I did a search for the 2 releases, and found them both at www.compact-huset.no but also these pages are in norwegian but it should be possible to find your way around there. Another way to get the album would be to contact the label through email - their address is: StiffNippleRec@akks.no I must warn you though, that some of the bands are very young/new and sound that way. There are, however, some really good songs on there. The first release got at least one song by Mari Boine and that should make up for much of the others :) It is good to see that there are so many new bands and artists popping up here, and that some like Briskeby, Lene Marlin and now a new one Siri Gjfre (she sounds very promising at least) appear. - -- Yngve ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Apr 2001 06:36:49 -0700 (PDT) From: Craig Gidney Subject: Antony and the Johnsons/Ronan Quays I just got these two excellent cds: Antony and the Johnsons is beautiful, dark cabaret sung with wavering emotion by a bald, pale hermaphroditic person named Antony. His voice is beyond gender--he summons recollections of Brel, Piaf, Marc Almond and Simone. The songs are of love lost. Pianos, cellos and violins swirling the background. Ronan Quays THE EBBING WINGS OF WISDOM is the neo-medieval chant project of Rhett Brewer. Someone recommended him to me as a male Lisa Gerrard. Its an apt description--his tenor is multitracked and he sings in some unidentifiable tongue. The instrumentation is sparse and includes mandolin, organs and acoustic guitars. Very beautiful, with great titles 'Salt and Bitter Truth' and 'As the Spinster Spins.' - --Craig ===== Craig L. According to the organizers, apparently there are going to be other special surprises. I can't wait. By the way, for those who live in Los Angeles (or nearby) check out the lau mailing list. It's about music in LA and many good shows get announced on there prior to public knowledge (like pj harvey's show at the Viper Room awhile back or the wonderful My Bloody Valentine tribute show that happened last night). Fans of Abby Travis might want to take notice too. I would like to send an EctoFestWest promo CD to all the local public and college radio stations. I know there are a ton. If someone can make a list for me, as well as tell me which shows might be interested that'd be swell. I need to start informing Santa Cruz that we are coming. A few people have asked me about the venue for EFWest. The Kuumbwa Jazz Center is an indoor venue with general admission seating. I thought there might be some confusion because I number the tickets on the back. This is not your seat assignment, it is just for my own tracking. I believe the back row of the Kuumbwa is eight rows back. It is impossible to get a bad seat, so don't feel you need to show up at 3pm to get a good seat. Having said that, those who arrive earliest will get the best seats (doors open at 5:30). They are from LA, just signed to Palm Pictures, and are electronica/pop with Geri Soriano-Lightwood on vocals. Really brilliant. Alittle bit of Eartha Kitt/Shirley Bassey meets alot of Debbie Harry and Tracey Thorn/EBTG, and mixes in some memories of Brian Jones to accompany on sitar and percussion...all gone electronica/pop. Oh, I am having a fabulous time with this new find. For website fun (flash 4 required) and song samples... http://www.sbleisure.com Oh, and Marcella Detroit's site now has a HTML version and on the flash 5 site, and special feature where you can mix one of her songs.....and new remixes/singles at MP3.com. She'll be in NY at a record store signing and selling rare and new things off next week (tuesday) Details at her site. http://www.marcelladetroit.com Cheers Birdie ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Apr 2001 17:15:37 -0600 (MDT) From: Neal Copperman Subject: Re: Norwegian artists ... Thanks for the info Yngve. Sounds like it's not as compelling a sampler as I had assumed. I already have a lot of Mari Boine, so that's not a strong enough selling point. Will keep it in the back of my mind though. I had been listening to Lindsey Buckingham's _Out of the Cradle_ a day before he listened to it. It seems to be one of the best pop albums composed in a while. Maybe not up there with the best of the Beatles, but there doesn't seem to be one throw away song on it. The aural textures on it are fun to feel, too. Craig sent information on Lift to Experience. Glad to see homeboys making it big. They played in a bar in town a while back and I was aware of their presence but didn't get down to see them. The singer and guitar player is the son of a pentecostal preacher, so his writing is going to be full of biblical images (I think). Denton hasn't had a hot band since Deep Blue Something. Not too many of us here are willing to claim Deep Blue Something. Too wimpy. And besides that, they moved out of town once they hit it big. The good bands stay. I'm always nice to the waiters and waitresses in town because I don't want to contribute to the emotional trauma of a future rock star. This weekend a fraternity house throws an annual block party called the Fry Street Fair. They usually have a load of Dallas, Ft. Worth, and Denton bands. This year there are two alternate music fairs within blocks of Fry Street. If I don't hear some new bands this weekend, I should be strung up. The weekend following the upcoming weekend, the city presents its Jazz Festival. I get to see two of my favorite bands, and John Scofield is the headliner.
