I've been in touch with Wendy, she will be doing the pre-ecto-west house concert, ( and I'm waiting to hear from Shelly D. to see if there is room on the roster at the main show, don't think so though!). Sorry not to have published this yet, but I'm waiting to lock down the house venue, (as I am in the process of moving house) and need to get the new venue fully nailed in place. The house concert will be on the same weekend as the Kumbwa gig, day/time TBD, and will be in the Santa Cruz mountains and, in all probability, in a very beautiful Redwood grove. Additionally , I'm talking with a couple of coffeeshops in the SJ area to try and get her booked, hence no firm date yet on the house concert, as a coffeehouse gig will pay more and take precedence. I've copied Wendy on this email, feel free to contact her regarding another house concert, she's touring on a very limited budget, so I'm hoping other Ectophiles can help her with possible venues. I know Neal is also currently working on a gig for her; any updates out there? I believe Cheryl in San Francisco ( talicat@pacbell.net) was also considering offering a house concert for Wendy. If anyone out there has any ideas or venues please contact Wendy ( or me). For those of you unfamiliar with her work, you're in for a wonderfully witchy treat! Wendy will be here from June 3 to 5. She's doing a house concert tentatively on June 3. We're flexible with our date if it will help her get another local show. I've had no luck selling her to any local places though. I have one additional show I can do for her, at a funky local coffeeshop. Are your coffeeshops really more lucrative than house concerts Phil? We can typically get at least $200 plus good cd sales on a house concert. The local coffeeshops here typically just pay food, drink and tips. Starbucks goes all out and pays $50. I'd like to find her another decent paying show in NM, but am getting pretty discouraged. Looking forward to those other ectofest west details! BTW, I'm still taking orders for Wendy's CD's if anyone wants any. I don't have any in hand, but Wendy is supposed to send a box my way. Neal, the main place I've been in touch with out here has a steady roster of touring musicians, including a few whose names pop up on Ecto. The Espresso Gardens in San Jose, where I'm trying to book Wendy, has room for about 100, a great PA system, and pays 90% of the gate to the artists, less about $50-75 for local promotion, based on actual expenses. They LOVE music and musicians, and have made it an integral part of their business model, as a good performer can bring in a lot of people. The owner has been sick for the past few days so I've been unable to contact her regarding Wendy's visit. Their door ranges from $12-18, depending on the talent, so if we can get a good turnout, which I would assess at 50+ people, from the Ectopians and the local Pagans of which there are plenty up in the hills, paying, say $11 per head, Wendy should see over $400 for her performance, not including her CD sales - still not what she is worth, of course, but it sure beats Starbucks and their ubiquitous coffee-flavored-water beverage. I think due to the fact that Espresso Gardens in particular has worked very hard at its live music and now has a reputation, people come expecting a door fee on most nights. I think it takes a while for a shop to accomplish that, and it also needs a kind of philosphical shift of consciousness on the part of the owners. They look at a door charge and think it will scare away customers, so resultantly, all their talent works for free - said talent is largely not professional, but mostly local folks wanting to play - many of whom are not yet ready for the glittering lights of show business - the folks who are letting them play there don't do much in the way of auditioning, being either too busy, lazy or uncreative - Sturgeon's Law is resultantly invoked ("90% of everthing is crap") - and the shop never builds any sustainable credibility for providing good music and never gets any decent touring acts, who obviously don't want to play three hours for a sandwich, a latte and a hard-to-reach tip jar. If your local funky coffeehouse is amenable to charging at the door and you can guarantee a minimum attendance, you might have a better shot at it, good luck! Or try a church - it works for Kitka ;) Regards Phil - -----Original Message----- From: Neal Copperman [mailto:neal@swcp.com] Sent: Wednesday, March 28, 2001 5:08 PM Cc: ecto@smoe.org Subject: RE: Wendy rule in the SF area On Wed, 28 Mar 2001, Phil Hudson wrote: > I know Neal is also currently working on a gig for her; any updates out > there? Naw, I've talked to them. They don't want to change their philosophy, or the vibe of their place. The owner was at my last concert, so he saw the interest. he's been real supportive of the house concerts though. While they won't change to make their place more bookable for touring artists, he did offer me a free meal for each artist that came through. I thought this was a very nice, generous offer. >Or try a church - it works for Kitka ;) Still working on it. Will be talking to the Unitarians on Sunday. The Bowery Ballroom is on Delancey Street near Bowery in New York City. Martha will take the stage at 9:15pm. The fine New York ensemble Hem will follow. Ms. Elizabeth Harper starts the show at 8:30. I'm told this is accurate. *** This is the first time Martha has brought her full band for a set at this esteemed establishment. Your attendance is requested. If you have not seen Martha for some time, I highly recommend catching this show. If you have only read the same v, but out of date Time Out New York notice that has been running the last three years, you have some explaining to do. Time does not stand still, and neither does Martha. Although she does now and then do other things besides play the occasional New York show. April 12 - Silver Lake Lounge, LA April 21 - CIA Club, LA April 27 - Knitting Factory, Los Angeles April 28 - Lo Bero - Santa Barbara April 29 - Great American Music Hall, San Francisco Also, Martha will be touring as part of her brother Rufus' band throughout the spring. Oh, and I will remind you all again in a few days, Martha will be playing at Fez in NYC this Tuesday, April 3. Teddy Thompson plays at 9pm. Martha at 10pm.
