They have three albums out: their debut, POP PA SVENSKA (Pop In Swedish -- yes, the whole thing is in Swedish), just reissued in the States by Minty Fresh; and two English language CDs, WHAT MAKES IT GO and THE GENIUS OF KOMEDA. Interestingly, the booklet of THE GENIUS OF KOMEDA depicts a number of other Komeda album covers, which may lead you to believe that the band has about a dozen other CDs available. Don't be fooled -- it's just a cute joke. I guess I would say that Komeda sound like a power pop band that was more heavily influenced by Can than the Beach Boys, if you can imagine such a thing. They are often compared in reviews to krautrock bands and Stereolab, but their songs are short and extremely catchy. They are led by singer Lena Karlsson, who has a deep, dusky voice. I've seen them live a couple of times, and they're a lot of fun. As for which CD to buy first -- well, take your pick. They're all good. They also have a track on the new Power Puff Girls CD. - --Sue ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Mar 2001 12:27:49 -0800 From: "Suzanna Otting" Subject: Re: kate bush article. Hi! Heidi reported: >i thought others would also be interested to know that salon, as part of its >ongoing "people" biography series, has published an article about kate bush. Thanks for posting this!! Interesting article, if only to note the author's sources, and what she did and didn't mention. The current (and former) Love-Hounds among us will recall that Fred Vermorel's _The Secret History of Kate Bush_ is pretty much universally reviled throughout Kate Bush fandom as having all the respectability and credence of a biography put out by the National Enquirer. And how could an article about Kate Bush mention every single one of her albums BUT _The Dreaming_?!? Also, once again we see the fallacious assertion that Tori Amos was influenced by KaTe. Sarah McLachlan: yes. She's stated as much. Somewhere around here we have an interview where she notes that she had to stop listening to KaTe after a while, because she was finding it hard to create her own music. (But she's not mentioned in the article anywhere.) Tori: absolutely not. She's admitted to once having a copy of _Hounds Of Love_ in her possession and listening to it a few times, but that's it. But, since she's a woman who plays the piano, the assumption still exists. (Though now Tori seems to have moved into the role of the one that everyone gets compared to, lately...) Still, it's frankly stunning to me that anyone out there in the media even remembers who Kate Bush is, so when all is said and done, I'm quite happy to see this article out there. Maybe some people will be intrigued enough to pick up the next cutout copy of _The Whole Story_ they find at the bottom of the bargain bins. ======================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth ======================================= ***!!!GO UCONN!!!*** ======================================= http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.ight "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Mar 2001 19:16:13 -0600 From: tenthvictim@mindspring.com Subject: Craig Hundley / aka Craig Huxley Since the Jabberwocky reference I made a while back had a Star Trek link and because Ms. Rhodes seems to be ODing on Star Trek movies of late, I thought I would drop some Star Trek trivia on you. Hard core Trekkies may know this already. The boy who played the telekinetic kid who was brought up by aliens and tried to take over the Enterprise on the original series is named Craig Hundley. He played in another original episode as Kirk's nephew. Anyway, he is a musician. I remember seeing his jazz trio at least twice on TV circa 1967-68. He was playing piano at the time. A year or so ago I stumbled across a CD titled "Genesis Project," performed by Craig Huxley, in a bargain bin. It was clearly electronic music and the story on the back about a jazz trio and musical and sound design contributions to _Star Trek I, II, and III_ led me to believe this was the kid I saw playing jazz on TV long ago. I don't know whether Hundley is his stage name or not; that would be my guess. The CD is a funky little thing from around 1984. The first song on the disc is the Star Trek theme done up as disco. I don't know why it wasn't a huge dance hit when it came out. For all I know it was. The beats on the musical pieces are a bit dated. This music seems to have been produced in the golden glow of the dying disco sun. The drums are more "Don't Rock the Boat" and "Love Boat" than the four on the floor disco of the 90's. When Huxley sticks to ambient music and leaves the beats behind, the music is much better, though there is something charming about the music with drums. The music itself is like Synergy/Larry Fast or Vangelis. Not bad. Not as go for the throat as much of today's synth music. That's all. Lyle w.p. The Individualist - TRI (Todd Rundgren). I don't know if I'll ever get used to Rundgren's rapping. He does it well, though. I usually lurk, but I had to say something: It's interesting how much misinformation there is circulating about certain things. The quotes referenced below indicate that Tori was influenced by Kate. Just like she was influenced by Led Zeppelin. And why not? How could a musician of Tori's caliber NOT be influenced by the music of others? She would have to be brain-dead. When you love and need music, you get preoccupied by it. And if you also MAKE music, those preoccupations will affect your creations. I don't think that's anything to be ashamed of. If an artist is being dishonest, it is obvious to everyone who's really capable of listening. Tori has never been dishonest, and the fact that she may have been influenced by people doesn't make her any less real or true. Kate has said that she was inspired/influenced by Elton John and Pink Floyd, and one could probably argue that in more recent years she has been influenced by Prince. That doesn't make her any less of an artist. It just makes her an artist who still finds inspiration in the work of others. Tori and Kate are artists of the same importance and influence. Tori was just born later than Kate, so she heard Kate and was inspired rather than the other way around. Tori is quoted as saying that "Hounds of Love" changed her life. That is what music is for. What a boring world this would be if we didn't influence and inspire one another. I've attached a photo of Tori holding a Kate album. The album cover doesn't look familiar to this die-hard Kate AND Tori fan, indicating that Tori's collection reaches further than that of a casual listener.
