Pravatiner" Subject: Back in production Old-timers on this list may remember the days when I had a great imagination for Ecto product and services--the likes of EAU DE DREARS designer fragrances, the WRENCHES GONE AWRY chain of tool repair shops, and a host of others, down to and including that mother of all luxury passenger trains, the WRONG CENTURY LIMITED. In recent years I have largely let this continuing endeavor fall through the cracks, but recent events have fired up my imagination again. The current issue of _Time_ magazine has a story on the emergent trend of tribute musicals WRT famous rock artists: _Love, Janis_ for Janis Joplin, _Eli's Comin'_ for Laura Nyro, and of course _Mamma Mia_ for ABBA. Perhaps it is time for the great Ecto industrial machine, and start beating the bushes for investors for the Happy Rhodes tribute musical... COBWEBS, COBWEBS (Any associations evoked with the musicalization of the movie _The Apartment_, "Promises, Promises," are purely accidentally on purpose :-). ) Which, in turn, reminded me of something that popped into my head well over a year ago, after I had acquired Happy's latest album to date, _viz._, the MANY WELTS ARE BORN TONIGHT chain of franchised S & M salons :-). Mitch ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 23 May 2001 22:54:54 -0600 From: Neal Copperman Subject: Mary Fahl review Well, sorry no one else made it to the Mary Fahl show, as you missed a pretty spectacular evening. Eleni Kelakos did a half hour opening set (after almost being struck by lightning on the way in... ok, there was at least a quarter second between the lightning and the thunder, but it was still pretty dramatic). Eleni did a house concert here about 2 months ago, and was mighty surprised to see me pop up in Arlington. i didn't think her set was quite as good as the two shows I saw when she was here, but it was still nice to see her again. And she played a snippet of a new song during sound check. Mary Fahl was backed by a five-piece band, consisting of keyboards, drums, bass, electric guitar and a female backup singer who also played acoustic guitar and additional keyboards. I'd seen October Project twice before, but somehow all I managed to retain from that experience was the recollection that I was amazed at how accurately they managed to recreate the lush live sound of their albums. Well, what I will remember from this show was that Mary Fahl is a magnificent and riveting performer. Definitely leaning towards the flamboyant side, but perfectly in line with the range and sound of her voice. The band was both rockier and jazzier than OP, and the variety of music was sometimes surprising. Fantastic covers included Tom Waits' Strange Weather, something by Judy Collins, a 14th Century Moorish song (in Arabic!), and 3 recorded and 1 unrecorded October Project songs. I had heard the 4-song preview disc for Lenses of Contact (their upcoming album) in passing, and hadn't been that impressed, but some of those songs were more impressive live, and the whole feel of the evening blew away that EP. I picked it up anyway, and a quick listen at my folks house didn't change my opinions. Maybe it will grow on me though. Anyway, I highly recommend people see them if they get the chance. This is their first tour, and it's just a short one up and down the east coast. Apparently the OP breakup was not a very friendly one, and Mary doesn't have access to the mailing list, so they are having a hard time reconnecting with their fan base. But I think OP fans would definitely be happy with any chance to see Mary singing again. BTW, for DC area folks, the other voice of OP (Marina Belica) will also be at Iota on June 10. neal np: saddle the bridge - bonfire madigan nr: old Brill's Content ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 23 May 2001 23:13:16 -0500 From: Joseph Zitt Subject: Re: Mary Fahl review On Wed, May 23, 2001 at 10:54:54PM -0600, Neal Copperman wrote: > Well, sorry no one else made it to the Mary Fahl show, as you missed > a pretty spectacular evening.
