Her voice is velvet, and the instrumentation on her cut CUTTHROAT STANDARDS AND BLACK POP is spectacular. Lemme know if you're interested. Dont miss her she's amazing. Wish I could be there. I got an advanced copy, without any packaging, at Folk Alliance. It's amusing that today is when I finally dropped it in a player, cause today is the official release date. I've been listening while working, and found it to be quite good. It's got a lot more of a band sound than Good Dog, Bad Dog, though it still has some of those spare, floating songs that so caught my fancy on the last album. The band sounds are a bit more rhythmic, sort of a subdued trip-hoppy kind of rhythm running behind them. Then again, mayb that's just all I noticed when I wasn't really listening :) Just thought I'd mention it on it's birthday. Their a small organization and seem to do a pretty good job of taking care of business. I'm sure they'll make good with you if there's a problem. Did anyone pre-order a >copy? yup. linford detweiler sent out an update about that yesterday. some packages were delayed for various reasons but all should have been sent out by yesterday if i remember correctly (i tossed the note so i can't check it). ours hasn't arrived yet. no matter, i'll be listening to the soft boys re-issue and the young fresh fellows/minus 5 album for the next few days anyways. one amusing note: it took linford and karin bergquist almost two days to sign all the pre-orders. oy! woj ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Mar 2001 14:55:57 -0700 From: "Bill" Subject: Re: New Over The Rhine On Tue, 13 Mar 2001 13:03:21 -0700 (MST), Neal Copperman wrote: >Aw, give them a break. But no sweat, maybe it was fate working on my behalf and they will send me some extra goodies :) Just like the kind Mr. Bartlett did when my order of Happy's _Warpaint_ took a little detour in its path to my hands... And, hearing Karin sing does make me want to moan... there must be some faith-related connection somewhere in there... :) Still joyful about music and ecto musicians, - - Bill G. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Mar 2001 20:15:08 -0800 From: "abaton" Subject: Marianne Nowottny at Tonic Marianne Nowottny will be performing this Saturday at TONIC in NYC. For those of you in the area this is a wonderful opportunity to catch this artist in a space where she adores performing. Tonic has great acoustics and a Grand piano which Marianne will put to good use. Hope to see you there. Mark @ abaton@crystal.palace.net The press release: Sat, Mar 17 > >> Marianne Nowottny at 8:00pm, $10 > New Jersey teen Marianne Nowottny returns to Tonic this evening with her torchy resin voice, off-kilter harmonics and Radio Shack keyboard. Nowottny is able to glide through scale modulation seemingly effortlessly, stopping at random quarter-tones and angular intervals that are unique and hyper-personal. Her song compositions, which explore multi-layers of sound and textures, can be compared to the early electronic music experiments of John Pfeiffer or the pop-music simulations of Brian Eno. "Marianne Nowottny is a delicately balanced combination of warped teenage nihilism, otherworldly visitation and sheer joy-in-creation." David Keenan The Wire > >> RonRuins at 10:00pm, $10 > With Yoshida Tatsuya (drums, vocals), Sasaki Hisashi (bass, vocals) & Ron Anderson (guitar, vocals). For more than a decade, the Ruins have been one of the most consistently exciting groups out of the Japanese underground. Known worldwide for their complex multi-layered compositions and dynamic live performances, the Ruins' ground-breaking music starts and stops on a dime, with the precision of a watch and the power of a sledgehammer. Tonight they are augmented by Molecules guitarist Ron Anderson, who has previously toured with Ruins drummer/vocalist Yoshida Tatsuya. > >> Elysian Fields at Midnight, $5 > > > > ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ > TONIC > ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ > 107 Norfolk Street > (Between Delancey & Rivington) > 212-358-7501 / http://www.tonic107.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Mar 2001 22:40:34 -0600 From: tenthvictim@mindspring.com Subject: O Frabjous Day, Kalooh Kalay Howdy, Don't know what ya'll are talking about tonight, but I know what I'm talking about. It turned out to be a fine day. First, it was seventy degrees and the sun shone warmly on the new bluebonnets in the farmer's yard down the road. Spring seems to have hit North Texas. The trees are blooming a nice greenish-white color and the redbuds are starting to show their pink blossoms. The sun was a bright mediterranean white and the salty zephyrs blew in from the archipelagos. Oops, wrong country. The sun was its usual North Texas self. Second, I popped 256 Megs of RAM into my computer without losing an eye, hand, or short circuiting my cyberfriend. I had hit 16 tracks and more with Magix Music Maker and my computer was bogging down. Even my MIDI tracks were stumbling. The result of the extra RAM is: Magix is going strong and my SW1000XG sound card sounds great. I used to read reviews of the SW1000XG and scratch my head when the reviewer said how wonderful the card sounded. It always sounded flat to me. No movement in the voices. Not much spatial depth. Well that stuff was there, it just needed more processing power to become evident. Is that possible or am I deluding myself? Third, Auntie Social Music sent me copies of _Rearmament_ and _Ecto_ today. I opened my mail box to find that my friendly local postman had wedged the CDs into the mailbox so tightly I didn't think I was going to get them out without breaking a CD case. Happy or her partner in crime (Sarah?) had stamped an alien on the package and the alien was saying, "Happy likes disco." That was a response to my remark in the letter ordering the CDs that I would gladly buy a sampling disc filled with Happy vocals. I hinted that I would be using the vocals to make disco music and I hoped Happy liked disco. Mostly, I was thinking of the market out there for dance music. DJs and producers will love putting her voice into all those offshoots of disco being made out there in danceland. (They also sent me the MWBT mouse pad. Very colorful. It can only add a touch of class to this mess of a computer room.) I especially liked the health food store grocery bag used for packing material. Very classy. I think we need to suggest to Happy what vocal phrases to put on a sampling disc. The ever-popular "Get up!" , "Get down!" would be nice. "Put your hands in the air!" Some James Brown squeals as interpreted by Happy Rhodes. An "Oh, baby." I must confess, I lifted an "Oh, baby" from the Linda Carter record (yes, she sings). Melts my butter. However, I would never use it on anything offered to the public. I think it would be easily recognized and LCs husband is an attorney or congressman or some such and lawyers would be pounding on my door. How about a "We're all ecto!" Sorry, I'm having a small manic phase and I could go on. But I suppose I'm only entertaining myself. So goodbye. P.S. The spell checker wanted to change ecto to recto. Is my computer trying to tell us something? Perhaps it applies only to me. Lyle now echoing in my head: Ecto (Very nice. Now I see the bridge from _Rhodes I_ and _II_ to _War Paint_.) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 14 Mar 2001 00:30:27 -0500 From: meredith Subject: Re: Marianne Nowottny at Tonic Hi!
