They really weren't real bad, but the first time I saw them, I went into the show expecting something steller. They came across so plain jane, and just counldn't pull off their music live, which is a way of saying their studio LP's were just that fricking great. Those who heard the pre-Capital era material know what I mean. On the other side of the fence: Grey Eye Glances is a band that must be seen live to truely appreciate. No fancy lights, no trickery, just plain good tight harmony music with a special "feel" they just can't seem to capture properly on their studio CD's.... Warren Zevon is another performer whose inebriated stage antics could be a blessing or a curse. We were once treated to the Nigel-esque spectacle of Warren, higher than Mir, trying to climb down from atop his piano, and frantically signalling the stage crew for assistance. Two guys came rushing out to help and he fell on them both, creating a rather humorous, if unsightly, scrimmage at the base of the drum riser. Ah, the grace, the splendour of rock! Hmm, I guess either you did see a bad gig or were expecting something out of this world. Drugs will do that to you. :) Or perhaps MY drugs were better, because I'd seen them a couple of times in the 70's and it was always awe inspiring. To me and my girlfriend at the time, THE definition of studio-only band will always be The Moody Blues. Perhaps it was the less than stellar venue (the Hartford Civic Center), perhaps the time period (I think it was the first tour with Patrick Moraz), but the live performance just seemed lifeless. >> Grey Eye Glances is a band that must be seen live to truely appreciate.
