Marjan is the very same designer of the dress Bjork wore to the > Cannes Film Festival (any one see that one?) MARJAN PEJOSKI is fabulous. as an avid follower of fashion (i love anything that has to do with design, and that especially includes fashion) there was an article about PEJOSKI in DUTCH magazine, a couple of issues back (issue 29). it was as small article, but basically it discussed how everyone in the french press thought the pink tulle concertina skirt BJORK wore was by JUNYA WATANABE (avant garde fashion designer who design under his own line, and does line of clothes for COMME de GARCON), but ACTUALLY it was actually by PEJOSKI from his fall 2000 debut line entitled MARIANA. i can type it for anyone who is interested (it's only about two paragraphs). by the way DUTCH magazine is probably my favorite magazine. not only does it showcase the absolute best fashion out there - it mostly is a fashion magazine after all, but it goes far and beyond the usual high end boring labels (GUCCI, PRADA, blah blah blah - every damn fashion magazine licks the ass of TOM and MIUCCIA...) showing designers fresh out of college - some still in school even, up and coming designers in small countries (and big countries too), and designers that cross the line between high art and wearable clothing. it also has an excellent blend of men and women clothing (something that actually is quite rare out there - as most fashion magazines are gender specific). BUT it also has excellent taste in music - covering musicians like JIM O'ROURKE and DAMON and NAOMI, and STEPHIN MERRIT, as well as excellent world wide coverage of visual art and performing art as well. it's so damn refreshing to see contemporary eastern art covered in a magazine in a way that totally just showcases it as is, instead of trying to put some damn fetish spin on it like "this month TRIBAL TIBETAN artwork is the fad, with artists and designers appropriating (read: stealing) the look and using it in their own work" but don't get me on a soapbox. okay. i am going back to lurking. if anyone knows of a design firm in SF that is looking for a mid to senior level designer (preferably print, but i do web as well) let me know....you all should know my work, i did last years ECTOFEST poster.... see ya irvin ps. wasn't GOLDIE HAWN so damn cute when she messed up her presentation? SOOO damn CUTE!!!!! i loved it. i love her. i think i want to run out and rent a bunch of GOLDIE HAWN movies now just to watch her.... ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 30 Mar 2001 15:34:01 +0300 From: Juha Sorva Subject: Amy X Neuburg popcorn smile cabaret brain marimba solarium kick ass riot kangaroo rock twinkle skirt roller coaster party I was just browsing through the Ectoguide, and happened upon the Amy X Neuburg page. Several reviews there raved about the album _Utechma_ (which indeed is a fine piece of work), but the newer and very different _Sports! Chips! As I soon found out, however, the album beggars my abilities of sentential expression, and I was reduced to using isolated nouns. I may have failed to make my point up there. They're called Barka Vall, hail from the Swedish-speaking parts of Finland, and are well worth checking out. Some people here on Ecto are into Hedningarna and/or Garmarna, and might be pleased to hear that the earlier work of those bands is the closest comparison to Barka Vall I can make. Traditional instruments plus electric guitars; ethnic folk plus contemporary rock. The two women in the seven-piece group do most of the singing, often in two-voiced unison. Do it very nicely, too. Granted, they aren't emmahdrdelins, but that would have been too much to ask. Upon occasion, the guys 'chime' in as well, sounding alternatively like the king's knights departing for battle or aged bandits relating their lives' tales. A few of their songs have been written by the famous bard Trad, but the majority are original compositions, mostly rooted in Scandinavian balladry and mixed with not a few rock eclecticisms. Lyrically, it's romantically bleak, dramatic stuff, packed with enough of blood, witchcraft, God, devils, and various flavors of angst to make some darker-haired bands pale in comparison. As far as the music is concerned, I'd say that they're less disturbing than Garmarna. Safer, somehow. I mean, while I wouldn't call Barka Vall a particularly pleasant band, it's not like their music sounds (like Garmarna's sometimes does) as if it's out to kill you and swallow your firstborn, either. I guess they've still got to work on that part a bit. They've got one album out, called _Skogsflot_. There are samples on their Web site at http://www.barkavall.com/. Recommended, in particular to those of you who already know they like this genre. Juha n.p. At least a couple hundred people turned out, which was great to see. I picked up a copy of her new album, "Sunny Border Blue," and it is excellent! Its always nice to hear good songs that I've become very familiar with a whole new appreciation thanks to excellent production (I felt the same way about her last album as well.) Heh. When she played in DC, she told a story about a thing she did for Spanish TV. As part of the story, she discussed the fact that when she plays live, she needs to find something static, usually