You know--. They start out slow and end in frenzy. And they must be at least 20 min long. Loreena McKennitt also makes excellent moving music. - --Jerene ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 12 Jan 2001 09:42:20 -0000 From: "Adam K." Subject: Classic instrumental openings that define songs Thanks to Bill for flying the flag for old Yes (or "Classic Yes", as it is sometimes known), and a big tip of the hat to Heart of the Sunrise. The progrock era is rife with nice little opening instrumentals -- even EL&P spring to mind, with Emerson's keyboards spiraling in for the start of Karn Evil 9. The opening of Pink Floyd's album Wish You Were Here sets the tone for the entire thing, while the lovely guitar bit that opens the title song is one of those that has everyone who knows it going "Aaaahhhh!". My vote for the underrated opening goes to Genesis' "Watcher of the Skies", with Tony Banks thunderous mellotron/organ opening which really takes you somewhere else. Listen to it on the 1974 "Genesis Live" album, and hear the crowd roar with joy the moment it roars into life. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 12 Jan 2001 08:25:29 +0000 From: runly@hvi.net Subject: Make Out and More To seduce anyone, play Sam Rosenthal's "Terrace of Memories." Had a dream, where I was talking to someone who was a casual fan of Loreena. I told this fan how I saw Loreena on her last tour, and how I was so glad I did, how I almost bagged it, difficulty getting others interested, yada yada, and I was so glad I finally made it because of the ensuing accident involving her fiance and how it is not known whether she'll do more albums or tour anymore. It was fairly vivid for such picayune dream detail. I do not normally remember this much. The creepy part is the next day I read on ecto about Kirsty MacColl. Later I read Meth's post about seeing artists when you get the chance, because "you never know". That is exactly the point I remember from this dream. (And no Meth, you weren't the "casual fan" of the dream!) At the time I was going to post something, but I decided not to, now that we're talking Loreena, I think it's apropos. I was also going to urge ectophiles to stay out of the water, but that would be silly... I hope. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 12 Jan 2001 09:50:10 -0500 From: Joseph Zitt Subject: Re: Ecto Deam/Happy Dreams On Thu, Jan 11, 2001 at 11:11:46PM -0600, tenthvictim@mindspring.com wrote: > The last thing I remember about the dream was stopping by the table at which > Happy sat, feeling like I had to say something to Happy. Listen to it on the 1974 "Genesis Live" album, and hear the crowd roar >with joy the moment it roars into life. I have a video of Genesis in 1974, performing a concert in Oxford (which I actually attended). Watcher was their opening number for a couple of years, and yes, the crowd went wild at the opening bars, (but also because the band had just taken the stage). Watcher would finish and then you would hear an even greater roar meld into the final blam of the song and then increase in volume as the trons died out. Apropos of really nothing at all, one of the most interesting aspects of those 70s Genesis shows was the propensity for hard core fans to show up bearing 6' stalks of Giant Hogweed (Heracleum Mantigazziani (spell?)) in tribute to the song/band. The inspiration for the song was a news story in the UK that had broken about the plant. It had been discovered that exposure to the plant's prickly little hairs could cause nasty disfiguring skin rashes that stayed with the victim for life! This was a very prevalent marshland plant, (and yes, it WAS imported from the Russian steppes by a "Victorian explorer"), and so nearly everybody in the UK with an IQ greater than minus three was aware of the potential harm. Yet at every Gen concert, ( especially Friars, Aylesbury, one of the band's richest and most loyal fan turnout spots) one would see these apparent victims of illiteracy, gaily waving their Hogweed at the front of the stage. We called the the Amateur Lunatic's Society, for want of a better term. Gabble Ratchet generally steered clear of them onstage and off, for obvious reasons. The fact that the song made specific, if rather oblique, references to the plants' properties made the situation even more mystifying. But it made it really easy to spot a stupid Genesis fan in a crowd ;) Phil ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 12 Jan 2001 22:22:13 -0500 From: Michael Curry Subject: Fwd: Kristy Thirsk Show!
