I am just curious, what does everyone think about Napster and this burgeoning world of limitless free music? Will it be good for music? Bad? Personally, I think it could be a good thing. I think that Napster and websites that allow users to swap mp3's could mean that eventually, as more and more people get online, the only way to make a living as a musician will be to have a loyal fanbase. For example, take Happy Rhodes. I would assume that most people who make an effort to listen to something nonmainstream like Happy would be people who are very interested in music and who take music seriously. It is my opinion that such a person desires to own the actual release the artist makes available, the packaging, the concrete legitimate record that artist of whom they are a fan and are inspired by offers them. I don't believe that someone who is into Happy Rhodes, 10,000 Maniacs, Mazzy Star, Arson Garden, anything that appeals to the devoted music fan, would be content with just a copied CD-R. On the other hand, a twelve-year-old who's friends talk about Britney Spears at school and wants to fit in would most likely be more than eager to download Britney's latest chart-topper for free rather than get their parent's to buy the album. Could this eventually be the effect of Napster? Personally I have never used online music to burn a CD rather than buy it. I have a CD Burner myself and the only time I use it is when something is only available online or when I am making a "greatest hits" CD for my car or something like that. This is mainly because I just want the actual CD. Is anyone else like this? Aieeee!!!!! Oh boy, did we EVER. It was quite nasty and went on and on and on and on .... Basically, here it is in a nutshell: - -- Several people here think it's a good thing. - -- Several people here think it's a bad thing. - -- Some other people here (like me) just don't care. They don't use it and don't care to join in the debate about it. - -- No members of either of the first two groups will ever change their minds, no matter what anyone else says. Hope that answers your question. Last week I practically lived in New York. Two of the visits involved seeing a great show at Fez, which I haven't had time to report on until now. The first was Mila Drumke's annual Valentine's Day evening of jazz standards, on Wednesday. While the highlight of the evening may well have been seeing John Henshon in a tux , the music was pretty damned good, too. This year's special guests included Sean Altman (formerly of Rockapella, the guy who wrote the "Where In The World Is Carmen Sandiego" theme song!) and Trina Hamlin, among many others. Regular Mila Drumke Bandmates in attendance were Marc Sacco on drums and Lyris Hung (looking quite fetching in a nice black dress) on violin. I don't recall the exact set list, but there were quite a few tunes that ended up on _Hip To Hip_, as well as a killer rendition of "That Old Black Magic". Sean Altman did a duet with Mila, and I couldn't believe how beautiful his voice was - he's got a soaring tenor that meshed with Mila's voice perfectly. Trina Hamlin provided scorching harmonica on the last song of the set, a soulful number whose title escapes me, then she came back and did a gorgeous harmonica solo on the "Moon River" encore. I was there with a couple of non-ecto friends, and just those two bits alone turned one of them into a groveling Trina Hamlin fan. :) It was quite amusing to watch. (Afterwards we talked with Trina for a while. She's very cool. She says hi to Ofer. :) Anyway, Mila not only has the perfect voice for that kind of music, but she really looked the part too, decked out in a simple brown sheath and a retro hairstyle. She, and everyone else up there on stage was clearly having a wonderful time. It was a great night, well worth the getting home at 2am and the price I had to pay for it the next day at work. :/ Saturday night it was back to Fez, to see Meghan Toohey, Gail Ann Dorsey (yes, THAT one) and Emm Gryner. After being forced to stand in line outside in the single-digit wind chills for half an hour, then finally getting into the lounge only to find the air conditioning blasting ("it'll seem warmer when more people get in here" my ASS), I was ready for a damned good show. Fortunately, everyone delivered. I hadn't seen Meghan Toohey before, only heard bits and pieces about her, and I must've missed something along the way because I had no idea she was going to rock out. She had a band and her set was some great indie-pop music. She is a really good guitar player. Her solos on Prince's "Kiss" (the encore) in particular were noteworthy. Next came bass player to the stars Gail Ann Dorsey, doing only her second