I've not heard the new Ani but a swedish review has had me a bit mad..It goes something like this.."Imagewise Ani is an almost parodic example of the kind of mad and sad singers who have almost become an own genre in the us. Politically aware and they all wear doc martens and also happen to be lesbian. Remember everyone from Tracy Chapman to Phranc." He then goes on to praise the record but talk about reducing women into stereotypes. Would be nice if the music could be focus instead of the image. My apologies that the Expresso Garden Diva night could not be closer to Ectofest, night-wise. I begged the booker for Thurs (their open mic night once a month and sacred to her) and begged for Fri "there will be thousands of people from all over the world here for the week-end" typical Cy-booking lie, ahh, tactic but she was already booked for Friday.....Wendy actually flys in on Wednesday, so it is not perfect for her either but the best I could do before I dashed away....should be a great night, I have wanted for so long to introduce Pipa's lovely voice to the ectolist folks. She is very fun, delightful and unusual...should be a great night followed by another great night followed by a great day party. Thanks to Phil for hooking me up with the place, hope to see you all (all that can) there. Oh, by the way, my Happy tribute song, Feed the Fire, was all done by me, so don't listen to anything Phil says. I take full responsibility for the crazy tribal version I have mentioned. Now my band for Ectofest will be a mix of Azigza (drummer) Blind (sitar/didg) and new folks. that's all all say right now but hey, Philly was beautiful, Baltimore was fun, jumping into a recording cold 2 hours before you are due at the airport is very exciting also. But nothing beats a tow truck for jangling your nerves. good night, good morning, not sure which coast time I'm on, cyoakha O'Manion Music PO Box 198 Mill Valley, CA 94941 lanblind@teleport.com http://www.landoftheblind.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Apr 2001 09:58:13 -0400 From: Gary Davis Subject: Joy Askew - The Same Desparado Hi, folks: The latest Artist Shop newsletter is out and you'll find it in its entirety at . As Joy Askew seems to be mentioned here occasionally, I thought I would share the following about her latest release. Coming soon on our Third Contact page Joy Askew/The Same Desparado A new collection of songs and music from Joy Askew entitled " The Same Desperado" features not only her voice and guitar but also the sound of her band of 2000. The arrangements are woven around the lines of jazz bassist Matt Garrison, the looseness of modern drummer Bill Dobrow and the electronics and trumpet of New York drum and bass technician Takuya Nakamura. The overall impression evokes Steely Dan, the jazz era of Joni Mitchell and Radiohead. soundbite Gary ************************************************************** Gary Davis The Artist Shop The Other Road http://www.artist-shop.com artshop@artist-shop.com phone: 877-856-1158, 330-929-2056 fax:330-945-4923 INDEPENDENT PROGRESSIVE MUSIC!!! ************************************************************** Artist Shop Radio Check out the latest Artist Shop newsletter at http://www.artist-shop.com/news.htm ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Apr 2001 10:32:35 EDT From: Dracovixen@aol.com Subject: More new music Ok, I got some more new music... Lords of Acid - Voodoo-U I love this album. Quirky, filled with blatant phrases about sex, sex organs, STDs, and drugs, this stuff makes me laugh like no other album ever will. I will be getting more Lords of Acid albums. Not even Weird Al makes me laugh this much. Most songs are at a fast, heavy pace, filled with industrial and electronic music, but a touch of reggae on one song ("Marijuana in Your Brain"), and the woman's (Nikkie Van Lierop) voice is amazing. If you aren't easily offended by perverted lyrics, and like the industrial sound, check them out. The songs that got me hooked were "Marijuana in Your Brain", "Out Comes the Evil", and "The Crablouse". Drain S.T.H. - Freaks of Nature Yay! I got another Drain STH album. I have mentioned them before...female version of Alice in Chains. But have their own style, of course. I love the heavy music, and the almost droning vocals actually only complete it at its very best. Lyrics are ok, and a lot of stuff I can identify with. Try "Wish", "Simon Says", "The Bubble Song", and "Leech". That's all for now. I should be getting Kidneythieves soon, so you will hear from me then. :) I have noticed that on this list the popular type of ecto music seems to be the acoustic, almost folksy type of girls...which I have nothing against, I just hope that no one is...what's the word I am looking for?....offended? That's not it, but it will have to do...The types of music I have been getting more and more into have been heavier, more industrial and heavy rock, and such, with female vocalists that write their own songs...It fit the ecto archetype written down on the ecto page somewhere, it's just not all acoustic guitar with the ocassional backing band, as seems to be the common trend here...I thought this list just seemed like a great place to share music created by women, and these bands I've mentioned are just that...So, what I guess I am trying to say is that I do not want to deviate from what this list was created for, and if I am, please tell me. I'm probably worried about nothing, but I know that some people are very particular about what subjects go on a mailing list, and I just want to be told if I am slightly off-topic here. I have been a fan of the Lords since they released the song "Rough Sex" about 10 years ago. Nikkie Van Lierop, the lead singer is a great live act as well. I recommend seeing them in concert...if, as someone mentioned earlier, you can stomach the vulgarity. