Sadly I didn't get to see either of them but I managed to have great time anyway, and when I got back I actually found I had a bit of cash left over. Well, that was easily taken care of - I just ordered a bunch of CDs... The first one to arrive was Ekova, "Space Lullabies and Other Fantasmagore", bought on the combined strength of Ectophiles' recommendation, presence of Lisa Germano and the visit to their website (http://www.ekovaonline.com) I think it was Meredith who said their site might not work very well for those not blessed with broadband connection. Well, don't let that put you off! True, it takes a while to load, but it's all done with Flash so once loaded things work just fine. I liked their site, cute and slightly different... As an aside, I've become a great fan of Flash - it's one technology that is fairly bandwidth-effective, consistently delivers attractive and interesting results and to my best recollection has NEVER crashed my browser - which is a lot more than I could say about Java applets for example... One word of warning: if you don't have Flash installed, I couldn't see any alternative means of access to their site. I suppose there is still a chance this is handled automatically but I didn't investigate any further. No warnings when it comes to the music, though! I'll give it 9/10. Varied, fresh yet confident - I love it. There are strong middle-eastern influences, and I'm sure they can be compared to Dead Can Dance. They might also appeal to the fans of Land Of The Blind, and at times I thought I could even hear touches of Jorane - but what I heard most of all is similarity to some Delerium tracks. To quote from the blurb on the cover, "Ekova creates a dream world, the folk music of techno-global future"... OK, I'll buy that. As for Lisa Germano, her name is listed in the credits, but so far (admittedly after only one listening) I couldn't point to any moment where I could say, "ah, this is Lisa Germano!". Don't expect it to be anything like Lisa's solo records - it really isn't. Reading the list of additional musicians I noticed another name of interest: Carmen Rezzo. He was one half of Povi, the duo who in 1999 released (through Nettwerk) "Life in Volcanoes" - an excellent recording, yet sadly overlooked even here on Ecto. The other half of Povi was Crista Calero, Australian and my personal Goddess - that might explain my interest :) As another aside, I visited Nettwerk's site a while back and it appears Povi has been dropped from their roster. I don't know what the story is, but at this point I'm prepared to take back anything good I ever said about Nettwerk! - ------------------------------------------------------ They will do whatever we let them get away with. - -- Joseph Heller - ------ http://www.zip.com.au/~afries/spot.php3 ------- ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 15 Mar 2001 08:54:53 -0500 From: recount chocula Subject: Re: Back with Ekova when we last left our heroes, Andrew Fries exclaimed: >Reading the list of additional musicians I noticed another name of interest: >Carmen Rezzo. But, artists must evolve, and Over The Rhine seems to have done so with this work. After the first full listening to the album I found myself hunt-and-pecking for particular tracks which stuck to my mind. I am still trying to decide how I would rank this album, but at this point I can say that it is definitely OTR stock. Perhaps a bit more poppish than "alternative" (whatever that means anymore). But also fuller and more "evolved". She definitely sounds like she'd be someone I liked. By the way, I picked up the Sirina Simoon CD from Amazon--I haven't quite figured out what I think of it yet. It didn't overwhelm me--but I think it will grow on me. It's a little less melodic and a little more rhythmic than I like--but she's definitely got an interesting voice. Their sound is somewhat like Basque's with a few more instruments in the mix. Other things I've been listening to--Chris Wilson's two CD album--The Long Weekend. He's an Austrailian I saw at Folk Alliance--with one of the best, biggest voices I've heard in a long time. I thought two CDs might get a bit much of his bluesy harmonica playing style, but the album is incredibily varied. "Heaven's Thief" sounds almost like Harold Budd- - -with his lovely vocals coming in over the glass-like piano about 3 minutes into the song. I highly recommend this one. The rest of the songs run the gamut from rock, folk, blues, spoken-word, etc. I've also been listening to Hand to Mouth's "weightless" CD a bit--really lovely sound, full of quiet intensity and some great lyrics. Grace Hearn doesn't have the strongest, most powerful voice, but she certainly uses the voice she has to great advantage. n.p. First, a positive little piece on how music that typically flies under the radar can be brought to the masses by one music-loving person at an ad agency (and naturally touches on the whole Nick Drake/Pink Moon phenomenon) and on what it means for a small band to "sell out" (focusing on Apples In Stereo). Perhaps it's time to dig out the list of potential pairings of products to Happy's songs from a couple of years ago. ;) >From http://www.nytimes.com/2001/03/11/magazine/11SELLOUT.html (free registration required if you haven't already...) "But increasingly, agencies are looking beyond middle-of-the-road pop like Sting's and building brand identity for their clients with hip curios like the Apples. If you want to hear interesting, ambitious, challenging pop music these days, the place to turn is not mainstream radio but television -- and not MTV but commercials for establishment products like banks, phone companies and painkillers." ... "Alternative musicians, once shielded by the cocoon of their modest ambitions, suddenly face a new field of opportunity and of ethical quandary. Putting an obscure song in an ad may be different from using a well-known hit, which hints of endorsement. But it still confers the music's flavor to a brand or product." ... "Again, the fee was small, but with their share, Robert and Hilarie were able to buy the baby furniture after all and to shed a small slice of financial worry. Their son, Maxwell Alexander Schneider, born Christmas Day, has a nice new crib and parents not too stressed, for the moment, by the call of their work. Perhaps a few of their fans won't like it. But it was time to grow up and out of it. If this was selling out, they were ready to buy in." And in stark contrast, a story dealing with what it takes to get a song played on a commercial radio station. Makes me want to fast forward a few years when every "radio" will have an ethernet jack in it to allow "tuning" to streaming digital audio stations... http://www.salon.com/ent/feature/2001/03/14/payola/index.html "If the talk proves to be true, the move would dramatically alter radio's landscape in several ways -- and raise new questions about the effect of the nation's payola laws at a time when the Federal Communications Commission has seemingly given up on regulating radio." ... "With that kind of clout, Clear Channel, through Tri State, could institute national buys for new singles. "Labels would pay $100,000 or $200,000 to get a single added to all the Clear Channel format stations one week," suggests one radio source. "And if they don't pay, there is no chance in hell they're getting that song on the radio without Tri State. If it's not on the list, it's not on stations." " bob np. This is something I've struggled with. On the one hand, if I hear, say, a Smiths song in a car commercial, I shake my head in cynical disbelief. But if I hear, say, a Susan McKeown song in a car commercial, I jump up and down and say, "Yay!!!" What's the difference? I guess in the case of the Smiths, I know they're not hurting for cash, so my attitude is, What's the point? But in Susan's case, I know that the money she's getting from the Audi and Jaguar ads are going to help her make a living as a musical artist, and as a result we'll get more recordings from her, so in my view that's nothing but a good thing. ======================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth ======================================= http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 15 Mar 2001 23:31:17 EST From: Gordoja@aol.com Subject: The soundtrack to brackets imploding Meth wrote: << >> I am wondering what the appropriate song would be for a bracket implosion...I think I am being set up for tomorrow as mine hasnt blown up yet (and my old boss thought I was silly for picking kent state, utah state, AND georgia state)...A pox on him...But the fall will be harder tomorrow...quick and painless like meth is much better :) n.p.
