Kathryn Williams "Little Black Numbers"- wonderful, minimalist (a little like tamara williamson but not really...)...three tracks through listening it at the record store I can tell it will be on my top ten list at the end of the year :) Also, Shea Seger's album "the may street project" is getting a bit of buzz over there and is quite nice...somewhere between Sarah Harmer and Michelle Lewis...nice diversity of songs (i think it is set for us release june-ish) - -Jason n.p. This is the "Karin lets her hair down" tour, literally and figuratively; the band seemed a lot looser last night. I wholeheartedly agree. I brought two friends who had never heard (of) OTR before, and they both enjoyed it quite a bit (though the late hour tempered the enthusiasm of one of the friends -- the show didn't end until around 12:30 am). Just a quick word about the Willard Grant Conspiracy, if they're opening one of the shows you're planning to attend: they are BORING. Don't rush to make it to the venue in time to see them. ======================================= Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille ======================================= Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://www.smoe.org/meth/muzak.html ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 20 May 2001 13:16:00 -0400 From: "glenn mcdonald" Subject: Re: Over the Rhine @ Bowery Ballroom > Just a quick word about the Willard Grant Conspiracy, if they're opening > one of the shows you're planning to attend: they are BORING. I got to see them do an in-store appearance at Other Music in Cambridge the day _Everything's Fine_ came out, just playing in a space cleared away in the corner of the room without even a vocal microphone, and it was probably one of the dozen most spell-binding performances I've ever seen. I've never seen them in a rock venue, and I can readily believe they might easily get swallowed up, but if you have a chance to see them in an intimate setting, I encourage you to show up that extra half-an-hour early after all. glenn ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 20 May 2001 19:08:49 -0400 From: "JoAnn Whetsell" Subject: Re: New obsession Melissa is great, especially live. I just rediscovered her album "Freedom" last night, which I didn't like much at all when I first listened to it, but I think is good although it still needs some growing time. I highly recommend you run out and grab "Everything I Need" and her first live album, "Melissa Ferrick + 1." Keep on Moving: The Best of Angelique Kidjo, a compilation from her past 5 albums, released on Sony/Columbia May 15. Check out her ectoguide page or her website, http://www.kidjo.com For those unfamiliar with her, Angelique is an incredible singer from Benin, a small country in West Africa, who sings in English, French, and her native languages of Fon and Yoruba. (I think there's a 5th language she sings in too, but I can't remember). Her music infuses traditional African music with the musical styles of the African diaspora. She's amazing in concert. From her website: As a teenager, Kidjo was inspired to write songs by the sounds of Hendrix, Santana, Miriam Makeba, James Brown, Fela Kuti, the Beatles, and Aretha Franklin; before her twentieth birthday she was one of Benin's few professional female vocalists. Difficulties with the political environment in her homeland prompted Kidjo to reloate to Paris. Thriving in the city's African music underground, she progressed from singer of Jasper Van Hof's fusion band Pili Pili, to leader of her own band within five years. Established as one of Paris's top live acts, Kidjo was quickly discovered by Chris Blackwell and signed to Mango. Today, Angelique Kidjo is a bonafide phenomenon whose performances are always legendary events. Her style of music varies from afro-funk, reggae, samba, salsa, gospel, jazz, zairean rumba, souk and makossa which combined together creates her soulful unique sound of music. "Most of all, this music makes me feel closer to wht has been my main influence: the traditional music from my country Benin and its region. Music is not only emotion and groove, it's something that speaks for a culture and its people. I hope that when you listen to this very diverse material, where the influence of many styles and other artists can be found, that you will hear a voice of the continent that I am so proud to come from: AFRICA." I hope some of you will check her out. Course, with the new Go-Go's release and the Cowboy Junkies albums also arriving in my 'new album rotation' within a matter of days, I haven't had a chance to get a feel for any of them yet. Though first pass at Cowboy Junkies' "Open" (since their 2 p.m. in store fan concert yesterday) is: edgier, more of Michael's guitar (what I call their 'surf rock guitar sound'), somewhat darker/contemplative lyrics than previous albums. It instead evokes a pensive feel. Alison's vocals are superb - she has an immense strength but she can do the breathy style equally well. It is the sort of music that you would enjoy listening to in dark, smoky, hip cafes. It is very rare that I like_every_ song on an album straight away, but this one I just went from song to song and wished that it wouldnt't end. Listen out for "Utopia" I think that this album is an outstanding debut and I cannot wait to hear more from them. That is my 5c. (Australia has got rid of our 1 and 2 c coins so that is our smallest denomination ;-) worth, anyway.