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Apr 2001 12:24:38 -0400 (EDT) From: dmw Subject: bring da noise On Tue, 24 Apr 2001 Dracovixen@aol.com wrote: > I have noticed that on this list the popular type of ecto music seems to be > the acoustic, almost folksy type of girls...which I have nothing against, I > just hope that no one is...what's the word I am looking for?....offended? Can't speak for all, but I'm far from being offended... "drain s.t.h." has gone straight into my "greed" file...a female-led version of alice in chain sounds great to me. In fact I thought I'd take the opportunity to mention a few loud things you specifically might want to look into that have come across my desk lately... you're pretty (s/t) -- heavy goth with theatrical vocals. lots of processed guitars and reverbed vox, recommend if you ever wished "all about eve" (the band) had rocked out a little more. god among men _fourth degree tear_ -- dense crunchy riffs and one of the most convincing metal-styled female vocalists i've ever heard -- she can really do that full-throated metal roar thing (as opposed to, say, a c. love punk scream). i can mostly even overlook the earnestness of the lyrics. the bonus track is a storming, thrashed-up version of madonna's "like a prayer;" it's pretty funny. simon stinger _private collection_ -- snotty vocals and jumpy upbeat rock, like if the first couple blondie records were punkier and more guitars instead of keyboards. i think these were all cdbaby.com finds. you can listen to two minutes or so of some of the songs to see if you agree iwth my assessment/recommendation. the gathering _mandylion_ vaguely prog-flavored metal with another theatrical, gothy- chanteuse on top of it. great crunchy guitar tone, but i'm glad the drums on my record sound fatter . this is the only record of theirs i have (one seems sort of adequate to me, actually) but you can read more about them (and some other heavy female-fronted acts, among a great many other things) at glenn mcdonald's very swell "the war against silence" www.furia.com/twas - -- d. - - oh no, you've just read mail from doug = dmw@radix.net - get yr pathos - - www.shoddyworkmanship.net -- post punk skronk rawk = the new thing - - www.pathetic-caverns.com -- books, flicks, tunes, etc. = reviews - - www.fecklessbeast.com -- angst, guilt, fear, betrayal! = rock music ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Apr 2001 20:14:08 -0400 From: Philip David Morgan Subject: =?iso-8859-1?Q?A_Prikosnov=E9nie_primer?= Good Evening, Ectopians: Since I mentioned that Louisa John-Krol's newest album, _Ariel_, is due soon on the French label Prikosnovinie, I probably should say a few things about their site (http://www.multimania.com/prikos/ ), which hasn't been revised since last December (and hopefully will soon because of the impending release of _Ariel_): Prikosnovinie is described by its site as a home for: "Heavenly voices Medieval music Techno Electronica Ethnica Childish music [and] Strange Rock" Their other acts include Cherche-Lune (whose style is described as "medieval neo-classical") , Jack or Jive (a Japanese ensemble), Klimperei, and Les Secrets de Morphie (whose members last recorded as XVII Vie). Unfortunately, their label apparently has no real confidence in any audio file format besides .aif (QuickTime 4 can deal with that), and those samples they offer are very short (10-20 seconds tops). You'll fare better re-directing your browser to atrecordings (http://www.atrecordings.com/ ), a Belgian site with streaming RealAudio. Just go to the Labels page, scroll down and highlight Prikosnovinie, then click. Most of their roster is there, and you'll have a much better idea of what they sound like. Prikosnovinie's US prices are decent ($13-16 tops for a single album, but there are shorter and thus cheaper discs available as well), and you can easily send concealed cash in a registered envelope with your orders. (Prices are quoted in francs, Euros, and Yankee dollars.) So far, Les Secrets de Morphie has made the biggest impression, although I'm not quite ready to buy yet. Philip David (trying to be a wise customer) 4/24-25/2001 P.S.: One of Louisa's _Ariel_ tracks, "Blackbird," will appear on Prikosnovinie's _Belladonne 2_ compilation, or so she's learned... - --- http://members.dencity.com/SakuraNation/ - --- "Go back and finish your oatmeal." ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Apr 2001 18:17:40 -0700 (PDT) From: Neb Rodgers Subject: Fwd: NEWS FROM JULIA FORDHAM A new Julia Fordham album in Sept! :-) - -Neb - --- Porcelain wrote: > Date: Tue, 24 Apr 2001 16:07:56 -0700 > Reply-to: The music of Julia Fordham > > From: Porcelain > Subject: [JF] NEWS FROM JULIA FORDHAM > To: JULIA-FORDHAM@HOME.EASE.LSOFT.COM > > Dear All, > > Please forgive this mass mail out, but so many of > you have written to me > recently asking when I am going to sign a new deal > and start a new record. > I wanted to let you know, that FINALLY, last > Tuesday, April 17, the deed was > done. While I apparently see a few somewhat brighter spots in her post-Dilate catalog, I'm in much the same boat - and as I, too, have hesitated picking up her new discs I really can't offer anything in that regard... BUT... Don't neccessarily let her recent work scare you away from her current tour. While I didn't keep score, her show here last Saturday had to consist of at least 70% pre-LPC material. It was quite enjoyable, even if the brass and keyboards didn't always add to the songs. Guess I'll always consider Ani, Andy, and Sara to be the paramount of 'live Ani', but am coping with that being history and can still get a large amount of pleasure from her live performances (audience permitting, and in contrast to my last two experiences, this time it did). bob ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V7 #117 **************************