an exit sign, at which to stare. This allows her to concentrate and not be distracted by the audience. At the Spanish TV gig, there was nothing inanimate in the studio on which to fixate, she ended up choosing an audience member. She then proceeded to say how badly she felt for him, since he spent 30 minutes being screamed at. Anyone who's seen Kristin live will understand what I mean -- her eyes bug out, her mouth opens wide, and she *screams*. I actually find it disturbing. > I picked up a copy of her new album, "Sunny Border Blue," and it is > excellent! Indeed it is. I still prefer the folkiness of the two albums before _Sky Motel_, and think _Strange Angels_ is, by far, her strongest solo album. But I like the new stuff too. And Cat Stevens' "Trouble" is one of my favorite songs (yes, not only do I have it on CD, I also have the _Harold and Maude_ DVD), so having the Kristin Hersh version is a real treat. jeff n.p. _Raingods with Zippos[tm]_, Fish ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 30 Mar 2001 13:06:09 -0800 From: lanblind@teleport.com Subject: Re: ecto-digest V7 #91/Jack's review of OM hey Jack, thank you so much for your brief review of Ordinary Magic by Land of the Blind, it is my first review and you totally sound like you "GOT IT". After 2 and 1/2 years of flying back and forth from Portland to SF with the tapes, adding, changing, running out of money, borrowing, mastering, artwork done long distance (my art, sent to artist in Philly and back to pressing plant in Portland, which that alone stalled me 3 more months!) I have just totally lost my mind on the project, lost perpective and have not done anything (like sending it to stores, sending it to waiting reviewers, sending it to press folk, sending it to radio stations...I just sit and stare at the box) I have not even emailed our mailing list and told them it is for sale. All I have done is send them to advanced orders whose checks have been in my desk for 8 months and 10 to you. So you are a great completion, and your words may wake me up to get busy with it. Is the deadline for the Happy tribute album been extended as the rumour thru Phil and Bill (I think) said? If so email me fast, I am trying to finish my very strange version of FTF as fast as possible. Do you need info on instruments for credits? Is it really April 15th now? Will it be done by Ectofestwest if musicians like me can get their arty butts in gear? Did you say you had the art already? let me know any and all of the following and where to send and what (CD? I have been wanting to post something for awhile on Cy's new LotB CD "Ordinary Magic". Jack's review was really wonderful and right on the money. His post inspired me to share a few of my thoughts. Here they are: Another truly beautiful song on the OM CD is "Mother". This is a gorgeous elegy. Melo's flute and Krystov's dulcimer are so beautiful in accompanying Cy's lovingly bittersweet lyrics and voice. "Witches Of Kilkenny" is another favorite of mine. It builds to a ritualistic fever pitch. You can just picture the passionate dancing around the ever growing flames of the bonfire. Bill M. I don't know where the revised April 15th deadline idea came from. Perhaps you're all running late on your taxes, too :) I never mentioned that date (Well, until now). I'm asking for "as soon as possible", given that many of the contributors don't expect to be ready for 4/1. And yes, any hints or written info you can give me in advance will help me sketch it all out so when the finished products arrive, it'll be pretty much a drop-in. I'm not going to arbitrarily cut people out for missing any deadline, real or imagined. I'd rather have all the work included. As with the previous Ectopia effort, it's probably going to be logistically easier for one person (ie me) to burn all the copies and print all the booklets. That's what takes the time. We'd like copies ready for ectowest, but right now it looks like there will be only a limited number available by that time. We'll just have to see how it goes. Because of my recent surgery, I'm on medical leave from my job, so I have much more spare time than usual to work on such a project as this. But that will be coming to an end around 4/23, then its back to evenings and weekends. That's another reason I ask for as much as possible as soon as possible. FWIW, I'm working on a possible artwork page contribution, and I'm running late myself. Anyway, the buzzword is, the earlier the better. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 31 Mar 2001 01:38:41 -0500 From: DanStark Subject: Boa I know they were mentioned on the list at least once before, but I've just started hearing Boa this week. Great band! I'm trying to think of who the lead singer reminds me of, it's driving me crazy...maybe a cross between Imogen Heap and...Dido? There's some audio on their website, http://website.lineone.net/~boaweb/pages/home.html , and another song at http://ami.animenetwok.com/xelloskun/fool.zip . It seems like most people know of them from their inclusion on a Japanese amine soundtrack, but their new album, Twilight, is out this week in the US. Looks like I'll be on a mission to get it this weekend. :) Dan ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V7 #92 *************************