solo set in ten years. You may not know the name, but I can almost guarantee all of you have seen or heard her play with *somebody*: the list off the top of my head includes Jane Siberry, David Bowie, Tears For Fears, L7, and (most recently) Dar Williams. She is one hell of a bass player, and anyone who owns a copy of Jane Siberry's _Child_ knows she's one hell of a singer too (that's her singing "O Holy Night", oh my GOD). She was clearly very nervous, and I was sitting in the seat closest to the stage so I could hear everything she was muttering to herself (my favorite: "All this tuning. I'm turning into a damned folk artist." ;). The verdict: not much of a songwriter, an okay guitar player, still a kickass bassist and incredible singer. She had everyone in the place rooting for her the entire time, too. She mentioned she is about to go into the studio to start on her third solo album (the other two came out in the 80's and are long out of print), and judging by the new songs she did as compared to the old ones, it might be worth picking up. (One song was co-written with Roland Orzabal, and it was particularly cool.) You know there are going to be some great musicians on it, since she knows simply everybody, having played with them all. I'm going to keep my eye out for it, and if she does any more gigs I'll definitely check her out. Finally it was Emm's turn. At this point I should mention that the crowd was very surreal: it's like everyone from the headline-girl mailing list had road-tripped to NYC to see her, and every last one of them brought a video camera, minidisc recorder, or flash camera. The artists were clearly okay with recording. :) While waiting for things to start we heard several people comparing drive lengths ("it only took you 9 hours?!"). But they were very attentive throughout, and shouted almost just as loud for Meghan Toohey and Gail Ann Dorsey as they did for Emm. Anyhoo, I'd never seen Emm perform live either. I have to say I have been left rather bewildered by all the buzz she's been getting... _Public_ did less than nothing for me, and I don't think I was motivated to listen to her second disc more than once. But now that I've seen her play, I think I can see where people are coming from, though I'm not about to jump on the groupie bus just yet. IMHO Sarah Slean has more of a spark, though Emm does get extra bonus points for playing bass (in addition to piano and guitar)! (Does she always look like Bjork? She had a very Bjork eye makeup thing going, and was wearing a bright blue and pink dress that could have fallen out of a video for one of the songs from _Homogenic_. :) All in all it was a great night -- three good bands for $8. Can't ask for much more than that. :) Next up: Susan McKeown in Brooklyn on Friday. And Trina Hamlin is going to be doing a set at the Living Room on Saturday (in between Pamela Means and Sam Shaber). I hope to catch that on my way home from the Xena Convention. +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | | *** TRAJECTORY, the Veda Hille mailing list: *** | | *** http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html *** | +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 19 Feb 2001 20:35:32 -0800 From: Brian Errickson Subject: Re: the whole napster thing (old topic, looking for new opinions) I make Cdr.'s of whole albums but 99% of the time get the real cd anyways. I have that album and when I started on that booklet I felt so betrayed almost by the pomposity. I am an artist, I have things to say and show (also a visual artist) but I became a singer to express my writing, voice and poetry thru the medium of music. My soul is already expressed in my voice and songs and so I don't feel the need to tell fans my favorite color or the way my head hurt in Europe. Maybe I am just jealous of others having the money to make a 40 page booklet about themselves when I have to scrape to print a 3 page folder myself. [2] movies, books and games, in addition to music, are rapidly becoming available. it seems to me that the mas proliferation of free, copyrighted material is both inevitable and detrimnetal towards anyartists who hope to make money by being an artist. - -- People criticizing the news media for calling Florida for Gore on election night don't realize that the exit polls the media used were more accurate than the subsequent vote tally. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 20 Feb 2001 00:36:40 -0600 (CST) From: kerrywhite@webtv.net (kerry white) Subject: Re: a Tim Powers book request Hi, Thanks to Libby and a note about http://www.bibliofind.com I found another T Powers HB: "On Stranger Tides" in a used Book Club form for...get this!... $4.95 + postage.
