Sounds like you convinced yourself you liked it since you started that paragraph :) I don't have anything by her, but I saw her perform a month or so ago, and left with pretty much the same feelings. (I don't have anything by Ferron either, though I have also seen her live, and the comparison seems vaguely apt. Except Eliza won me over, and I left uninterested in Ferron.) I didn't realize she had been making music for so long, and it seems that she has gone through a number of phases in her music. I was surprised at the edge to what she was doing (which I gather has not always been there). She had a good self-effacing sense of humour, and struck me as a sort of folkier Lucinda Williams. I've toyed with picking up the latest album since the show, and t was good to see what someone around here thought of it. neal now shuffling over: Selections from Shadow Behind the Iron Sun/Battle Cry mixes - Evelyn Glennie The View From Here - Suzanne Buirgy Saddle the Bridge - Bonfire Madigan You Were Meant For Me (promo single) - Jewel sonic (single) - leonardo's bride ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 25 May 2001 11:06:58 -0400 From: /dev/woj Subject: old mwabt reviews stumbled across these reviews of many worlds are born tonight on cdnow.com. i don't remember if these were posted already or not, but what the heck! woj - ----- Happy Rhodes' Many Worlds Are Born Tonight could be the background track for The Mists of Avalon. This music incites visions of deer running through medieval forests; the fear and uneasiness of their stampede. You'll hear the trickle of magic ponds and the unstill silence of mid-morning birds. Happy Rhodes brings to life the mysterious underside of Celtic myth and King Arthur's legend: the fate of mismatched lovers, the power of nature, and the omniscience of Merlin. In short, it's hippy-dippy-trippy, man, and really cool. It can most likely be classified as "Electronica-Light," but that's not a complete description. Happy, also the producer, makes use of electronic effects, but the result is not emotionally alienating like most Electronica - perhaps because of her four-octave voice and the spiritual content of her songs. So for a mystical, ethereal journey to past worlds which still lurk within, put on Many Worlds Are Born Tonight. You will be transported. ) 1999 Viacom International Inc. All Rights Reserved. - ----- Although this is Rhodes's first nationally-distributed album, Many Worlds is the ninth full-length release by this chanteuse with the amazing four-octave range. Sounding a bit like Kate Bush in her high end, but with an equally full low range to match, Ms. Rhodes's compositions are atmospheric, electronic delights. ) 1978-1999 College Media, Inc. Is anyone out there familiar with a band called Sons of the Never Wrong? I saw a review of their new album in the Washington Post while I was back east a week or so ago, and it made me curious. They have a web site (http://www.sons.com), which also makes me curiuos, but currently no sound samples. The Post review said something like... Some time ago, the Roches first album defined a whole new musical approach. For a long time, it seemed like that style was merely the Roches, but later the Nields ran with it, and now the Sons of the Never Wrong are playing with that same approach too, making it appear that it might be a genre, rather than just a band. Anyway, anyone know them? neal np: The Music of Your Life - ZuZu's Petals (anyone know of them either? I don't know why I bought this album. It seems I thought someone somewhere once said something good about them, or something good about someone who has a name that sounds like them, or that someone should have, as ZuZu's Petals seems like the name of a band that people on ecto would like. I have no idea, obviously. But I really like this 1994 Twin Tone release, which reminds me a lot of Scrawl, which is always a good thing. It sounds like other fairly straightforward rock bands too, but that's the only one I can seem to put my finger on.) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 25 May 2001 15:04:30 -0400 From: Jeff Wasilko Subject: Re: More Katell Keineg dates (Boston) On Thu, May 24, 2001 at 10:09:20AM -0400, Sam wrote: > Hi there, > Wanted to let East-Coast Katell Keineg fans know that she'll be performing > at the Tin Angel in Philadelphia on May 31, and the Druid in Boston on June > 7. I'm not sure I've ever found that one, but I like their first, _When No One's Looking_, quite a bit. Main creative talent Laurie Lindeen has had a very low key solo career since (despite the occasional involvement of Paul Westerberg). Hmm, I'll have to look for that. I found a nice history of the band at http://www.unm.edu/~rocks/zuzus.htm The amusing part of this is that I live about 4 blocks from UNM. This page is part of a women in rock music project that might be of interest to some. I don't think I'll dig through it, but it looks quite nicely done. The page implies that The Music of Your Life is the better of the two albums. Most of you know that I write music reviews on the side. Well, Projekt Records used one of the blurbs that I placed on the Internet of a band called Rajna to promote the US release of their cd. First, the blurb was used in a print ad -- cool enough. When I went to a record store to browse, I saw the cd in the bins. I casually turned the cd around and my credited review was on the back of the compact disc! I had no idea that they were going to do that.
