All I can say is everything I"ve heard about her live performance was totally correct, she puts on the greatest high-energy/breath taking show! I was hoping for a few more acoustic numbers (she did one, "up up up up up up") and the added horn section got annoying sometimes but besides that no complaints haha. The crowd was fun and Ani played a great set mixing her new stuff (which she suprisingly didn't do much of) with stuff from "Dilate"-"To the Teeth". I just wish it would've gone on all night! Another good thing was the opener was Erin McKeown, she was not promoted with the show...I wasn't aware there was even an opening act but I'm SOOOO Glad she was! I have heard "Blackbird" before and just sort of threw it away but now I want to go back and listen to everything...she's so much fun live and has a great stage prescence that you can't help but fall in love with her and her music. Definatly worth seeing! Anyway I had a great time! :-) ~eric "I'm mired in the marrow of my (well...ain't that) funny bone learning how to be alone and devastated" ~Ani DiFranco ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 14 Apr 2001 03:00:05 -0400 (EDT) From: Mike Matthews Subject: Today's your birthday, friend... i*i*i*i*i*i i*i*i*i*i*i *************** *****HAPPY********* **************BIRTHDAY********* *************************************************** *************************************************************************** ***************** Stuart Myerburg (stuart@sph.emory.edu) ****************** *************************************************************************** -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- - -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- Stuart Myerburg Mon April 14 1969 Aries T-Bone Wed April 15 1992 happy cat Jeff Hanson Sat April 16 1966 Aries Michael Klouda Mon April 17 1967 Aries Harry Foster Sat April 21 1956 NiceGuy Kjetil Torgrim Homme Thu April 23 1970 Taurus Jeff Burka Thu April 24 1969 GoFlyAKite Christine Waite Tue April 25 1972 Taurus Matt Adams Thu April 26 1962 Taurus Brad Hutchinson Tue April 28 1964 What sign? That's what I thought when the Nields and Suddenly Tammy!, among others, announced their deals. I think I understand it better, now. I think there are two things that the fanbase is generally unaware of: First, the record companies as institutions may be evil, but their *people* generally aren't. If you're in a band being courted, your ears are being filled with all the good things the record company is gonna do for you, and why you are going to be the exception, getting the support without which the other acts die. The big catch is that the people telling you this are probably being sincere, BUT they don't have the business power to follow-through on their promises (and in many cases they will have been fired before your record comes out -- turnover in the A&R field is high). Second, if you're in a band and you want to give in excess of say, fifty thousand people a chance to hear your music -- and there's every reason Splashdown should have judged their appeal to be broader than that -- picking one of the majors is virtually your only option. There are exceptions -- ani difranco, sure, million seller with no major label, Dave Matthews, a couple of the hip-hop artists -- but that's pretty much through the tour-your-ass-off model, and is not necessarily suitable for all artists. You still won't be seeing *me* on a major anytime soon, and I will continue to advocate that bands force record companies to restructure deals by *not signing* unfavorable deals -- but I understand why some bands will make other choices. It's also still true that contracts are -- rather deliberately -- damned hard to read. THings like public performance rights limitations are still frequently buried in there, and if you don't have a good lawyer a band questioning any given weird provision is probably told that it's "standard practice" and not up for negotiation. My favorite is the "new media" discount for CDs, and the 10% breakage rate. Maybe you can show a stub from one of your unemployment checks? Or more likely, it's just an honor-system thing. If there's anyone out there who has run a show where there was such a discount, please feel free to shed some light ... as someone who puts on shows I'm interested, because with the economy heading the way it is, sadly I might need that information someday. ======================================= Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille ======================================= Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://www.smoe.org/meth/muzak.html ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 14 Apr 2001 13:03:54 -0400 From: meredith Subject: veda hille in berkeley Hi! Speaking of EctoFestWest plans, I suppose it's high time we make some, since still all we have are plane reservations. Well, I **CAN** go as I will be arriving in San Francisco on June 7 to start my residency at Headlands. I am so psyched to *finally* see Veda live. I just ordered her new album a few days ago and am looking forward to it. BTW, when exactly is ectofestwest? I wasn't paying much attention to the posts since I didn't think I could go. Also, and I will mention this again later, I hope Bay Are 'philes will keep in mind July 15. That's Open Studio day at Headlands, and I'll be doing something. Reading from my work, I don't know what else. It's free and open to the public. Thanks, Meth, for making my day. I am smilingly happy at the thought of seeing Veda live. I just hope I remember to get tickets!! Headlands is short for Headlands Center for the Arts, located on Fort Barry in the Marin Bay in Sausalito. They run an artist-in-residence program for people from certain states and countries. They also rent studio space to Bay Area artists and have an artist affiliate program. And they have programs for the public and stuff. I'm one of the 2 NJ artists-in-residence for 2001. I'll be continuing work on my first novel there, and whatever other creative writing I'm inspired to do. Artists include visual artists, writers, performance artists, composers, choreographers, and people doing miscellaneous unquantifiable (at least by me) things. It looks like a really cool place. Their website is www.headlands.org. I know they have programs for NJ, Ohio, and California, and I forget where else. And I can't remember how it came to be these places. I guess it's whoever puts up the money for the residencies. I know the NJ ones, for instance, are sponsored by the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation. Here is the URL for more detailed information: http://www.ectofest.org/west/ I just wanted to take a moment to thank Shelly for all of her efforts so far in putting the event together. Shelly has been doing a marvelous job carrying the torch and making things happen. In addition, I would like to thank Meth for her guidance and advice to Shelly, Phil and I. Lately (really since the beginning of the year) I have been on the fringes of the planning for the event due to my extremely busy work schedule. Plus Phil, Cyoakha and I have been busy working on musical contributions to the 10th Anniversary Ecto Tribute CD. FYI, to any Ectophiles staying around for a few days after the Ectofest West event, Bill Bruford (original Yes and later King Crimson drummer/percussionist extraordinaire) will be playing with his jazz ensemble, Earthworks, at the Kuumbwa on Monday June 11th. Below is information about the Bay Area dates that were listed for Earthworks via the Artist Shop newsletter. Ooh! ooh! The question is, can I convince the boyfriend to go to *three* shows on our trip (I'm hoping we'll also go to Phil's thing, in addition to EFW). > Speaking of EctoFestWest plans, I suppose it's high time we make some, > since still all we have are plane reservations. If anyone in the area can > suggest cheap places to stay, I'm all ears! Can't really help too much with this. We're staying in downtown SF, where we booked around for ~170/night for the 7 nights we'll be there. Not quite a cheap place to stay, but we did well enough on our flight ($247 round trip from BWI!) that it didn't seem *too* bad. Anyway, we'll be in the bay area from the 6th-13th, should there be any plans in the works. n.p. launchcast ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V7 #107 **************************
