There were better writers than Adams, many who were worse, but none quite like him, though a legion tried to be. His career was long enough and varied enough that I'll miss gobs of things he did, but what comes to mind are: he had a cameo on Monty Python as a pepper-pot, wrote at least a couple episodes of Dr Who, wrote the Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy, which was adapted to radio and television, another four books in that series of varying quality, a dictionary of invented words, a book on endangered species, two computer games, the absolutely brilliant Dirk Gently books (Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency, and The Long Dark Teatime of the Soul), magazine articles on topics that ranged to page layout on the Macintosh. His books set the tone, better or worse, for humor in science fiction for the past two two decades. James Mitchell Yahoo! I had the opportunity to meet him and see him read several times, and they were always memorable occasions. His renderings of several passages from Hitchhiker's Guide and his underappreciated "Last Chance To See" caused unrestrained hysteria in the audiences at these readings; I firmly believe Adams portrayed the voice of Marvin The Paranoid Android better than anyone else. He was a bright, funny man whose understanding of human-computer interaction extended far beyond that of many "programmers". His loss is painful and irreplaceable. - -- | Greg Dunn | I don't understand why anyone | | gregdunn@indy.net | would want to migrate to Windows | | The Sultan of Slack(tm) | NT - 'Migrate' is what sheep do. | | http://www.indy.net/~gregdunn/ | Usenet posting | ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 12 May 2001 00:54:49 EDT From: Songbird22@aol.com Subject: Emm and others in DC Emm Gryner will be playing the Metro Cafe several times in May and June. This Sunday opening for her is Brenda Weiler, an AMAZING talent from Minnesota. She's extremely good... www.brendaweiler.com or www.peppermintcds.com. I have all 3 of her albums and it's hard to even begin to choose a favorite. They're all full of powerful/intelligent/witty songs and I love her voice... Not unlike Ani Difranco/Patty Griffin in many ways, for those who need comparisons :) Cameron Dezen, a fellow NYC singer/songwriter is opening for Emm the last Sunday in May. She's got a new album out that is quite good...different, but really good. www.camerondezen.com In June Rebecca Lord of MTV fame will share the stage w/ Emm. Last seen on the Real World/Road Rules Challenge which wraps this week, she has a new album out and a new website (www.aboutrebecca.com) which is rarely updated... What I've heard of her album is just okay... Emm's got some great new songs so check her out! She's also playing the Kendall Cafe in Boston every Monday in May (just did a gig w/ her there last week which was fun!). Info about Emm's tour and other cool things (listening party for her new album) are up here: www.publicawareness.net Jess www.jessicaweiser.com - new album BECOMING available now! ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 12 May 2001 14:58:47 -0400 From: meredith Subject: Patti Smith in New Haven Hi, Thursday night, Patti Smith and her band played at Toad's Place here in New Haven. Oh, *my*. When I'm 50-something, I want to have even a tenth of the fire that woman has. (I probably don't have that much *now*. :}) Toad's Place pulled their usual crap, so even though the show was advertised to be doors at 7:30, show at 8:30, in reality doors were at 8:15, and the band came on stage at 10:05. So much for an early night. But as soon as the music started, all my crankiness from the hours of standing around evaporated. She did a set of songs spanning her entire career, surprisingly including her "hits", "Dancing Barefoot", "Because The Night", and "Gloria", which closed out the main set in truly rousing fashion. In addition to the paint-peeling rockers, she also did more introspective numbers featuring her poetry, which she read from a copy of one of her publications with granny glasses perched on her nose. And she didn't take any crap from the crowd, either -- at the start of "Gloria" she decided she'd had enough of the idiots in the front and gave them what-for, much to the glee of the packed house. Two other favorite moments occurred early on, when after the first song someone yelled "more vocal!" and she stepped out in front of the mic and yelled back, "how's this, motherf*ckers!!!", then later on she said regarding New Haven, "It's a very pretty town you have here. Don't f*ck it up." :) Nice to see she's not mellowing any in her old age. Musically, it was a very intense experience. I'd forgotten my earplugs so I'm sure I did some damage, but it was all so good, I don't care. It was great to have a chance to see someone that legendary play about 10 feet in front of me. She's doing scattered dates around the Northeast over the next month, including tomorrow (Sunday) at the Paradise in Boston and three nights at the Village Underground in NYC starting June 6. Anyone who gets the chance to see her should definitely do it. ======================================= Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille ======================================= Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://www.smoe.org/meth/muzak.html ------------------------------ Date: 12 May 2001 20:18:18 -0400 From: Dan Riley Subject: Re: Douglas Adams James mitchell writes: > I woke this morning to the news that Douglas Adams died yesterday of > a heart attack at the age of fourty nine. Happily, the scripts were published, and the radio show was available on tape from the BBC. > > two computer games, > > I never did finish either, but I loved the premise of Bureaucracy, > the goal of which was to get the Post Office to acknowledge a change > of address form (which also shows up as a recreational impossibility > in Hithchiker's Guide). I finished both games -- the Guide on my own, and Bureaucracy with a fellow college student who ties back nicely to things ecto -- Neal Stepp, who was the graphic designer doing visuals for My Scarlet Life. A year or so after I finished the Guide, Adams appeared on the local NPR station for an interview and taking calls from listners. I called in and asked if the hint at the very end of the game that there would be a sequel was true. He was quite amused, but apart from mentioning that he was working on a new game (which turned out to be Bureaucracy), he didn't answer me. My initial exposure to the Guide was in 1980 at a summer camp where our british cabin counselor would read to us from the book before we went to bed each night. It's been something of an obsession ever since, and just yesterday, at work, I happened to be describing a scene from one of the books to a co-worker.
