Subject: Sandy Dillon, Live. Very Live. Outside, it's one of the most miserable days I've ever seen --- bitterly cold, heavily grey, pouring cold, cold rain --- but I know my experience last night is going to help me through. Last night I got to see a Sandy Dillon gig. Can one be "Dilloned"? If so, then I most certainly have. I had the good fortune to pick up her most recent release, "East Overshoe" a couple of weeks ago (a mystery: apparantly it hasn't been released, yet) and found it to be pretty much like "Electric Chair", an exercise in style over substance, a pastiche of influences, particularly that of Tom Waits, whose vocal stylings she seems to have inherited. Live, she puts a whole new, refreshingly revelatory spin on it: It's pure, shining, theatre, borrowing as much from Screamin' Jay Hawkins as from anyone, the songs performed with such manic, body/face/voice-contorting gusto, with such a sense of vibrant fun, that it's hard not to get swept along and laugh your head off along with her. She had a full band, somehow crammed onto the small stage of the Borderline, and they reproduced the steamy, steaming, smokey, bluesy, swamp-drenched atmosphere of her albums perfectly. Whatever comparisons may have occurred to me before, watching her I could only think "Well, Tom Waites would never do THAT". Next week she plays in support of Cousteau at the Mean Fiddler. I'll be there. Ohhhhhhh, I'll be there. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 21 Mar 2001 18:28:41 +1000 From: "Heidi Maier" Subject: Re: kate bush article. meth wrote: > Thanks for posting this!! But this isn't really a female thing. Aren't there a handful of slots for male artists too? I mean, there are only so many slots at all, wether you are senstive singer/songwriter, metal/rap, grunge. I'm sure a lot of male artists see themselves pigeonholed in similarly infuriating ways. (And, of course, there is some value in comparisons if they actually make sense. I personally don't see how you can talk about early Tori without talking about Kate. Just like I doin't see how you can talk about early Happy without talking about Kate. And isn't he tried and true Kate crossed with Annie Lennox as good a way to get someone to try to listen to Happy as anything?) neal np: fomoflo no. 11 (Amy Denio project) nr: Ghostwritten - David Mitchell ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 21 Mar 2001 13:12:57 -0600 (CST) From: kerrywhite@webtv.net (kerry white) Subject: KaTe Bush Hi, I was hoping for something newer than Red Shoes mention. Sometime ago, I "rescued" THE WHOLE STORY and THE RED SHOES from pawnshops. For $1 plus postage the first to ask will get it/them. Postage, I have found out, includes $1.87 for a real CD mailer. Cheaper would be some bubble pack and a manila folder. I have been thinking that I might sell off my KaTe vinyl, including the 7" red Live in Japan and all titles except THE SENSUAL WORLD, which was one of my first CDs. bye, KrW I'm Peter Pan! Saturday I got a chance to swing by the record store and grab a copy of _Sunny Border Blue_. In short, Kristin's still as good as ever. _Sunny Border Blue_ isn't any radical departure in style; it's similar to _Sky Motel_ with its assortment of acoustic and electric guitar, piano, and other well-chosen backing instruments, but has its own unique flavor and a similar amount of variety between songs. Lately my favorite song has been "Summer Salt", but there are a lot of close seconds. If you're already a fan of Kristin Hersh, then _Sunny Border Blue_ is another heaping helping of her elliptical and evocative lyrics and smoky voice. If you haven't acquired a taste for Kristin Hersh yet, start working on it -- like some foreign cuisine, the flavors and textures are rich, salty, and strange, but after a while you find you crave it. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 21 Mar 2001 21:50:35 -0500 From: "Knight of Wands" Subject: Re: sunny border blue I agree! When you see my picture on the cover of the Rolling Stone, I suspect you will begin hearing rumors of Kate Bush being one of my primary sources. I would like to point out now while I am still talking to the hoi polloi that I began singing in public well before Tori and Kate. My rise to stardom began in 1968. (In fact, if Tori or Kate ever made it to Oklahoma, it would be safe to assume they caught one of my solos in church and appropriated my style.) Up until that time, my chief influences had been the singing of Elmer Fudd and Bugs Bunny. But since 1968 I have been sculpting a very personal voice with little input from other musicians. Well, except for the time in 1985 I was heavily into _Lionheart_. But I am not now, nor have I ever been a member of the Kate Bush fan club. Nor have I ever sung along with any songs on my cassette copy of _Lionheart_. Oh, and don't shake your head at the prospect of seventy and eighty year old rockstars. I for one will be listening to geezers of my own age well into my eighties. Bred, born, and raised on rock and roll, you don't stop rockin' in your sixties. I see a rosier prospect for Happy Rhodes than a gig in the Catskill. I see her performing in Shea Stadium with crowds of blissfully swaying old people, grooving to the latest slip/trip/dip hop hit. I was gratified to see Neal was listening to Brave Combo last night. Apparently the Brave Combo missionaries have made it as far as Albuquerque. My homeboys. I see them for free two times a year: in the first week of December when they perform Christmas music on the courthouse square. The weather can range from balmy to cold to arctic. The last couple of years their concerts have been rained out. (One year my musical buddies kept telling me we were playing on the square with Brave Combo. Imagine my disappointment when I spent an hour playing music in the cafe across the street from where Brave Combo was playing. I had had visions of opening for the band.) The other time we get to see BC is in about two weeks when they play at the Denton Jazz Festival. BC is the best dance band in the world. I, a dormant Southern Baptist, have to fight to keep my legs from breaking into sambas, polkas, and waltzes. I also benefit from their record collecting (I think). Occasionally I pick up polka records in the Goodwill that may have supplied inspiration to Brave Combo. Bye, Lyle n.p. _Lionheart_ "Inside, outside, straight up to paradise," I sing. Ooops! "Wow, wow, wow, wow, unbelievable." "Put your foot on the heartbrake." ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 21 Mar 2001 23:00:51 -0500 From: Philip David Morgan Subject: Jane Siberry update Good Evening: A very quick one, for Jane Siberry fans lucky enough to be in her hometown next week...
