Last night The Nields did two shows at the Iron Horse in Northampton, recording a live album. Naturally, woj and I were there. (There are two basic rules for Nields fandom if you live in the Northeast: 1.) *Never* miss a night at the Iron Horse, and 2.) *Always* go to both shows.) For the first show we were sitting up in the loft, right in the corner by the stairs. This turned out to be the perfect spot from a sound standpoint, although there was a pole that restricted my view somewhat. I didn't really care about that, though. This was a more restrained show, since the tables were out and everyone was having dinner. For the second show, they moved the tables off the floor in front of the stage, so I was able to assume my usual spot right at Nerissa's feet. The sound wasn't very good from there, but as usual being so close to the stage enhanced the experience so the sound didn't much matter. The performances of the songs were great, though Katryna sounded a bit breathless at times -- I guess trying to sing when you're 7+ months pregnant will do that to you. I think the album will end up sounding really good. The band was in a very goofy mood, perhaps even goofier than usual. Example: I can say with certainty that "Superhero Soup" will *not* be on the album, since they only played it during the early show, and in the middle they had to stop because they were all laughing so hard (during the "Baba O'Reilly" homage section of the song, Nerissa sang: "Out here in the fields/I am one of the Nields/I have never been on Napster/I don't have to fight/To prove I'm right/I wish someone would give me a hamster", and that was that :). There were other side-splitting moments too, usually involving Katryna saying or doing something exceedingly silly. In particular, when they decided to do "Snowman" for an encore at the late show, she had a Moment when she strapped on Nerissa's guitar and then realized she couldn't hold the guitar in front of her belly and reach the microphone to sing at the same time. She finally got it situated, but the period of time when she was trying to figure it out was pretty hilarious. Throughout it all David N. had his digital camera, and he was snapping away. He got one really good shot of her using her feet to tilt the mic stand toward her face. I suggested they use that for the album cover. ;> There were special guests on stage all night, too. During the early show, Alan Blumgarten played keyboards. I think that's the first time the band has had a keyboard on stage with them. Mostly he was providing a Hammond B3 sound, which worked well on the few songs he sat in on. I had thought the piano was there for a version of "100 Names", but they ended up doing the guitar version of the song instead. This ended up pleasing me, since I can't imagine anyone but Susan Werner playing the piano part on that song. During the late show, Gideon Freudmann played electric cello, as only he can -- I keep meaning to go to one of his solo gigs, and now I'm even more serious about it. During sound check he was jamming with Dave Hower and David Nields, and it was *great*. The boys all jammed at the end of the late show's main set, too, as they closed it out with "Goodbye", and the song went on for a good five minutes after Katryna and Nerissa and David N. left the stage, leaving Freudmann to improv with Dave Chalfant and Hower for a little while. Ben Demerath and Max (argh, I'm blanking on his last name, but he used to be in a band called The Maggies) also popped up on stage, one during each show to play bass on the encore: "Love Shack". Yes, the B-52's song The Nields were born to cover. I've long thought that David Nields and Fred Schneider were separated at birth anyway, and this proved it. Plus, Katryna and Nerissa sounded *exactly* like Kate and Cindy. Dave Chalfant took the lead guitar on this one, and it positively rocked. :) But all that aside, the guest appearance I'm sure everyone is going to be talking about was Dar Williams, who showed up toward the end of the late show. She had a solo gig in Hartford earlier in the evening, and she must've hauled ass up I-91 to get there in time. As one may expect, the place went completely nuts when she stepped on the stage. She also provided the night's funniest moment: she stopped when she saw Katryna perched on her bar stool, pointed at her considerable middle in mock surprise, and said, "What's this?!" Then she turned around to all the guys, pointing. "Which one of you did this??" Dave C. sheepishly ducked his head and said "It was me," and she glared at him, then turned back to Katryna. "I leave you alone for one minute, and look what happens!!" :) She sang a rather odd backup part on "Jennifer Falling Down", btw. I'm sure it's going to end up on the album - I want to hear it with everything mixed correctly. It took a while for her vocals to be audible in the house mix. The number of full-band gigs is winding down: Katryna's last gig before her maternity leave is a Probe show on March 23rd. During the down time, Nerissa is going to do some solo gigs. She was even the opening act for the early show, doing one song before Katryna joined her for a few more to precede the boys taking the stage. I hope at least one of those gigs is around here - I'd be interested to see whether