Shortly after that, at a nearby street market, I found a copy (albeit with a different cover) going for a fiver, and swooped on it. I was later told by another NZ workmate (the place was full of them) that what I had gotten was an original NZ release, that had somehow found its way to a market stall in South London. Anyway, it's definitely ecto, and highly recommended to everyone out there, although I believe someone did mention it before. Adam K. I decided to check them out, www.mp3.com/tappingthevein, and I have fallen in love with them. They call themselves Goth Rock, but there's not a whole lot of Goth in it, it's just a little dark. The girl has an amazing voice, very sweet and strong, but man can she belt it out. The music is very well done, the lyrics are excellent ("this sucking wound is eating out my chest, I ache for you, I linger here at best"), and like I siad, I love them. I checked their official website for merch, and found they had only two EPs, and the earlier EP, a 5 song one, is out of stock. Does anyone have this? I'd really just like MP3s of the songs, so I can burn it to CD. Can anyone help me out? I saw them a few times in the last few years, twice at QXT in Newark. They certainly struck me as Goth Rock, but then again, Donnie Osmond would look Goth at QXT. Friends have told me they are popular elsewhere in the world, but around here they're paying their dues. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 3 May 2001 11:22:21 EDT From: Dracovixen@aol.com Subject: New Music For Me to Share I bought more CDs! Only two, but that's enough. :) And, I also have the reccomendation to check out Tapping the Vein! Anyway, I bought Kidneythieves and Suzanne Vega. Kidneythieves - Trickster I really really enjoy this band. Rock industrial oriented, the girl has a sweet voice, the beats are catchy, the lyrics are cool, and the music is awesome. Check out "Taxicab Messiah", "Creature", "Trickster", and from their upcoming album, "Zerospace". "Zerospace" is really what hooked me onto them. Suzanne Vega I only got to listen to this CD once, but I liked what I heard. I'm going to have to listen to it again before I give any detailed comment on it. Yeah, that's it for this week. Oh! Does anyone have any Drill mp3s? I'd really like to check them out, but they seem to be one of the thousands of words that have been blocked on Napster. Eleni Kelakos, our last house concert, spoke of them very positively, so I went ahead and ordered their first CD when from A&B Sounds in Vancouver when I picked up Veda's latest (Tangent: the latest Veda is awesome--I think it's one of the most innovative albums yet of Veda--she really shows of her piano playing with some of hte most complex rhythms I've heard--plus there is a driving urgency to some of the songs that I haven't heard her do before. Definitely not a typical girl with piano album though that is for sure.) I must say that these women are awesome! They are much more moody and atmospheric than typical harmonizing "sister" bands. THeir voices are dark and low and lovely, their arrangements are wonderful. Overall it's a great album--I just ordered their second CD too--will let you know how it compares, but I think anyone into the more acoustic side of ecto would definitely love them. Is anyone else familiar with them? I see they have an entry pending in the ectophile's guide but don't remember them being mentioned much on the list. Jeff Hanson n.p. Gling-Glo - Bjork n.r. I'd love to see her perform in New Haven. She is the one performer who I can truly say changed my life and the way I looked at the world when I was 15 and heard Horses for the first time. I grew up listening to folk music via my father's interest in that genre. Just before Horses came out, I read an article about Bob Dylan in Rolling Stone Magazine. Dylan spoke about his protege Patty Smith and her first album which would be coming out two months hence. I bought Horses thinking that it was going to be a folky album! - --Valerie Richardson meredith wrote: > > Hi, > > Patti Smith is playing at Toad's Place in New Haven a week from tonight > (!). Isn't that a bit premature? I mean, she's not dead yet, and she's still making music. That concept just seems really weird to me. I have seen quite a few tribute albums for artists still living and performing. Bill Mazur mentioned a KaTe trib; I have a couple of tribute albums, one based on Genesis during the PG era, and some folks on the Ecto List are currently recovering from recording their contributions to the Happy Rhodes tribute album. I don't think that a tribute to a musical performer necessarily requires the 'tributee' to be no longer composing, or for that matter, decomposing. (sorry!) The concept of tribute goes back in history many centuries, and was generally paid ( in loot of some kind) to a living monarch, not a dead one, from the latin 'tribuere', to give out among the tribes. The popular modern definition is 'something said or given to show praise, admiration or gratitude', no mention is made of posthumous requirements. Personally speaking, I'd prefer to get those goodies before kicking off this realm :) Phil ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 3 May 2001 21:52:25 -0500 From: tenthvictim@mindspring.com Subject: Some unknown singer I heard down at Taco Bueno while I was ingesting a large taco and reading music and movie reviews Howdy, You guys like to play that game where you get minimal information on a song or singer and try to guess who it is and what song she was singing. So: I just came back from Taco Bueno (the Two-handed tacos are good) where I heard over their song service a lady singing an intense (in its own way) little song. She stood out from the poppish rock and roll around her. The song she sang had these words in the chorus, "We are all the same inside." The music was countryish (slightly naked guitar) but I got the impression the singer was more of a punk than a Nashville gal. I think she is an alto. Now, don't make fun of me if it's Britney Spears or Jewell or someone like that and it is a mega-smash all over the country. I lead a very sheltered life. I greatly enjoyed Donald Keller's account of Kristeen Young. I could see her up on the stage playing and singing. Donald always describes her dress and hairdo so that I can visualize it. I get an image of a punk Pippa Longstockings trying to terrify the world.
