From the Programme: "Fugard4s new play is Sorrows and Rejoicings. It is described as exploring "the legacy of Apartheid on two women - one white, the other black - who on the surface seem to have little in common except their love of one man, a white poet attached to the Karoo land and peoples of his birth. The drama moves fluidly between the past and present, reliving his despondent years in exile and his eventual return to a new South Africa. With lyrical grace, Fugard once again demonstrates the human struggle to transcend the treacherous injustices of history". I have friends in low places, so I was able to infiltrate premire night and meet Athol, who may be the world's greatest living playwright. The play is on par with Valley Song and "The Road to Mecca" in it's intensity, sparceness of set and costume and wonderful use of character and diologue. (The Road to Mecca is being made into a feature film at the present) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 07 May 2001 11:11:01 -0700 From: Troy J Shadbolt Subject: a rockin' weekend of concerts (long) Okay, let me preface this by saying that I'm exhausted and sore; but this was probably one of the best music weekends I've ever had and I apologize for cross posting this to my two favorite lists that actually do have something in common- great music! Friday night started with the second anniversary of the San Francisco Songs show at the Dolores Park Cafe. Featured were the creator, Deborah Pardes, Katharine Chase, and the Velvet Janes. Deborah is one of my favorite live performers, and always puts on a great show. Even when Deborah thinks she's not "on" she give the listener a good wack upside the head and gets you thinking, and she can make her trusty Martin Shenandoah sing. I must say right now that Katharine Chase completely, utterly, irrevocabley floored me and then melted me into a puddle of goo. I've met Katharine a few times, but had never heard her sing until this night. She is one hell of a powerful alto and she can play the death out of her guitar (an old Alvarez mini-jumbo for those interested.) Her lyrics are full of insight, and presented with such aching emotion that you can't help but be stunned. Of course, I'm now digesting two of her CD's. The Velvet Janes were a real treat. All the way from Australia, they are an acoustic guitar duo with some great harmonies and lots of raw talent. The only comparison I can make is Indigo Girls, but as always, that's only a weak comparison. Martine Locke is most definitely THE guitar player of the two, and she plays her Takamine for all its worth. Rose Farrow mostly strummed along on her Takamine, and clanged along with a tamborine, but that's more than needed when she starts singing. These women have amazing voices and some damned impressive songs to highlight them. I'm looking forward to the fact that Martine has moved to San Francisco, so we'll get to hear much more from her! SF Songs is played in the round, so it was a ton of fun to watch each performer add their own touches of amazing harmonies, great guitar riffs and "wall of sound" to the others' songs. Then came Saturday, and the offical launch of the voyuz.net Music Amongst the Fallout house concerts. Local talent, Megan Slankard, opened. This young lady is not quite 18 and has already played well over 200 gigs! Her songwriting and musicianship are far beyond her years. I've seen Megan play a Taylor often, but this night belonged to her Guild. The feature of the night was the one and only Deborah Pardes (my knees are shaking, Deborah was in my house!) Along with her wonderful violinist Stephanie Lee, who also plays fretless bass (now a five string Lakland) they gave us an hour of Deborah's greatest songs. This was Deborah's third performance in a row, and she just let it fly and made herself twenty new fans with her songs. So after returning my house to normal, it was out again Sunday night. This time to the Sunday Night Music Club at the Voodoo Lounge in San Francisco. Here we got to hear a full hour of the Velvet Janes and did they rock! I now have two CD's to devour. Deborah Pardes and Stephanie did another hour set (yes, you counted correctly, that's four shows in a row for Deborah, and I was at three of them.) I'd like to make the excuse that Deborah left her CD merchandise at my house and I had to return it to her; but the truth is, I would have been there anyways. The night was closed by keyboard specialist Amy Meyers and her band. While entertaining, it was just too jazz for my tastes. So then, an hour drive back home and looking forward to Richard Shindell Thursday at the Freight & Salvage then Sam Shaber at voyuz.net on Friday! Just call me a glutton for punishment, but one happy guy. (and I couldn't have done any of this without the help of my friends John Clary & Meriann Chandler- you two rock!) troy voyuz.net presents Music Amongst the Fallout http://www.voyuz.net/concerts.html 04/01/01- John Clary 05/05/01- Deborah Pardes (with Megan Slankard) 05/11/01- Sam Shaber 06/25/01- Dave Carter & Tracy Grammer 07/14/01- Katharine Chase (tentative) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 7 May 2001 12:10:51 -0700 From: Phil Hudson Subject: Ecto-West 3 Divas House Concert update. The new and official pitch for the Boulder Creek house concert: The house concert gathers some serious momentum. The entire day is lined up with unique and exciting talent. The current line up: Wendy Rule Cyoakha Grace Pipa Pinon Piper Maru Phil Hudson/Bill Mazur Previously Lost Dogs Arbel & Janathon Other artists