After their last studio album (10,000 Miles From Home), they said that it had a very different sound for them. I had to disagree - while there was a richer instrumentation, songs like Blue Guitar were the very embodiment of their first gems, such as their interpretations of State Trooper, Sweet Jane (the Studio version), Misguided Angel, etc. Open, however, really does have an entirely new sound for them. The first track (i did it all for you), for example, is haunting in a much more literal sense than their previous work. I am still digesting the album, so I will get back with more thoughts on it later. np: Open - Cowboy Junkies (Surprise!) nr: Skinwalkers - Tony Hillerman ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 May 2001 03:00:06 -0400 (EDT) From: Mike Matthews Subject: Today's your birthday, friend... i*i*i*i*i*i i*i*i*i*i*i *************** *****HAPPY********* **************BIRTHDAY********* *************************************************** *************************************************************************** ******************* Lisa Laane (Laane@cs.stanford.edu) ******************** *************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- - -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Lisa Laane Tue May 22 1973 Gemini Jewel Kilcher Thu May 23 1974 The Gem Chandra Sriram Thu May 27 1971 Gemini Urs Stafford Thu May 31 1973 Give Way Perttu Yli-Krekola Thu June 02 1966 Kaksoset Alex Gibbs Thu June 08 1967 Betelgeuse Gleb Zverev Tue June 09 1964 Gemini Sonja Juchniewich Mon June 10 1963 Pegasus Joerg Plate Mon June 12 1967 Gemini Chris Montville Tue June 13 1978 Gemini Ectoplasm (original name) Mailing List Thu June 13 1991 Fuzzier blue Paul Huesman Wed June 14 1967 coffee drinker Mark R. Hurrah! Veda Hille/Field Study: Veda was one of my important discoveries for last year, so I was eager to hear what direction she was going to take next. Although more in the mode of "Here is a Picture", "Field Study" is not so much a step back or even a step to one side, it's more of an extended ramble, combination chamber piece and lesson in natural history, in rehearsal. It's a digression, it's a doodle, a fragile folio of rough notes and pencil sketches. It's wonderful, in a dimminuendo kind of way. Jonatha Brooke/A Steady Pull: A good, punchy, rocky release from our Jonatha, coming on as if Prince was loose in the studio. While I miss her softer, acoustic side (doesn't she know there's a "Movement" on?) songs like "How Deep is Your Love?" have me bouncing across the room in arythmatic joy. Not sure about that cover, though --- it looks like a Spice Girl solo album. Guided by Voices/Isolation Drills: Thought I'd give them a go, having heard so much about them. What I hear, in the end, is this: riffa-riffa-riffa, chunka-chunka-chunka, riffa-riffa-riffa, warble-warble-warble, insert post- modern "ironic" lyrics, riffa-riffa-riffa, chunka-chunka- chunka. Great packaging, though. Over the Rhine/Films for Radio: This is a grower, a real beauty, and I can see myself listening to it for good time to come, and finding more and more to like about it. Eliza Gilkyson/Hard Times in Babylon: Not exactly my kind of stuff, a bit too country for my tastes, but some wonderful songs on here, and she has a distinctive voice, reminding me -- at times --- of Ferron. Regular curveballs up the joy factor, including the bizarre guitar breaks of "Engineer Bill" and the half spoken, half sung "Flatline", which is truly haunting. Highly recommended for people into Emmylou Harris, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Lucinda Williams, etc, and recommended for ectos on the basis that it's really very good. Okay. Only another five more cd's to get through. Re: Sarah's Dido Cover In this case, I wouldn't jump to conclusions. First off the actual news piece seemed more like gossip than good hard reporting. Secondly, to me at least, It seems that Dido may be the one who's acting a bit diva-ish. Sometimes the singers aren't actually the ones who own the rights to the songs--the record company is--and they probably are the ones who gave Sarah the rights to cover it--they may have been the ones who never actually asked Dido. Unfortunately that part of the story rarely makes it to the press. Personally, if someone of Sarah's stature and reputation wanted to cover my song, and I was going to earn royalties from it and gain exposure to people who would probably not otherwise have heard of me, I don't think I'd be complaining too much--even if I wasn't particularly thrilled with the version. I know that Sarah Brightman is fairly persistent in getting what she wants. She begged Enicio Morricone for years before he finally gave in and let her write lyrics to a song he composed for The Mission soundtrack. He was ultimately pleased with the result. But she bugged him regularly every 3 months for a few years before he finally consented. The important thing is she did get the approval before she released the song. I doubt Sarah would just go cover an album without getting proper authority from the copyright owner. It's not like Sarah Brightman is some unknown with minimal distribution and that nobody is every going to figure out that she's covering your song. Also, I have to applaud Sarah for covering such a wide range of material and giving people like Dido exposure. She picks the material she likes--regardless of whether it is approved by the classical world, whether it is from a classical piece, a pop song or an Italian aria. She's often ridiculed within the classical world for not being a "serious" soprano, or for not having the best soprano voice, but she sounds great to me and like Holly Cole, she seems to be a true artist in her ability to pick a wide range of material to cover and putting her own unique spin on it--whether you like that or not--it is all definitely infused with her personality and artistry. (OK, I admit, I'm a fan. In fact, I just watched her Eden DVD again this weekend--she really has an amazing and unearthly voice). Maybe I just misheard the name of the artist. Anyway, I really liked the song and really want to get my hands on the CD. To insert something useful into this missive: put the name Molly Zenobia onto the radar. Ofer gave me a copy of her CD this weekend, and I was finally able to give it a listen today. I checked out Molly Zenobia's website; it does have a regular HTML section, but I have a hispeed connect at work so I got the Flash version. (I'd hate to have to wait for the downloads if I was on a dial-up.) The Flash website version lives up to its brand name, with some very slick graphics and photo-animations. It was a little too 'serious' for my personal taste, with rather too many careful poses and artsie-shots. There is an interesting series of photographs of Molly waist-deep in water frolicking with a partially submerged electric organ, which, outside of doing the backstroke, didn't look like it was having much fun, or ever would again, unless perhaps someone had chosen to plug it in at that exact moment :) On reflection, I thought that this might well represent the more gentle and feminine version of the cliche of male-rockstar guitar-smashing. I didn't get much of a chance to listen to her tracks ( busy day!), her voice seems quite distinctive, and Meth's Fiona Apple and Paula Cole references ring true, the overall production sounded a little muddy and overwrought, but it's hard to say with these nasty little sony Walkman phones I use at work, compressed audio files, and the guys in the office next door apparently baiting rabid badgers with 2x4s. The site looked very nice, exceptionally professional and rich, with some good photography and design.
