Ani's not the only >one >out there who does this Personally I can't think of a single expendable song on "To The Teeth"...or on "Little Plastic Castle" either (but those are my two favorite Ani albums, by far.) In general, I probably find Ani's work uniformly pleasing because there isn't a LOT of musical variation from song to song (i.e., she doesn't take a lot of musical risks.) When each song is just a different series of four chords, there's less room for creating something that will completely turn off the listener. For me, anyway, the value of her music usually lies more in the lyrical content. And it seems to me that while you may like one melody or chord progression more than another, if you like an artist's lyrical style, that will vary less from song to song. Is this making sense? (It's late.) It makes me very sad that everyone has such disparaging things to say about Ani's recent work; while her voice appears to have suffered some wear-and-tear, I honestly think her stuff just keeps getting better and better. (In fact, I found a lot of her early vocal mannerisms to be rather abrasive and off-putting; I appreciate the Dilate-and-after era of Ani's vocal style much more than anything before it.) "To The Teeth" is one of my favorite albums of the past couple years -- I think it has the best lyrics I've heard in a long, long time... every time I hear the verse in "Cloud Blood" about how "every other song somebody's trying to write angel's into the world", it makes it THAT much more difficult to listen to pop radio. :) People tend to get pissed off when artists change (which is unfair, cause that's what naturally happens over time). I'm equally guilty of this *cough* hated To Venus and Back *cough* but in Ani's case, I guess there's an issue of genre-shifting as well. I'm a huge jazz fan, and her new stuff definitely has a jazz/funk groove... I guess that might not appeal to people who discovered her when she was more folky. Anyway, can I get some support for Ani's new stuff? I know not EVERYONE on this list wishes she would just revert to "Not a Pretty Girl"! --Chuck n.p. Yes, but he beat Bjork :( Then again, everyone beat Bjork, who looked stunning I thought. Also, Chuck sez "Anyway, can I get some support for Ani's new stuff? I know not EVERYONE on this list wishes she would just revert to "Not a Pretty Girl"!" Nope, I don't wish she'd revert to NAPG, I selfishly wish she'd revert to Ani Difranco/Not So Soft/Puddle Dive. I know I'm as bratty as those Tori fans who don't like the band (I do) but I miss Ani-and-guitar and even Ani-and-Andy. I haven't liked anything past NAPG/Dilate, really (if Living in Clip came after, I take that back, I like that a lot) but I buy everything anyway, hoping, hoping. I suppose I like some of the *songs* but not the *albums*. (And I agree with Meredith that Ani slaps everything she writes on disc with little editing or changing. Sometimes I wish she'd sat with certain songs just a bit longer - some of her lyrics are fine, but could have been better I think. Just me...) Will I see anyone from the list at the Boston Emm Gryner show on Tuesday or the Sarah Harmer show upcoming or any of the other nifty shows? I thought _To The Teeth_ was her best album since _NAPG_. To me, a lot of the elements she'd been messing around with in _Dilate_ and _Little Plastic Castle_ (which elements, IMHO weren't all that successful, such as the vocal processing and the horn section) came together and finally worked. I like the album quite a lot. I'll pick up the new double one too, for sure. I'm always interested to see what she's going to come up with next. WASHINGTON (AP) - On Monday's anniversary of the Supreme Court decision legalizing abortion, President Bush signed a memorandum reinstating the full abortion restrictions on U.S. overseas aid that his father and former President Reagan had instituted before him. ``It is my conviction that taxpayer funds should not be used to pay for abortions or advocate or actively promote abortion either here or abroad,'' Bush wrote in his executive memorandum to the U.S. Agency for International Development, which oversees family-planning aid to foreign countries. It was Bush's first major policy action since becoming president on Saturday. It reverses the Clinton administration's position on unrestricted family-planning aid and bars U.S. money to international groups that use their own money to support abortion - either through performing the surgery, counseling on abortion as a family-planning option or lobbying foreign governments on abortion policy. On his first workday in the White House, Bush also gave a written statement to marchers on the 28th anniversary of the Supreme Court's Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion. ``The promises of our Declaration of Independence are not just for the strong, the independent or the healthy. They are for everyone, including unborn children,'' his statement said. ``We share a great goal, to work toward a day when every child is welcomed in life and protected in law ... to build a culture of life, affirming that every person at every stage and season of life, is created equal in God's image.'' Abortion-rights supporter Kate Michelman saw it as Bush's latest act of war on women's reproductive rights, following on his nomination of staunch abortion opponents to key Cabinet posts - former Sen. John Ashcroft for attorney general and former Wisconsin Gov. Tommy Thompson as secretary of health and human services. ... ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 22 Jan 2001 22:54:21 -0600 From: WretchAwry Subject: Our unfairly appointed "president" gets busy...(Part 2) WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Bush administration said Monday it would move quickly to open an Alaskan wildlife refuge to oil and gas drilling, pointing to California's electricity crisis as evidence the nation desperately needs more fuel. I have to second woj's mention of Bill Nelson. And I must add that (imho) the quality generally keeps up with the quanity. He has a five or six cd set of all new material due soon. A great artist but not ectophilian. Of interest to ectophiles, the Artist Shop newsletter indicates that Beverly Martyn(!) has a cd (No Frills) out, While she is still using the name Martyn; her marriage to John Martyn fell apart back around 1980. Still I think that this is a new release as i'm totally unaware of any prior solo outings. If this is even half as good as the two albums she released with her then husband, it should be terrific. Also, a month or two ago the Artist Shop newsletter indicated that there was a release of "new" Nick Drake material. All of it early, some of it covers. I've heard a couple of Drake songs on the radio that I didn't recognize and, needless to say, they were excellant.