may still appear. The house concert will take place in Boulder Creek on Sunday June 10, after the Saturday EctoWest gig at the Kumbwa. We will start early afternoon, around 2:30 pm and play until 10pm. We might then continue with unamplified music for a while. The setting will be a beautiful garden bordered by two lovely Redwood groves just outside the town. The house and garden is also a Wiccan-Feri temple, both groves often being used for rituals. The large grove will be open to visitors, so you can wander around during the show and never be out of audible range. Our PA system will include auxilliary speakers around the property, and is better than those found in most small clubs; we also get a lovely natural reverb off the canyon. Our performers' backdrop will be a wall of trees 150 feet tall. Our roof will be made of sky, sometimes blue, with birds; sometimes black, with stars. No clouds will be admitted on the day of the concert. Ours being a very gentle and religiously tolerant culture, folks espousing other faiths should not feel in the least uncomfortable in such a setting. No one will be turned into a newt for any reason whatsoever. Besides, if you're coming to see Wendy Rule, you've probably got a pretty good idea that you're not about to enter a hotbed of rabid, athame-wielding satan worshippers. Admission, originally slated at $10 for the day, has been 'upgraded' to a $10 minimum donation: most folks just get an evening concert with one performer for $10, but we also recognize that many folks will be on a tight budget this weekend due to the proliferation of shows. Folks who can are encouraged to donate more to support the performers. CDs of all the performers will be available for sale throughout the event, and I'm also inquiring with AuntieSocial about getting a small selection of Happy Rhodes CDs to sell at the show. Outside of minimal expenses for the show, all the proceeds will go to the principal performers; folks like Arbel, Janathon, Lost Dogs and Bill Mazur and I will play for free, as we're all conveniently local to the gig. The house will provide paper plates, cups, ice, etc, guests should plan on bringing their own beverages, and a potluck dish, or some food to share. Any pagans attending will be very familiar with this concept, as it occurs frequently at rituals. Boulder Creek has three or four good delis, some attending to specific dietary needs or restrictions. We'll most likely be BBQ'ing somewhere in the afternoon. If you have camp chairs, it may help to toss them in the trunk with you, as we may run short. We have arranged some parking on a neighbor's property, but will most likely have to shuttle some folks in from town, five minutes away. This is one of the principal reasons I'm asking everyone intending to come to RSVP to me, so I can keep an eye on the problems arising from increased attendance. (The house is on a one lane road with limited passing/parking.) I can provide info on accomodations, etc., if you need assistance. There will be offroad parking if you have a van, or some kind of vehicle that you can sleep in. ( But I need to know in advance if you're bringing an RV!) There may still be some available space on the property to pitch a tent. We are hoping to get a really good turnout; the audience area will easily take 50-60 people, and the grounds in general can handle more. Please mark your calendars and/or let me know if you can make it. Please email me for more info or RSVP for directions if you plan on attending. looking forward to seeing as many of you as can make it. But we've got Wendy coming in early June, and we've finally got a date for Veda in October! And meth, we did follow up on Ruthie Foster, and she's going to be playing in August. People might remember an offer I made some months ago on Wendy Rule CD's. Well, I've got them in hand now, so it's a good time to order if you want them. And here's the real treat. Today a second box arrived, and it's chock full of Wendy's Live disc. This one is really hard to track down, and Wendy sent me all the ones she can find. So if anyone is interested in those, let me know. So, I've got copies of: Zero Deity Live World Between Worlds The discs are $15 a piece, plus $2 a disc for postage. We can probably work something out on postage if you get multiple discs. (It's just to cover my expenses on getting these out to people.) All prices and postage rates are in US dollars. We can work something out for overseas stuff if you can figure out how to get money to me. neal np: Anna Wolfe at Borders At 8:43 PM -0400 5/2/01, meredith wrote: >Hi, > >Announcing our next house concert: > >WENDY RULE >Sunday, May 20, 4:00 pm >Live at the House O'Muzak, New Haven, CT > >Wendy is embarking on her first-ever Northern Hemisphere tour, and we're >excited to offer her a place to play her very first show in New England! >Even if you've only heard her talked about on ecto, take the chance and >come on down to expand your musical horizons. We had enough problems with people pronouncing Sade's name as "Sharrrrrday"... :-) This message brought to you by SKEPTIC, the Society for the Knowledge, Eradication, Prevention, and Termination of Illusory Consonants. - -- |> ~The only thing that is not art is inattention~ --- Marcel Duchamp <| | jzitt@metatronpress.com http://www.metatronpress.com/jzitt | | Latest CD: Jerusaklyn http://www.mp3.com/josephzitt | | Comma: Voices of New Music Silence: the John Cage Discussion List | ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V7 #129 **************************
