A review of Ruby's new album, "Short Staffed at the Gene Pool", appeared in yesterday's Sunday Observer. It reads: "Silverfish rocker turned trip-hop queen, Scots born Lesley Rankine was bushwhacked by the collapse of Creation, who were to release this second album. Though two years late arriving, it proves an inventive outing, shuttling between the coffee table tase of Morcheeba and more outre elements of jazz and rock. Rankine herself narrates, scats and sings breathily, at best creating an intimate atmosphere for her confessins of love, lust and loss on titles such as 'Queen of Denial'. An accomplished work, from a distinctive female voice." Sounds good. I'm sad to say that while I've liked parts of the recent albums a lot (_Dilate_'s still my favourite, though) even I haven't been able to listen to this one. So far it does less than nothing for me. And with a new Veda Hille, a new Kristin Hersh, Splashdown's _Blueshift_ finding its way into my hands, and discovering Bonfire Madigan's _Saddle The Bridge_, well, it's unlikely to get back into my disc player anytime soon. I found it extremely disappointing so far. - --Neile - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Neile Graham ...... http://www.sff.net/people/neile ....... neile@sff.net Les Semaines: A Weekly Journal . http://www.sff.net/people/neile/semaines The Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music ....... http://www.smoe.org/ectoguide ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 23 Apr 2001 10:18:21 -0400 From: Valerie Richardson Subject: Missing bookmarks My computer crashed recently, and I lost all of my bookmarks. Songs Inspired By Literature Project (SIBL) unites musicians and the literature that inspires them. Through a songwriting competition soliciting songs inspired by literature, songwriters around the country will be given the opportunity to dedicate their craft toward the cause of adult literacy. They will compete for $2500, ten winning spots and the chance for their work to be featured on Chapter One, The SIBL Project compilation CD. As there are a number of talented musicians lurking around ecto, and even more that can be reached by ecto members, I thought I would share this information. The entry fee is only $20.00 per song. You can learn more about SIBL on the website: http://www.siblproject.org It is a worthy cause. For the record, I love Little Plastic Castle. I think it's her least representative album, the furthest from every other album she's done. I really really like To the Teeth. I don't have any of her collaboration stuff either. Up x 6 did nothing for me. There are a few songs that are okay, but I found the others either boring or annoying, and I didn't think the lyrics were up to her usual standard. And that's pretty much how I feel about this new set, Revelling/Reckoning. Some okay songs, but nothing really strikes me. It would even be good if I had a negative reaction to the album, but I just don't have much of any reaction at all. I do think the packaging and the liner notes, etc, are very nice. Have you heard Kate Rusby's cover of Iris Dement's "My Town"? :) Ellen, planning on taking a friend from Colorado to see Kate (Rusby) in June when said friend is over here. ===== "Literature stops in 1100. I have both the ten track promo and the official Quinlan Road 6 track release, and both look like official releases. I bought my copy of the promo at a record fair some years ago, and it's clearly a factory pressed CD, the sound quality is excellent, the cd is not labeled but the title and track listing are printed on it (as in official cd's). There's no booklet with my cd but only the inlay in the tray which is good quality printing as well. The official 6 track release comes in a cardboard sleeve with a picture similar to the cover of "The mask and mirror". So neither of these match your description... I hope you can return your copy and find a genuine promo! Best wishes, Marion n.p. Loreena McKennitt - Live in San Francisco n.r. Robert Jordan - A crown of swords (The wheel of time, bk. 7) and W.J. Maryson - Rastoth (Meestermagier, bk. 5) and L.E. Good Evening, Ectofolk: Louisa John-Krol, whose _Ariel_ CD is still to be released in Europe by Prikosnovinie (http://www.multimania.com/prikos/ ), may find herself going to the States, or so she has advised me. Apparently the French label has sparked interest from its US agent, Middle Pillar (http://www.middlepillar.com/ ) in New York. In light of this, I e-mailed both companies this past weekend to please go forward and help Louisa plan a tour (I didn't mention my friendship with her when I wrote!). Maybe the other Louisa fans on this list would like to drop both companies little hints as well? Prikosnovinie - prikos@worldnet.fr Middle Pillar - feedback@middlepillar.com I made a special request when I wrote them: let Louisa have enough time to roam around between gigs so she can network with local storytellers and musicians wherever she goes. She _is_ also a oral storyteller (kindred to Diane Wolkstein and Heather Forest, among others) and a teacher, if I remember rightly...
