghorn J Fornorn" Subject: Order the Ecto 10th Anniversary CD The Ecto 10th Anniversary CD, colloquially referred to as Dectopia, is now available. I thought it was beautiful. I know it's not heavy on the poetic side (maybe it is, I didn't catch all the lyrics), but I think it has the potential to really strike a cord with the masses and media types. It surely did with me. With good production, it could be Happy's break-out song. I would miss not being able to see her at a 100 seat house, but I also would be happy for Happy to obtain more commercial success and allow her to reach a broader audience. And wouldn't it be a great emotional reward to stick-it-to Sampson Music and other past impatient doubters? It's like what Happy said during the show... 'you reach a certain age and then realize you want what everyone else wants, a home, a family'.... and of course love. It's one of those base emotions everyone can relate to - and although I can't remember all the words... something about everywhere you go, I'll go... I'm also a big Chris Isaak and Aimee Mann fan, so I ate this up. This was my first time seeing Happy live. From the first uttered words of 'Collective Heart' I thought to myself... wow...is that gorgeous sound (really) coming out of her mouth? :) I thought the keyboard playback of her sampled voice as background vocals worked very well too. Drums and guitar were also very tight. Thank you Happy for being a trooper and going through with the show given your injury. I can now say: She's so good, she can play a gig with one hand tied behind her back ;) Do come back soon! I'd pay for the new CD in advance just to get a pre-release (live bootleg?) copy of that love song in MP3. hint, hint... it might be a good PR play for the new CD, Happy :) Thanks also to the people for putting the EFW show together, it was a real treat. - -Brad- ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 11 Jun 2001 19:53:07 -0400 From: Philip David Morgan Subject: Jane Siberry - video and MP3 re-releases Good Evening, Ectofolk: The latest for Jane Siberry fans.... Also big thanks to Phil Hudson and Bill Mazur and everyone else who had a part in it. Thanks to Phil and his partner J'Te for opening their incredible home up for the day after house concert too. It was a real treat. Don't think I'll ever forget the experience of sitting around a bonfire in a redwood grove listening to Wendy Rule sing and tell stories. It was great seeing so many ectophiles and meeting some new ones. Thanks again to everyone who made it such a great event. And yes, I loved Happy's new songs--her love song, The Chosen One song, loved them all. Despite her injury she put on an incredible show. And Veda simply kicked ass. Man was she awesome on piano. Cyakhoa rocked too! As did Jill Tracy, and itwas great to see Wendy open the event with a ritual. I agree, it sounds like it could be a hit to me. It was my favorite of the new songs she played. I thought perhaps we wouldn't get so much of Happy's trademark dry wit on Saturday night due to her injury, but she was in fine form. What a total professional -- if she was having an off night (and who could blame her), it didn't show. The audience rewarded her with well deserved standing ovations. Here's hoping her injury heals quickly. I think my fave moment of the fest, though, was Veda's encore of the beautiful "Tuktoyaktuk Hymn" from her new CD FIELD STUDY. I hadn't yet bought the disc (figuring that buying it at the fest would be easier than mail ordering it from Canada), so I was unfamiliar with the tune. It was such a powerful and touching moment -- Veda was wiping away tears when she finished. Unforgettable. THANKS to the folks who organized the fest. (I tried posting a thank you immediately after getting home, but I guess it got lost in the ether.) You did a splendid job, and considering the heaps of CDs that were sold, I hope you got a cut of the merchandise sales ;) It was a roaring success, and I sincerely hope we can do it again someday! - --Sue Trowbridge np: Veda Hille, FIELD STUDY ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 11 Jun 2001 21:19:50 -0400 From: meredith Subject: EFW Hi, Greetings from San Francisco, where after five days in the redwoods in a place with no phones, I have never been so glad to see an Ethernet port in my life. :) (Sad, isn't it?)
