Anna knows about the glenn article in the boston phoenix before i do. Anyways, i was quite surprised to open up the phoenix this weekend and see a whole page with picture devoted to glenn. congratulations. Now about miss hatfield... i think i'll belatedly list some of my favorite stuff from last year now favorite albums-I didn't buy that many albums this year, but here goes : Kirsty MacColl - Tropical Brainstorm : 3 listens and i was madly in love with it. Well written songs, fun production, and those always beautiful vocals. Wild Strawberries - Twist : The song "Wish" alone could put this on the list. That and the cello parts in "Love Song 3000". Overall, another good pop-electronic-lounge effort from the Harrisons (although the DJ scratching sounds really anemic). And i still can't understand what Roberta is singing most of the time (not that the lyrics make any sense). Sarah Harmer - You Were Here : This was my favorite album for pretty much the entire year. SO different from her stuff on Weeping Tile's _Coldplay_. Well deserving of all the accolades she's received. Fantastic songwriting and wonderful production, and it defies pigeonholing. She's back in Boston on the 8th of february at Lili's in Somerville. Tara MacLean - Passenger : For all the pop gloss and the cringe-inducing native american flute on Higher, this is a pretty solid album. It'll probably sound dated in a few years, but for now, the production isn't too offensive. "Jericho" and "If I Fall" are the gems for me. Malcolm Burns does a nice job as co-producer, but some more organic sounds would balance it out better. hmm...i think that's my list. wow. Holly Cole's latest hasn't really done much for me (and i was looking forward to seeing where she went after her progression to Dark Dear Heart); the Beautiful South's new one is mediocre; Leslie Feist's album has some stand out spots (especially the string arrangements) but overall is uneven; Emmylou Harris' latest hasn't caught me like Wrecking Ball (then again, Malcolm Burn isn't quite the genius Daniel Lanois is); and Mila Drumke, who I am missing today at the house of Muzak, had Hip to Hip, which is decent, but not overwhelming. Cool Personal Note of the year : I've been interning at Fort Apache Recording Studios in Cambridge and thusly assisting on sessions for Tanya Donelly and Juliana Hatfield (did you know that juliana's dad went to Amherst and that Juliana went to Berklee? hi glenn :) ) other notes : Emm Gryner is coming back to boston twice. This Tuesday she's at Emily's (wherever that is) with Meghan Toohey, and on February 24th she's at TT the Bears. Fisher is at the Paradise on Valentine's Day. I didn't know that caroline lavelle has an official website at www.carolinelavelle.com It doesn't look like it's been updated in a while, but the last news from a couple years ago was that she had 2 albums coming up. Anyone know what happened to them? www.hollymcnarland.com is soon to be her official site, and ms mcnarland has a new album coming this spring, which makes ME very excited. The Buffy the Vampire Slayer soundtrack isn't that bad. My favorite Shivaree track is You Daring Lousy Guy. Subtitles from a Kungfu movie put to a strange, slinky pop tune. I saw them open for the Beautiful South last fall and was unimpressed (partly because the sound was terrible, partly because they just didn't seem to be playing together). I had hoped for better after reading the review in billboard last winter. that's it for now. Heidi quoted: >Prolific is the most fitting way to describe folkie Ani DiFranco who, fresh >off a tour of the United States last fall, and soon to be playing dates >around the world, will be releasing a new album on April 10 on her own >Righteous Babe Records. While we've been talking about artists that are better in live performance and vice-versa, how about artists who record simply *everything* they write, regardless of whether or not it's any good? Ani's not the only one out there who does this (Robyn Hitchcock also comes to mind), but she certainly seems to be the most prolific of late. Fortunately for her, most of her output has merit, but one wonders whether she may be better served by going a few more months between releases, and culling out some of the songs that might not be as good. But maybe that's just me. P.S. I tuned in to the Golden Globes late - why is Bob Dylan there?! +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | | *** TRAJECTORY, the Veda Hille mailing list: *** | | *** http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html *** | +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 Jan 2001 23:41:40 -0500 From: Tom Masapollo Subject: Lisa Gerrard on Golden Globe Awards Just wanted to mention that I saw Lisa Gerrard (Dead Can Dance) and Hans Zimmer (who has done numerous soundtracks) win an award tonight for the movie score of "Gladiator" That was a nice surprise seeing Lisa in the spotlight. later, tom Tom Masapollo Haddon Heights, NJ 1-800-732-6868 x230 ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 22 Jan 2001 00:16:59 -0500 From: recount chocula Subject: Re: more ani. when we last left our heroes, meredith (meth@smoe.org) exclaimed: >While we've been talking about artists that are better in live performance >and vice-versa, how about artists who record simply *everything* they >write, regardless of whether or not it's any good? two words: bill nelson. >(Robyn Hitchcock also comes to mind) actually, i'd say that a lot of robyn's songs never see the light of the recording studio -- or, at least, if recorded, never make it out. he does write many songs and performs lots of them live, but there are several live rarities tapes which are testiment to his relative stinginess in letting songs out into the world. woj ------------------------------ End of ecto-digest V7 #23 *************************