she can carry an entire set by herself, with no one to harmonize with. All in all, it was a very good night, and much fun was had. Well worth getting home at 2 am. But really, a night with The Nields is never anything less. +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | | *** TRAJECTORY, the Veda Hille mailing list: *** | | *** http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html *** | +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 04 Mar 2001 22:50:52 -0500 From: meredith Subject: ekova Hi! Recently I mentioned an album by a group called _Ekova_, "Space Lullabies And Other Fantasmagore", which I just received in the mail. I heard most of it played on WPKN the week before (on Valerie's husband Rod Richardson's show, "Radio Nothing"), and the minute he posted his playlist from the show I was all over it. (Damn amazon.com and their one-click ordering! That doesn't help EWS at *all*! :) It's an addictive album, from a group that is from Europe and has a ton of Middle Eastern influences. Basically, their music sounds like Dead Can Dance, Ofra Haza, and Big Hat all at once. Some songs are straight out of the European underground dance scene, while others are reminiscent of Jorane, with invented-language utterances in place of lyrics. There's even a Pentangle song, "Cruel Sister" (which clocks in at over ten minutes, but you don't even notice the time going by). Dierdre DuBois, the singer has a gorgeous voice. I would file her voice in the same folder as Ofra Haza, Lisa Gerrard, Liz Frasier, and Jorane. Plus, Lisa Germano plays violin on a couple tracks! Extra bonus points for that. The album is on Six Degrees Records, which has a "travel series" of music that has pan-global influences and fuses different traditions together into something entirely new. I'd say that's a fair description of what Ekova is doing. Info and sound samples are at http://www.sixdegreesrecords.com/travelseries/artists/spacelullabies/index.h tm, and http://www.ekovaonline.com/ (though take care, I have a feeling their official site isn't going to work well on a dial-up connection). +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | | *** TRAJECTORY, the Veda Hille mailing list: *** | | *** http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html *** | +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 04 Mar 2001 23:06:47 -0500 From: meredith Subject: wendy wall's new album Hi! Yes, you read that right ... Wendy Wall has a new album! It's called _Two Birds_, and is available on her web site, http://www.wendywall.com. She was kind enough to send me a copy after reading my comments about her first (and only other) album on the Ectophiles' Guide, which came out almost 12 years ago now. Since it's an independent release it sounds less produced than her debut, and it falls very firmly into the contemporary singer/songwriter category, where her first one was more in the Julia Fordham vein. It's quite good. Her voice has changed a little bit over time: it's not as rich as before, but it's no less lovely to listen to. There aren't any tour dates on her site yet, but she told me there will be soon. I'm really looking forward to seeing what she's like in live performance. It's kind of cool to see someone who had completely dropped off the radar coming back with a new release. It occurred to me while I was reading meth's post that in English the plural of family names ending in "s" is formed by adding "es": so the Jones family are the Joneses, and a bunch of people named Ross are the Rosses. So more than one Nields must be the Nieldses. Ergo, the band name "The Nields" actually refers to a single Nields. Ah, the age-old "what's a Nield" question. :) Actually, three of the five of them are Nields(es). Katryna, Nerissa, and David all have the surname Nields. I think they just made the group decision that "The Nields" sounded better than "The Nieldses" and that's that. I did have a classmate in high school whose surname was Nield, singular. I heard Holly Cole's version of "I Can See Clearly Now" for a car commercial. It was an american car, perhaps a ford? Eliza Carthy is on tour this month in the US and will be hitting the Paradise in Boston on April Fools Day. No joke. Strangely enough, her dad, Martin Carthy, hits Club Passim this month. I had a wonderful time last wednesday at a packed Club Passim show featuring Rachael Sage and Trina Hamlin. I've been skipping concerts lately because of apathy and fatigue, but this show reminded me of how energizing a good performance can be. Thanks Rachael (and band) for such a faboo show. Oh, yeah, and Trina rocked my house too. Go berklee-ites. Speaking of berklee-ites and berklee, Melissa Ferrick has a new record out on her own label. It's a recording of her show last year at the Berklee Performance Center (a show i was at). I wonder if they included her banter about being able to hear radio stations through her monitor wedges. Jonatha Brooke's new cd was produced by Bob Clearmountain. Listening to how layered the sounds are and how much stuff is crammed into each song, I can dig why he's such a sought after producer/engineer. And, I like the album. Especially the first several cuts. Paul Kim ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V7 #66 *************************
