Susan McKeown's connections to the Pacific Northwest make it probably the second-best place to live if you're one of her fans. This is the second time in a year she's made it out here to Eugene, and since the last time she was here was the day before Thanksgiving when my holiday plans interfered with seeing her, I'm glad she came back so soon. She had a somewhat modified Chanting House lineup with her, with Jeff Allen on bass, someone whose name I can't remember but who was identified as a Portland native on drums, and Jon Spurney on guitar. She did her fairly standard assortment of songs from various albums, covers like "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face", "Son of a Preacher Man", and "Who Knows Where the Time Goes", and a new song called "South" that definitely had a certain moody Ecto sound to it. She also mentioned that they were in the Portland airport this morning and felt the earthquake; she had just picked up some coffee and when she asked one of her companions if he had felt the shaking, he told her it was just the coffee. During the encore, Jon Spurney said it was the first earthquake he had felt, and made the amusing but embarrassing admission that he happened to be standing in front of a urinal right at the moment of the quake. I can't think of a better place to be if you're going to be having your first earthquake experience. I don't know where they're going next, but west-coasters should definitely be on the lookout. Susan's in as fine a form as ever. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 1 Mar 2001 01:42:33 -0600 (CST) From: kerrywhite@webtv.net (kerry white) Subject: Tim Powers' Declare Hi, Declare is 90% John Le Carre' spy novel and 10% 'Tim Powers stuff'. In December she released a new album called "Paraxeno Fos" (Strange light). It has new songs from a variety of composers (including her rendition of another Loreena McKennitt song, "Fila me Fila me" which is the first track and is incredible) produced in the tradition of Di'Efhon by Nikos Antypas. She played a series of live shows in Piraeus in December and January, but I couldn't find anyone willing to deal with the parking situation and so missed the opportunity to see her. She is now playing in Thessaloniki. Eleftheria is releasing a new original album this month called "Ekpompi" (broadcast), with lots of interesting collaborators. I believe you can see a video of one of her new songs on her website www.arvanitaki.gr Eleftheria was featured as a guest vocalist in "Mikres Istories" (Short Stories), a mostly instrumental album by Evanthia Reboutsika. That album is absolutely incredible and is one of my favorite albums of all time. Another artist worth mentioning is Kalliopi Vetta, whose album "Sto Fos" (to the light) is pretty good. She has an amazing voice and also does a Loreena cover ("Marrakesh Night Market") which is very similar to the original. I think Loreena must make a bunch of royalties from covers of her songs by greek female singers. :-) If you are interested in male vocalists, Yannis Kotsiras (www.kotsiras.gr) is a new talent. His latest album "Einai diki mas i zoi mas" (Our life is ours) was composed by Evanthia Reboutsika with lyrics by Aris Davarakis (a modern Greek poet/lyricist). It is quite mellow and if you like Evanthia Reboutsika's music, you will really enjoy it. I have also recently discovered two Greek bands that are ectoworthy (in the same way that REM and Moby can be considered ecto). Pix Lax is a folk-rock band with incredibly powerful melodies and nice vocals, while Stereo Nova plays electronica with a mood similar to Moby's play (only recorder 5 years earlier). Some of their tracks are classics. Check out Stereo Nova's "New Life 705" (or Nea Zoi) and Pix Lax's "Epapses agapi na thimizeis" or "Giati" on napster and you'll see what I mean. Anyway, enough for now. Angelos ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 1 Mar 2001 09:40:21 -0800 (PST) From: Michael Bowman Subject: Re: to the northwestern US ectophiles... Seems I have this little problem in my neck and some nice doctors have offered to relieve me of some of my bone and disc material (the vertebrae kind of disc, not the compact variety). Fortunately I'm already in a blue funk so don't feel any worse after reading it than I did before. Maybe just a bit. Just a few observations. Sounds like her life could have been happier with antidepressants. If any of you out there have winter blues, get checked out. Could just be low levels of serotonin. My company is working with another company (NeoRx) on Skeletal Targeted Radiotherapy for bone cancer. The trials they have done so far suggest there is a 50% remission rate for bone cancer patients. If cancer patients out there can hang on another couple of years, the survival rates for bone cancer should shoot up. Tomorrow night I go to the Caravan of Dreams to watch my guitar teacher's band record a live CD. His band has some ghastly punning name (bertha coolidge - Birth of Cool, get it?)and consists of vibes, bass, drums, and guitar. Paul has a master's in jazz guitar from the University of North Texas, so I'm expecting some exciting guitar work. He can play just about any style of music I throw at him. He is a shining example to all of us oldies because he started out playing in rock and roll bands, decided to become a jazzer, and got his degree at a fairly advanced age. Early thirties, maybe. Now he eats and sleeps guitar and music theory. Okay. Enough. Bye, Lyle n.r. _Robbers_. Chrisopher Cook. My cousin's first novel (mystery). Available at a bookstore near you. I'll give you a review (biased, of course) when I finish the last page. Now to start working on December, January, and February and my 2000 year end report. - --Neile Terami Hirsch All Girl Band I have listened to this disc with embarrassing frequency. I just happened to run across her sound files at CD Baby, and was intrigued enough to order the