I need to get confirmation from Wendy, but I expect she will be sending Zero Deity World Between Worlds They are going to be $15 a disc, plus $2 for postage (within the US, somewhat more if I have to mail them internationally). They're older, but they're still in fine shape! The new album, *Tuscany,* is already out in Japan. They're working on US and UK releases, but they don't know when. (Yes, a NEW Renaissance album -- with material co-written by Michael Dunford and Annie Haslam.) And yes, Annie still can hit all the high notes! The concert blew me away. I will write more later. I almost didn't attend the show. My boyfriend's best friend died of breast cancer earlier last week, and I felt guilty about going to see live music at the end of what was a very tough week. I only went at his insistence. Annie Haslam is a breast cancer survivor. Watching her perform and remembering the woman I know who died last week made me rather teary-eyed. As previously noted here, ectofest 2001 is set for August 25 in Danbury, CT. Chuck and I are working on getting the roster and funding (more on that later) together. One of the artists we really want to present this year is Jorane. Thanks to Neal's big mouth at Folk Alliance , she and her "people" are interested too. The only catch is, in order for it to make sense for her to make the trip down from Montreal, she would need to set up some other dates along the way. This is where we need to consult the ecto oracles. Following the New York State Thruway down to where it intersects with Interstate 84, what are the performance possibilities for an artist like Jorane? This trip includes the Albany and Woodstock areas, and of course there's Connecticut, western Massachusetts, and NYC areas as well (though she is currently putting together a NYC-area tour for the end of September). Please e-me directly with any thoughts y'all might have. One of our other goals with Jorane was to have her come to New Mexico. They are interested in doing west coast shows, as well as heading across country. I don't think they have a clear idea of what they really want to do yet, but I would certainly encourage people to be thinking about it. I've been talking with her manager, and hope to have a better idea of what they want to do. As a bit of background, Jorane prefers to do band shows. That's a 4-piece plugged in band with a full drum kit. They also have a full multi-media show that they have put together in support of 16mm. I'm still awaiting details on what that actually means in terms of show requirements. (They don't have to do the multi-media show, but obviously they would like to.) Meth, Sebastion said he was having trouble getting in touch with you. I sent him your e-mail address again, but you might want to drop him a note. >This is where we need to consult the ecto oracles. It's that time again - we are now accepting reservations for our next living room concert, featuring Anne O'Meara Heaton and Teddy Goldstein. This will take place on Sunday, April 1 at 4:00 pm (no fooling!). Anne Heaton is familiar to many ectophiles, in particular since her wonderful performance at ectofest 2000 last year. Teddy Goldstein, like Anne is a member of the "Live From New York" crew that has been cris-crossing the country for the past year or so. He is a good guitar player and singer, and a really sweet guy. There are sound samples and info at each artist's web site: www.teddygoldstein.com and www.anneheaton.com. As always, the suggested donation is $10. Our reservation lists have been getting bigger faster lately, so please get your reservation in early. I had a hard time finding out anything more about her since everything I found was in Spanish. Lo and behold, I picked up this week's New Yorker and found a full-page photo of Julieta Venegas as well as a one-column article, which follows. She will be touring the United States (including New York City) in April. To go off on a little bit of a tangent, I think that some of the best alternative music I've heard in the past several years comes from south of the border, including such groups as Cafe Tacuba in Mexico and Karnak in Brazil. I've also enjoyed becoming acquainted with Tom Ze's music, and I'm glad that David Byrne's label was able to stage a comeback for him in the United States. - --Valerie Richardson *************************************** From The New Yorker, March 12, 2001 By Ben Greenman MEXICAN RADIO As a child in Tijuana, Julieta Venegas picked up alternative rock stations from Southern California, and she soon found herself seduced by English-language artists ranging from Lou Reed to Depeche Mode. On last years "Bueninvento," Venegas returned the favor. With contributions from the best altemative-rock sidemen in both the United States and Mexico, the record, Venegass second solo album, is a superb collection of infectious, angular compositions that recall introspective singer - -songwriters such as Suzanne Vega and spikier artists such as Fiona Apple and Bjork. Venegas favors quirky arrangements -- her songs are enlivened by junk-yard percussion, bursts of guitar, and mournful strains of accordion and her lyrics, even untranslated, suggest the application of an analytical mind to the labyrinth of romance. As a result of "Bueninvento," the thirty-year-old Venegas has become one of the brightest lights of Mexican rock At the moment, she is preparing for an American mini-tour to promote "Escena Alterlatina," a collection of songs by Latin rock and hip-hop acts which includes a swirling new Venegas composition, "Me Van a Matar." (The tour visits Los Angeles and San Francisco before concluding at the Mercury Lounge in New York City, on April 3rd.) And shes still listening to American music. People think that the accordion in my music comes from Mexican folk music, from Nortena, she says. But one of the main reasons I started using it was because of Joe Jackson-I saw a video of a concert where he played accordion, and it seemed cool to me. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 11 Mar 2001 18:47:01 -0800 (PST) From: kitty kat Subject: The Be Fives This is where a friend of mine picked up the CD: http://www.rubberboots.com/bmphotos.htm I think I'll get it, as well as having already ordered the Mira Furlan CD (which I hadn't known about). - -K - ------------- Yesterday at dawn, my friend said, How long will this unconsciousness go on?
