Both Marla T and Joe win prizes for entering. Joseph was declared overall Grand Prize winner based not only on his prodigious output ( 2 limericks and 1 haiku) but also his incisive wit, his tireless enthusiasm for including multisyllabic words, and for his glorious haiku. Some on the list may be unaware that Joseph is a published poet, in addition to his myriad other skills, check out his website, it's at the bottom of his posts. Very sad news. Especially for me because I was just really getting into them, having finally ordered their two CDs, "Halfworld" and "Stars and garters"... I don't know the details of how and why they got screwed, so what I'm about to say is not aimed at Splashdown but allow me to vent my frustration: WHY do artists keep getting themselves into deals that will clearly bring nothing but trouble? .. I'm thinking of Paradise Motel, who got sent to England only not to be allowed to perform for nearly a year, even when they had the gigs arranged. ... Eat the Menu, pushed into a change of name the moment they got signed (they became Mercy Bell) I remember when I heard that, I just had this premonition they were doomed... And they were. ...Swirl, who still have not been able to release their CD, by now more than a year after it was finished... These are all examples from my own backyard - feel free to provide your own. Grey Eye Glances might be one... they are all promising bands who were assured of respectable career as independents but threw it away for the lure of the contract with the major - why? We blame the record companies, and well we should because they are the bad guys in this - but really, their wrongs are so well documented by now, anyone who still gets into bed with them has to bear some responsibility for the result... Sigh... np. samples from Splashdown website... and BTW Neile, do you know of any way of obtaining that "Blueshift"? I presume this was that "wonderful album that will never have an official release"? I'd love to get my hands on it... - ------------------------------------------------------ They will do whatever we let them get away with. - -- Joseph Heller - ------------------------------------------------------ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Apr 2001 22:53:45 -0700 From: Neile Graham Subject: Re: RIP Splashdown Andrew Fries wrote: >and BTW Neile, do you know of any way of obtaining that "Blueshift"? Some people on Splashdown's mailing list have copies of _Blueshift_ from a special limited-time secret availability and there are a few promo copies (slightly different from the mailing list version) out there that Java/Capitol released before they changed their minds. Apparently _Redshift_, the ep from _Blueshift_ that Java/Capitol _did_ release is no longer available. There are several downloadable songs available on their website, including one final song. Click on "songs" at http://splashdown.drawbridge.com/splashdown/index.html. I'm really sorry I never saw them live and will definitely be keeping my ears open for news of Melissa Kaplan's next projects. - --Neile - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Neile Graham ...... http://www.sff.net/people/neile ....... neile@sff.net Les Semaines: A Weekly Journal . http://www.sff.net/people/neile/semaines The Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music ....... http://www.smoe.org/ectoguide ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V7 #106 **************************