cd. It is full of interesting sounds. If you're interested in weird timings and off-beat songs, you might like this as much as I do. There are a few Tori-influenced soundings here, but she gets beyond that into her own individual music. Anyway, I like her a lot so far. Anyone still interested in hearing another girl with piano (at least mostly--there's lots more instrumentation, too) might want to give Terami Hirsch a listen. Her work is a captivating mix of sounds, strong piano, interesting vocals, and intriguing lyrics. There are sound samples at www.cdbaby.com/hirsch and www.terami.com Jorane _16mm_ I have to say that if anyone is going to try Jorane for the first time, do it with _vent fou_ rather than this one. As her comments about it have said, these are not really lyrics but vocalizations. The sound is more towards the loose/unstructure/experimental than the song-oriented pieces in _vent fou_. In fact, once or twice I found myself thinking that moments here seemed to me a little self-indulgent. Funny, because despite its extravagances _vent fou_ never seemed that way to me. I guess what I'm saying is that I'm happy I have this and I will listen to it but I'm guessing that people who are song-oriented won't like this so very much. I can tell I'll never like it much as I adore _vent fou_. It's much more abstract. Susan McKeown _Lowlands_ Susan McKeown's albums have tended to grow on me over time, but I loved this album from first listen. Her versions of traditional material are powerful throughout this album. It's truly amazing to me that with this album I'm appreciating her more and more and starting to make what for me is the ultimate comparison for a traditional singer and singer-songwriter--to Sandy Denny. Sandy Denny was a fine songwriter in her own right but was also an incomparable interpreter of traditional (and other neo-traditional and poprock) songs, bringing them to new life. This album shows Susan McKeown has the same power. If you get any Susan McKeown or any traditional album, get this one. Hannah Fury, _Soul Poison ep_ and _The Thing That Feels_ From the moment I first heard Hannah Fury's music I was stuck on it. Hannah Fury is like a Goth (yes, let's face it, this is the comparison she's going to get most often) Tori Amos. She has the piano chops of "Tear in Your Hand" and "Icicle" which is the Tori sound she's most like. But the lyrics are different--utterly, delightfully eerie and haunted. Hannah Fury's is an individual melding of the Gothic with Tori-like emotionality and Kate-like storytelling. _Soul Poison_ this is a strong debut, and is only slightly inferior to The Thing That Feels. I agree with Jeff Hanson that it is reminiscent of "Hammer Horror"-era Kate Bush--in fact, I think that is it's best comparison. Strong songwriting and vocals. Highly recommended. _The Thing that Feels_ is utterly amazing--particularly the section of songs based on Gregory Macguire's _Wicked_--really evocative of the feel of the novel for me and besides that, they're fine songs on their own. A strong collection and highly recommended for anyone who likes the idea of a Gothic Tori. Collide, chasing the ghost Even though woj recommended it and I liked the samples I heard I found that I couldn't listen to this disc all the way through at once. There's some kind of weird repetitive style that I just overload on. Elysian Fields Queen of the Meadow I like it a lot. More like their second disc than their first ep. PJ Harvey Stories from the City, Stories From the Sea That's a wonderful rough pop album, full of great PJ Harvey vocals and for the first time I can really hear the Patti Smith influences in her work. A great album. Heaton, Anne O'Meara Live with Frank Marotta, Jr. This live album is strong, more diverse, and less Tori-clone-like than _Spoke From The Heart_, but damn, it's missing that great title song. I can't imagine why she left it off! Anyway, in a couple of places here she sounds more like Ani Difranco than Tori; it's a little more folkrocky, and little more lively. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Neile Graham ...... http://www.sff.net/people/neile ....... neile@sff.net Les Semaines: A Weekly Journal . http://www.sff.net/people/neile/semaines The Ectophiles' Guide to Good Music ....... http://www.smoe.org/ectoguide ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 01 Mar 2001 22:19:03 -0800 From: Keith Fisher Subject: Re: Haris Alexiou and other Greek music news Yasou, Angelos!! Thank you so much for the update on Haris Alexiou and Eleftheria Arvanitaki. It was such a pleasure to see this post. This is my first post to this list, though I have been lurking in the shadows for a while. Your post prompted me to post. I was the one that went to the #ecto channel on DalNet a number of years ago (95?) and reported the death of Rod Bourland, an old time ecto channel guy from way back. It was one of my first experiences on IRC and I think Neile was there (Neile from Vancouver, if faded old memory is correct, right?). I felt like an absolute fool barging in totally unknown to report such depressing news, but someone close to me asked me to do it because Rod was well loved in the ecto world. I had known Rod for 25 years or so from back in my days in So. Cal. Angelos, Haris Alexiou is fantastic!! I first heard her in the Virgin Atlantic store in Athens when I was on a trip there in 97. That was where I fell in love with Greek laika, headphones on my ears, rocking back and forth and taking it all in with a big smile. Bought Ena Fili Tou Kozmou Live on the spot. One of the best albums in my collection. Track 3, Mouziko Thema is the one of the best. Actually they're all good. Came home to the US and ordered several other cd's by her. Did a little research and discovered Eleftheria Arvanitaki and ordered more CD's. Thanks again, Angelos. Angelos ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V7 #63 *************************
