Hi... This is a reminder that Abby Travis is playing at IOTA as an opening act for Candy Kane at 9PM on Thursday April 5. Turning my computer on has ranked just below filing for me lately. I usually rip through my e-mail and delete those not specifically for me (judging by the subject line). So if you have sent me an e-mail and I have not responded - it may be sitting in my trash. Or if you have mentioned EFWest in some other post, I probably missed it. If anyone has any questions and needs to get ahold of me you may call me at 707-795-3097. Or just be really clear with your subject line. EFWest is well. There's probably something really important I'm forgetting to do, and I'm sure I shall shortly be a mess. I'll try to make it if rehearsal schedule permits...doesn't look good, though, I think we're auditioning an drummer, so I probably need to be there) that Abby Travis is playing on Thursday, which reminded me that I meant to remind everybody that the really incredible Emm Gryner is playing at the self-same IOTA tomorrow (Tuesday). Her first headlining show there, so I'm sure all supporters are welcome. www.iotaclubandcafe.com > Hi... > > This is a reminder that Abby Travis is playing at IOTA > as an opening act for Candy Kane at 9PM on Thursday > April 5. > > Information and soundsamples of Abby's postmodern > ironic cabaret may be found here: > > http://www.abbytravis.com > > ===== > Craig L. I enjoy it very, very much - and am anxiously awaiting the companion DVD to be manufactured, which you can order from her site (www.jonathabrooke.com). My favorite song is the duet with Neil Finn - "New Dress." On a related note, I just received Neil Finn's new one, "Nil Fun," which is gorgeous, as expected. I'm just pissed Sony dropped him.... I just read that Tori Amos is enlisting Adrian Belew for her next album - I'm happy about that; Adrian is an excellent guitarist (and I hope he does some vocals, too). I'm late to the party re: Bjork's dress, but let me be the first here to say I hated it. I have absolutely no understanding of why people enjoy wearing dead animals, or in Bjork's case, the look of a dead animal. While I'm sure her designer/friend has talent overall, I found the dress in extremely pure taste from an animal lovers/animal rights point of view. I admire Bjork's individuality but not at the expense of common sense. Another shameless plug from my label: Elvis Costello collaborated with mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter for an album called "For the Stars." Here, von Otter doesn't sing in her opera voice but in her natural voice, and it's quite amazing. I think most Ecto-folk would dig it, especially if you like Elvis Costello to begin with. The album is out next Tuesday in the U.S., 4/10. ~~ Suzanne ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 02 Apr 2001 18:11:15 -0400 From: "JoAnn Whetsell" Subject: new stuff Last Tuesday I got three new albums: Rachael Sage's "Painting of a Painting," Shawn Colvin's "Whole New You," and "Angel in the Dark," a release of the last recordings Laura Nyro did before she died. I've only gotten a chance to listen to the first 2 so far. "Painting of a Painting" is a must-have as far as I'm concerned, certainly for anyone who loves "Smashing the Serene." Shawn Colvin's new one is, I think, overall perhaps stronger than her last album "A Few Small Repairs." But it also seems to have the same general pace and mood throughout, and fewer stand-out songs. Still, it's good to have new music, new stories from Shawn, and this I will keep, and recommend for fans. Also, I'm in Lake Forest, Illinois until the 25th April, so would love to try to do something with people in this area. Also trying to get up to Minneapolis for the Nordic music festival, at least part of it. It was actually really awesome to stare right into her eyes and have her staring right into mine. Her eyes are gorgeous, they didn't glaze over while she was playing, she was looking right at me. It was very extraordinary. And I almost died when she played "Gazebo tree" and "Heaven", I just about almost died. It's definitely an experience to hear Kristin sing "bless my baby eyes don't you know Jesus died?" while staring you right in the eyes. Mmm. I thought the dress was at best ridiculous, at worst offensive. I mean, the poofy feathery part might have been okay, if a bit silly, but having the 'swan' head hanging from her neck was way too much. The only rational I can see for it was as a parody of those other outfits featuring dead animals (the head hanging in a similar fashion to, say, a fox stole). But IMO, it went too far, was just utterly tasteless. John Higdon (Talamasca) ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V7 #95 *************************
